We went up to shoot t video for our You Tube channel Exploring Abandoned Mines. The drive up there is stunning. Interesting collection of restored 100 year old buildings and artifacts. The road from Keeler is steep and narrow. Four wheel drive recommended do no try and tow a trailer!

I was up there before the fire took over the town. I have to honestly say with out a doubt this was one of the coolest adventured I ever been too! Such a amazing place to visit. Tons of history up there. We even took the road to see the tram station but it's not for the faint hearted with almost sheer drop offs but we were glad we made the trip, well worth it. I can not believe some mining company from Canada want to put a open pit mine in the area. I say NO to big mining! This area needs to be saved so others can enjoy the adventure!
I was there years ago not Nov 2000 so you know

We were looking forward to our visit. We tried to confirm our reservation via the website but never heard back. So we risked the very scary drive to the mine only to learn we could not walk around because there was filming going on that day. It would have been so easy for the current owner to just place a sign at the beginning of the road to explain it was closed for a special event. Definitely recommend a 4WD to make the trip!! The road is quite narrow and rough in places so some folks will be very anxious in those sections. The views down to the Owens Valley are spectacular since you get up to 8000 feet elevation. So very disappointed we put our poor car and our nerves through that intimidating drive only to learn Cerro Gordo was closed for the day. We saw the Bodie Ghost Town the day before. That CA state park is outstanding!

Great place to visit to see the living history of an old silver mining town that paid for the building of Los Angeles. Visit the Hotel and learn about who died at the poker table; then go to the assay office to find out how the ore was assayed.

I was surprised by many reviews calling road to Cerro Gord very hard or worse.
yes it is steep but in good condition(compared to many other roads) for any vehicle with higher than Honda Civic clearance and being in good condition. The only challenge is driving back down using low gear with careful use of brakes. Drove this road many times. Of course driving up is severe test of car cooling system.
I considered Mike a friend visiting place regularly and admired his hard work restoring buildings and keeping it in good shape. He was always friendly showed his "museum" and other historical places in town.
The road from Cerro Gordo to Saline Valley salt tram switching station is a challenge but well worth driving because of incredible scenery, great views of Saline Valley and of course switching station itself and restored building nearby.
There are many other great ghostowns around Death Valley, too many to list here but Panamint City, Ballarat and Lookout Mountain are among my favorites

Lotsa maneuvering to make it up the 8-mile steep incline dirt road with hairpin turns and vertical drops. Yikes!
Good tales of the old mining days along with some mystery regarding a shooting in the card room (maybe ghosts, too!) AND romance to top it all off! Too good to be true for only $10??? Maybe.....
Jonathan gave us an interesting and detailed tour with many many many anecdotes and side stories. Overall, it was an unusual and worthwhile adventure but I'm very happy that I was not driving!

Like everyone else said, the road up the mine is quite a trek, we were glad that we were given a 4x4 rental. Robert showed us around and answered all our questions and more, the gentlemen himself is a treasure by his own right. We had such a good time learning about the place, left him a box of Yorkshire tea as soon as we found out he loves tea, he's much appreciative of it. Kids (11+9) were most intrigued about the ghosts stories and the life those miners lived, especially the murder and the bullet hole on the wall. It's been one of my husband's favourite places throughout our 4 weeks holiday in CA.

I finally got up to Cerro Gordo last Saturday and took a tour of the town.
I was met by the resident caretaker who unlocked the buildings and led me on the tour.
I had purchased my tour on line at the mine website, but you can also pay in cash once up there.
The drive up is not all that bad (I was in a pickup) just very washboarded with loose gravel rocks. A car with a couple from Spain drove up in a rental sedan and joined us for the tour.
The tour consists of several buildings including the assay office and the old hotel. You can also just wander the town and take pictures of all the old buildings.
The caretaker/tourguide named Robert was a very interesting character, with plenty of stories and historical anecdotes.
The views of the Owens Valley and the Sierra range beyond is worth the price of admission by itself.
Definitely worth the effort and time to visit this historic place.

Because of my advancing age I no longer enjoy shelf roads. Is there some way I can hire someone with a Jeep - like an owner. Money is not a serious concern.

Does anyone know if you can hire a jeep with a driver anywhere to take you up here? I would love to visit but driving on narrow dirt roads with shear drops terrify me. Thanks

Has anyone been over Highway 178/Badwater Road between Tecopa/Shoshone recently. If so could you please share the road conditions, paved, pot holes. Thanks, Pablo

There 2 weeks ago, The road is open and fine.
Be sure to try the Crowbar Cafe in Shoshone.
