Congrats LA public transit for doing an excellent job getting people around with efficiency and cost effectiveness. I was here for 5 days and went everywhere from Santa Monica base-camp easily. I spent less than 20 dollars total and I went everywhere. Nicely integrated with Google Maps. Really nice that it is integrated fare with big blue bus. I really enjoyed my stay LA and one of the big reasons was the transit system.

There are plenty of things to do if you want entertainment, although the prices are really high, and travel is expensive due to the prevalence of cars for trips around the city.

Stayed in hawthorne NY hawthorne Lennox station. Rode the 212 bus to Venice blvd, 33 to downtown. Bought a tap card, bus was only 1.75. Great way to see the city. Thanks LA

There is fare capping for day and week rides (no more than 18 USD) and the metro was extremely good at covering large distances - we ride daily around 40-100km on metro alone. And no matter which day you rode - there were always free places to sit. Only in Los Angelos center it goes underground - in most parts it is on same level as cars and waits at road crossings. Based by maps, it will take around 50% longer time rather than driving car.
During daytime metro was mostly nice, but as it gets darker, also public in metro gets weirder and after sun went down every ride in metro was some kind of circus - drug users, marihuana smokers making strange performances and movements and it can get scary. We were lucky and nobody paid attention to us, but we did not feel safe - even drivers at night started to act strange. So, we saved more than 500 USD on transportation compared to renting car or driving uber, but not sure I would recommend others to use metro.

Safe, clean, cheap, & easy. Trips were around $2 compared to over $40 for Uber depending on time of travel -if you could get one! City law set a $20 minimum per ride fare + $4 airport tax for all taxis originating at LAX. Uber is a little lower. So, it pays for them to stay within that area. If you're in an airport hotel and want to go downtown, you'll have a hard time finding a ride unless you bump up your offer. Old maps show the Santa Monica as a blue line -it's now orange. The stops weren't updated on the Expo/Crenshaw to Westchester/Veterans train's screen on Friday, but I knew the route by then and didn't worry. I stayed 1.6 miles from the Westchester/Veterans station and walked to/from there every day, rode to 7th St. Station, and walked to the JW Marriott. Got pretty soaked once, but good exercise and safe. The Metro felt safe everywhere at all times except the Friday early evening ride. I got on at Wilshire/Western, transferred at 7th St to the Orange/Santa Monica, then transferred again at Expo/Crenshaw. The Wilshire/Western stop had some kids running between trains, which didn't look safe and someone offered to sell me something, which I didn't hear, then he offered to sell me a joint, which I turned down. There were 2 dogs loose in the 7th St. station when I got there. They were extremely scared. A few homeless and clearly mentally ill people were on the train with me toward SM, but they didn't bother me. Other days/trips were totally uneventful.

The Los Angeles Metro Rail is an urban rail transit system serving Los Angeles County, California. It apparently consists of six lines and serves 101 stations.

The Universal City Metro subway station is a short walk away from Universal Studios Hollywood and the Hilton and Sheraton hotels. It is down a steep hill (which we called “that bloody hill”) and you have to remember it’s there waiting for you at the end of the day.

The subway station is accessed using a high pedestrian bridge over the Lankershim Blvd / Universal Hollywood Drive intersection (there are no Ped Xings). On our first visit the escalators were out of order, so we had to use the stairs and stinky elevator.

The ticket machines use a simple system where you press lettered keys to make your selections, however the options on screen weren’t always logical. You start by purchasing a Tap card for $2 (we forgot we had the app and therefore didn’t need it) and then load the card up with funds for your journeys. You ‘tap’ in at the gates and the money is deducted from your account. The ticket machine accepted cash or card. We initially paid with a large bill, so ended up with some neat dollar coins as our change.

We made four journeys on separate days:

- Universal City to Hollywood/Highland on the B Line (red) when we visited Hollywood Blvd on July 30 2023. There and back cost only $1.75 per person each way and took less than 10 minutes. We only had a short wait for the trains each time. The carriages felt tired and the underground stations were warm.

- Universal City to Santa Monica (via a change from the B Line to E Line at 7th Street station) on August 2 2023.

At 7th Street we changed from the B Line (red) to the E Line (yellow). We were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff shouting “this track for Santa Monica”, which gave us confidence we were in the right place. We discovered later on our return, that our train had pulled into the same platform, so wondered if there had been a change in the morning as you don’t usually get trains travelling in both directions from the same platform.

The journey from 7th Street to Santa Monica took around 45 minutes. Most of route was at street level on the surface, giving us a good glimpse at residents’ homes and businesses as we headed west towards the coast. These train carriages were bright, clean and felt fresh. The entrance to the Santa Monica Pier was an easy 5 minute walk from the station.

Later that night, back at 7th, the friendly staff were on the platform again, giving everyone a cheery ‘hello’.

This positive experience was a total contrast with our next stint on the B Line (red) from 7th Street back to Universal City. We boarded a subway at 8.30 p.m. after all that fun and 10 miles of walking at the Santa Monica Beach and of course it was busy at this late hour. Our dirty carriage was packed full and the only empty seats were next to an emancipated guy who was sat puffing on a giant joint of cannabis. Meanwhile another guy was asking people for a spare dollar. Most people kept their eyes down and enjoyed the music. Yes, there was music blasting, for two separate groups had music blaring from speakers (in completion with each other?). A third guy stepped into the carriage at one station, eating a box of doughnuts. He then slung the packet out the door, onto the platform, before scouring the carriage. As he passed by he was scratching his ass and sniffing his fingers!

This all meant the 20 minute journey felt like an eternity! We hadn’t intended on being on the subway so late, but Santa Monica was enjoyable and we hadn’t wanted to leave.

We arrived at Universal City station at 8.55 p.m. hoping the smell of the cannabis hadn’t lingered on our clothes. We chuckled to ourselves, as when we left Santa Monica we’d had a cheeky bag of fries and a large Coca-Cola from McDonalds on the train - in contravention of the ‘no eating or drinking on the trains’ rule, quite tame compared to the drug-taking guy!

All in all, the LA Metro subway was very cheap (thanks to fare capping at $5 a day) and convenient, but you have to be robust and assertive when mingling with all walks of life on the system.

We had heard some horror stories; we found the metro both Underground and Buses to be safe and on time, yes keep your wits about you but no worst than London’s underground. With the Tap card limits a great cost-effective way of getting around LA

After travelling on many metro systems in Europe and the US, this is definitely the worst one. It’s really very unpleasant and there is no way I would have taken my family on this a second time. There were no other tourists there and the it was obvious that any locals that could afford to travel some other way did that. It was genuinely frightening and I wouldn’t recommend it.

The reviews are catastrophic but in reality lots of people take the subway every day in LA and they don't do so bad. Of course, you have to have eyes in your back, there are people on drugs/withdrawal etc. so vigilance is required but I think that this is the case for all the metros in the world (Paris is not either phew, need we remind you?). The metro is now very developed, the weekly pass only costs $18 and you can also take all the buses (I recommend taking the bus to go to the beach, the metro is really scary and it's long 45 minutes with weird people compared to 1h10 for the bus). I'm a single woman and I survived the LA subway so it's possible! (I systematically placed myself next to other women).

While there are lots of negative reviews below, really, as with any mass transit system, it varies greatly by line and neighborhood. The LADOT commuter buses are great and very underappreciated. If you give it a chance, most lines are not so bad. Given the price of gas in Los Angeles, most Metro lines provide good value versus driving.
