The park is a winding, and pleasant 75 minute drive from Clovis/Fresno on rt 168.. Foothills gradually increase in height and ruggedness until they become mountains with evergreen growth. The rich green is contrasted by the hideous burn scarring left by the fires. Shaver Lake is a must and has large sand areas suitable for swimming and beach. The water level in April of '22 was quite low.

Sierra NF is a beautiful place for a drive or a hike. Being among the trees, river, and rocky areas is a great experience. Since it borders Yosemite NP, we drove there after visiting the park.

Go the Sierra National Forest if you want to escape from the dust and the din of cities like Los Angeles. It is quiet, shady and scenic. If you lie low and remain quiet, you'll hear the sounds of insects, small critters and birds. The rustle in the undergrowth may be a lizard or a field mouse. Don't scare because they are scared and fleeing from you. Marvel that some of these towering trees have been around for hundreds of years and will be around long after you are gone. Strange is it not that in the evolutionary process trees trade mobility for longevity.

This National Forrest is a must visit when you are in Clovis. Many picnic places and photo shots. At this time of the year, there is still snow around which provides the best photography opportunities.

This national forest borders Yosemite National Park on several sides, but the most dramatic is from the south, arriving from Oakhurst. Great views if you are he passengers, a bit stressful if you are driving, especially in rain.

Inside the large Sierra National Forest are many different places. We stopped at the Indian Flat Day Use area on the Highway 140 entrance into Yosemite for a few minutes to eat a picnic lunch. While pleasant enough, there is a ten dollar minimum fee to stop for any length of time.

Beautiful vistas marred by heartbreaking mis-management by the Forest Service. This is the heart of the Sierra and the greatest remaining (what remains of it) swath of the forest of the Western slope of the Sierra Nevada. Some developed campsites near reservoirs, open land camping, four-wheel driving, access to numerous wilderness areas, fishing abounds. Just too bad that the Forest Service is more interested in resource extraction than in protecting this vast and unique landscape. Just beware, this is not your average “Park,” lots of heavily armed back-woods folk, ATVs, jet skiers, etc... “play” in these woods. Access the wilderness areas if you’re looking for untrammeled quiet.

What can be said about our beautiful National forests that haven't already been said. We have some of the tallest and largest trees in the world. There are many beautiful lakes to visit and fish. Waterfalls, roaring rivers, wild animals. Just visit already.

I've lived in the Central Valley California the majority of my life.
The Best part is being able to access the beautiful scenery anytime!!! Anyone who comes here needs to take a trip into the Sierra's and truly appreciate how amazing it is here! So much natural beauty and history!!!
I absolutely recommend taking the time to drive through the Sierra National Park and Sequoia National Park's!!! It's a great day trip and not as hard to travel as people think... take the time!!!!

Sierra NF is huge, stretching from Yosemite NP in the north to Bakersfield in the south. Sierra NF includes Sierra NP and Kings Canyon NP within its geographic area. There are two routes to the NF, 168 east to Shaver and Huntington Lakes and 180 to Grant Grove area. Hwy. 180 connects to hwy.198 exiting the park in the Three Rivers area (Visalia). Otherwise you will enter and exit via the same route. Sierra NF HQ is on Tollhouse Road in Clovis between Fowler and Sunnyside.

How would Kings canyon compare to the canyon parks of Utah like Bryce, Zion Arches? Would it be one we should skip.?

As stated above they all have they pluses. The advantage here for Kings Canyon is that you can add Sequoia National Park and see the Beautiful Giant Sequoias. General Grant and the like, General Sherman, the drive through tree. Have fun!!

Yes. Go to Shaver Lake. The Hikers Companion Book is there with tons of great hikes by a local. Check with Shaver Sports and tell them Gracie said hi.
