Laauoleola Cave (A’opo Cave) not to be confused with the smaller and less interesting Pe’ape’a Cave
This is a real cave, very wide and deep with many Pe’ape’as flying.
I recommend taking the guide as well, it's 20 talents really well spent. Langi didn’t just accompany me, he explained how plants are used both for eating and as medicine. A lovely person with whom I got lost in chatter and stories.
You go a lot ‘with the light of small torches, if you do not have a ask it on arrival, the mobile is not enough!
I recommend closed shoes and spray repellent.

An experience for the adventurous and those unafraid of pitch black caves. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a good torch or headlamp. You can get a guide or go by yourself. If you have no light the family who owns the property will provide you with one for no extra charge, but not great quality. If you have young children hold their hand in the cave as there are some holes with no guard rails. White rumped swiftlets inhabit the cave and use echolocation to navigate their way through the darkness. So you will hear clicks as a black shape whizzes past you. Look up and you may spot some nesting. I have never seen anything like it and to be able to explore with no-one watching your every move was quite the novelty.

Not to be missed. This is an incredible experience. Photos and black text on a screen will never do it justice. Take a torch, sturdy shoes and be prepared for a nature excursion like no other.

It was ok.
Of course there is a fee of 10 tala.
It’s short and quick
Don’t know if I would of cried if I didn’t see it

We had an amazing time visiting the caves, it was such a unique experience, and we loved the guided tour from Lagi, who kindly pointed out all the trees and plants we walked past on our way to the caves. There were cocoa, papaya, guava, banana, mahogany trees and many native Samoan trees which I’ve shamefully forgotten the names of. We even saw pineapples growing! We loved seeing the Swiflets that live in the cave, and spotting their tiny nests. There were no bats much to my relief. The caves are really cool, very dark and also quite unstable underfoot so take good footwear although we all went in our sandals and were fine. It’s the longest cave in Samoa but we only went a few hundred meters, which was far enough to see the holes down to the deeper parts of the complex-very cool!! Spending time with Lagi was the best part, she was so generous with her time and knowledge, and we felt very lucky that her family have been kind enough to share their land with tourists. The caves are named after her father in law who discovered them in 1954. We met him too and his daughter in law, who very kindly gave us some taro to eat because we had wanted to try some. Can’t recommend it enough, and thought it was very good value at 20 tala each. Thank you Lagi! Julia and Graham.

Well signposted on the road although Google maps was 500m off. Closed on Saturdays (7th day aventist) so go any other day. Previous two reviews accurate nice walk with lots of interesting plants and the cave is fun. Guide happily answered all our questions about samoa not just the cave and plants. Worthwhile 20 Tala each.

We were looking forward to a little hike through the beautiful forest on the way to the caves, and we were not disappointed! It was great to have a guide (Lagi) who spoke English and was so knowledgeable about the native flora and fauna. She guided us safely through 500m of the cave and showed us some interesting sights inside it. Definitely bring your own flashlight if you can and good walking shoes! We all really enjoyed this experience!

One of the best things we did in Samoa. The lovely Samoan family who own the land provided a tour for only 20 tala each. Our guide explained lots of the plants & fruit trees on the way down, providing a wealth of information on traditional Samoan cooking & practises. The ~15 minute walk to the caves is beautiful and the caves are fascinating. An absolute must in Samoa, we will be back to see Lagi and her family!

Definitley needs to be seen to understand the unusual rock formation from the Lava tube.Enjoyed the bush walk to the cave entrance . Loved seeing the Swifts ( birds ) flying in and out of the cave . Knowledgeable gude .

La’auoleola Cave has recently been upgraded by
Chris Barnes from New Zealand to New Zealand National Park standard. The track in is fully benched and made to last and all reasonably fit families can do it. Good footwear recommended. The path is lovely in its own right through gardens of flowers, fruit plantations and birds.
The cave entrance is magical and leads to a deep, long cave. The cave is thronged with bird life swiftlets and little bats that swoop so close. Our guide took us about 500m into the cave to a hole that is impassable to average tourist but the cave continues for another 5 kilometres. There are three levels and it is not fully explored. Currently the 27th longest lava cave in the world.
This is a gem and must see for those exploring Savaii.

What was the futherest that any reviewer had gone in this lava tube (in time? eg 1 hour slow walk in and 30mins fast out etc)

Ok. We went about 500m in. There are many little fruit bats and swiftlets. Then a drop into a hole about 5m. There are three levels. The cave in total is 5 kilometres long and the 27th largest lava cave in the world. It is not fully explored.
