I am an experienced climber and have hiked in this type of terraine many times. However, this cave was extremely difficult to find, the GPS coordinates and grid reference found online are inaccurate. I almost died after falling looking for the cave and had was rescued by helicopter after falling and breaking my anklle. I am sharing this to try and avoid anyone else ending up in the same situation. Please be aware it is very dangerous!

Jessica, I am at a loss to understand why you posted this "review" of my former business which has just been drawn to my attention. I am sorry you were injured while out walking but this has absolutely nothing to do with me or the business I closed down some 18 months before your accident. You didn't use my services, seek my advice or contact me in any way. You sought information from other sources online and took your chances with a solo scramble to a location which one of my former clients had visited with no problems whatsoever. If you had employed me to help you visit the cave I would have been happy to do so. Although my business has been closed for some time it is nevertheless annoying that you have posted a negative review and I would request that you remove it. Kind regards, Mike Briggs

Our walk with Mike Briggs was breathtaking, the best walk of my life. He took us on a day hike to see beautiful high hills, grassy summits, deep valleys, white beaches and turquoise seas. We could not have found these ourselves as they weren’t marked on our maps. We sat on an deserted white sandy beach and ate our picnic lunch. Mike is very knowledgeable about the history of the island, and about its flora and fauna. We stopped to admire eagles, seals, wild flowers, geological history and ancient settlements. An extraordinary day I’ll never forget. Book him!

We had an expedition on a typically soft Harris day, way above Amhuinnsuidhe, and watched and listened to the plaintive golden plover, spotted mountain hare and stags way up on the ridges. Mike is super knowledgable and I as an amateur hill walker felt confident in his guidance. Memorable day and one our teenage son thoroughly learned from and enjoyed.

Mike took us on a stunningly beautiful walk, in search of scenery and wildlife. The scenery was everywhere and even when the mist descended and the rain swept across us it was atmospheric and breathtaking. We didn't catch up with any deer or eagles but we did bump into highland cattle, gannets, and cormorants.

Above all though Mike's knowledge of the history, culture and natural world of the island made this the best possible introduction. I couldn't recommend this more highly.

Mike Briggs took us, 2 60-somethings, over hill and dale for 3 days and we loved every minute of it. A fellow geographer he knows it all: geomorphology, geology, ecology, birding, history, local issues. Great walks (some hikes) in the soft rain and drives in the country side— all away from the tourist spots. We visited distilleries and weavers and Harris Tweed shops. We learned a lot. We laughed. We dodged caravans. Mike gave us everything we asked for and more. Pure delight!

We asked Mike is he could help out with organising a day of birdwatching and a half day hike for us and our daughters, 11 & 9: he exceeded our expectations.

Firstly the birding. Mike suggested that North Uist would offer more opportunity than Harris and so we took the ferry over with him early in the day. We then spent a lovely day on completely empty white beaches, the moorland behind and a nature reserve, stopping for lunch in a local cafe. Our birdwatching enabled us to see a variety of species for the first time including: Short Eared Owls, Hen Harriers, Plovers (common and ringed), Golden Eagles and many more. We explored the heath behind the beach and some nearby moreland, locating nests with clutches of Oyster Catcher and Meadow Pippit eggs. The nesting birds returned to their nests immediately after we hurriedly left the scene. Our daughters were enchanted by the experience which was so enriched by Mike's easy going manner and dry sense of humour. And an added bonus was Mike's knowledge of the Islands culture and traditions which brought so much of the history to life.

The second day, we hiked with him in southern Harris. We walked for a couple of hours climbing high into the hills to visit two round 'bee-hive' stone houses which, in summers of yore, housed some of the local women as they took their livestock up to pastures where they could graze. Amazing to realise that these houses, of the most rudimentary nature I have seen, were occupied until the late 19th century! We finished that morning taking our packed lunches down close to the sea, into the long abandoned ruins of a village: once 13 dwellings, the village was abandoned close on 200 years ago when the landowner of the day decided on a whim to clear his land. We sat on the tumble down walls of were maybe once happy homes, bathed in sunlight, and imagined what life must have been like in such times whilst eating our sandwiches. A lovely end to our time with Mike.

I can't express enough how enriching an experience it was for our family to share time with Mike. He has a combination of studiously acquired knowledge, acerbic wit, and an easy going manner. That combined with his mastery of the landscape he has chosen to inhabit for the last two decades made this a fabulous experience for us. If we return (and I hope we shall), Mike shall be the first call.

My husband and I booked a day with Mike to take us into the Harris Mountains during our trip there this summer. We didn’t have a lot of time on Harris and wanted to get the most out of it, so we chose Mike as our guide based on the great reviews. It ended up being one of the very best days of our trip, and the highlight of our time there for my husband. Mike is warm, knowledgeable, fun... He took us places with great vistas, places we saw eagles and dippers....Awesome! We would never have found these by ourselves. Even though we are mountaineers, I would not have attempted to wander in these mountains without him as our guide. Couldn’t say enough great things about Mike. If I could give 10 stars I would.

My partner and I booked a day of hiking with Mike and didn’t know what to expect. Mike took us on a most interesting walk off-track to some of the most beautiful lochs and high spots of north Harris. But that wasn’t all. Mike is a very warm, friendly and super knowledgeable guy! We were treated to a walk through the history, geology, flora and fauna of the area in a most engaging and personal way. Our hike felt bespoke and personal and was paced to suit our ability. We would never have managed to see the sights we saw without Mike’s guidance. Go on, treat yourself!! It was so worth it for us. Thank you Mike and we hope our paths cross again.

We had pre booked Mike to guide us on a walk during our stay on the Isle of Harris. The weather on the day turned out to be a miserable , very wet and windy day with very poor visibility at times. I am not usually keen to walk in these conditions, but knew it was this day or not at all.
Mike made the day !! His enthusiasm for the beautiful area was infectious. Coming from Australia , we had much to learn about Scottish history and Life on Harris. Mike was so informative.
I arrived wet and cold at the end of the day, but very very happy with the walk. We could not have managed to visit the places we ventured without Mike as our guide.
Absolutely recommend Mike’s hill walking guiding . Thank you Mike. 😁

We organised a hike with Mike Briggs as he was recommended by previous friends who came last year.My wife and I went with Mike for a 12 km hike on a very wet and windy day.The trip was fantastic and whilst we are experienced hikers,I believe we would not of been able to do this hike without a experienced guide like Mike due to the remoteness of the area.Mike gave us a lot of the history of the area which we found fascinating and informative. The outer Hebrides has a unique history and Mike provided a lot of interesting insights.
