The “museum” is a modest single room (with a tiny black light room too) off a gift shop. The displays are largely glass scraps scavenged from the beaches (is that why Glass Beach is pretty picked over?). Decent descriptions of the different colors of glass adorn the showcases. Other things are for sale in the “museum.” The room has at least three TV monitors going, with the owner holding forth on different topics simultaneously on a variety of topics. The owner is less than friendly, and makes a big point about the donation box with the suggested donation. Seems to be some misinformation in various forms as well. If you want to know what different colors of glass came from, this is your place. If not, skip it.

Fortunately the vast majority of visitors disagree with you. Very few give a poor review like you, with 234 giving a very good to excellent review, 57 average and only 30 below that. Most of the poor reviews come from people who missed the museum and only saw the gift shop.... I often wonder when I get one like yours, if you ever look to see what others have said......Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder....Sorry you didn't like what so many others love...

It was a little hard to find as it is one business inside a larger building with other enterprises and you have to go into the store then into the museum. They rely on donations so bring some cash with you. I really enjoyed the displays of all the different colors of glass and where they come from.

A total waste of time. Junk store & one-room “museum”. Maybe someone completely unaware of the Glass Beach history may glean some information from the videos & displays. There was an unpleasant odor. What bothered me the most was a notice taped to one of the video monitors informing visitors, actually advocating, that sea glass may be removed—“it’s not illegal”. Due to this beach being left unprotected, the former “Glass Beach” is basically non-existent. Having experienced it myself in 2014, there is no comparison. What made it great has been pillaged by people with the same attitude as this “museum” owner.

I am sorry you missed the actual museum. You obviously just saw the gift shop. The museum entrance is off the gift shop and the museum itself consists of 2 rooms and contains the world's largest permanent sea glass display with over 3,000 artifacts. Before posting such negative reviews, I would hope people like yourself would wonder why they had such a poor opinion when others have so much good to say. Could it be you might have missed something? I hope you return to see the museum itself.

My husband and I are fascinated with the Sea Glass at Glass Beach the gentleman that runs the museum was a wealth of information, we really enjoyed the history

I knew the museum would be small, but it also smelled funny inside. Some of the pieces were interesting, but overall, underwhelming. My kids were bored with it after the first few minutes.

Did you actually go into the main museum? Or were you just in the small gift shop? Are you a sea glass enthusiast? If not, and you did go into the museum, you probably do not know the significance of what you were seeing. However, all I hear all day long is how impressive the collection is, which most reviewers here on Tripadvisor agree with. I am sorry for the slight odor that is sometimes present. The museum is housed in an historic building constructed in 1926, the Union Lumber Company Store,, and the floorboards in the museum section are the original redwood plank floorboards. Sometimes they give off the slight musty smell of old wood. Very few people complain about it. If it was of general concern I would talk to the building owner about covering them, but only a few people seem bothered by it and their actual age is of interest to most. If you realize you missed the actual museum and only saw the small gift shop, I hope you return to be truly amazed.

The Captain displays glass he collected. He has old videos showing Glass Beach in its heyday. There's little upon which to marvel. The jewelry he has crafted as far over-priced. I wasn't impressed.

As others have said small shop but good examples of all the colors of the glass plus how rare each color is. Dont need a lot of time but we enjoyed looking at the displays (all 4 60+). Price is right- make a donation. small but nice gift shop. Tips on how to find sea glass off the beaten path can be had.

This is in a repurposed downtown building with many occupants. He has apparently reworked the shop so you enter through the museum, and exit via the gift shop. The museum has a very nice representation of the various colors of glass once found on the beach. The sizes of glass represented in the cases are larger than what you will likely find if searching today. The gift shop had a number of souvenirs made with sea glass, but we did not find anything we couldn’t live without. The proprietor is an interesting fellow, and we enjoyed our interaction with him.

Museum is closed, but a virtual tour is available online. It is housed in a cool old building in downtown Fort Bragg, that would be a fun place to revisit when Covid is under control. Coffee shop and other eateries inside the building are open.

I re-opened the museum in the first week of April. It is open every day from 10 - 5 unless I have an appointment. I currently expect to be closed April 25 after 2PM, April 26, May 5 after 3 PM,May 10 and May 11.

For anyone interested in sea glass, this is a must. It is an educational experience, with the story of beach glass and the process leading to its formation. One can view the multiple colors and shapes and appreciate the most unusual ones. Nowadays most glass in the beaches is white, brown or green, there were many more colors in the past. Also an appeal to leave the glass in the beach so that others will enjoy it in the future. (We saw a woman with a shovel and a bucket taking glass home.)
