The Boole Tree is the sixth or eighth largest, depending on the source, Redwood tree (Sequoia Gigantea) left. If you love these big trees this is a great 2 1/2 mile loop trail. It is a real trail, moderate in difficulty and has no water, so I would leave the under 10 set at home as well as anyone not sure on their feet.
This is the Converse Basin and it was logged in the late 1890s thru the early 1900s. The redwood does not decompose very quickly and so these 120 year old stumps are still viable. The are mind blowing in size and help to put the Boole Tree's 265 foot size and huge girth in perspective. The other thing about this trail is that it provides a rare view directly to the top of the tree since the tree is down the hill from part of the trail. It is an unusual and quite interesting.
Take some water and a couple of hours - enjoy a great groove of Sequoia trees and mourn the loss of so many others. This walk also provides some good views of Kings Canyon.
Take Hwy 180 to Kings Canyon National Park. Follow the signs (about 4 miles) to the visiter center and ask for their handout on the Boole Tree. it has directions and additional information. It is a small center but it has some great displays and information. You can then drive the few miles to the trail head which is down a serviceable dirt road.
