Our family went to Olympic Valley for a wedding over Memorial Day. We brought winter coats as the weather is slightly unpredictable. The afternoon of the wedding temperatures were in the forties. We were fortunate and had brought warm outerwear.
The area is breathtaking with mountain and lake views everywhere. Be sure to get close to Lake Tahoe. The water is so blue and serene. We were able to have access to a beach and a pier.

One hour up (even for the least in shape of us), then an hour lolling by a stunning lake, then a swim in the lake (much warmer than Lake Tahoe), then an easier amble down. Will do again next time we're in the neighbourhood!

One of our favorite hikes in the Tahoe area. It is short, mayb e 4 miles round trip and you can visit all 5 lakes. If it's warm, the swim at the top mis worthwhile. Or just picnic on a rock at the lake. It's difficult to find all 5 lakes, but if you have a GPS, you can easily find the trail. Uphill is a moderate climb and it can be hot since there are few trees for most of the way. Do early in the AM or on a cool day.

Beautiful trail passing lakes and ending at Squaw Valley areal tram if you decide to end up in Squaw Valley. The tram down is free. You can also return to trail head. Difficult at beginning but very scenic.

Be prepared for a climb for the first 30 min (4 mph pace). Come with shoes that have good treads. The trail has some loose rocks and loose soil. Trekking poles are beneficial for your descent. The trail is a switchback through the trees, tall bushes, and rocks. There are wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. Some of the trail passes through private property before meeting back up with US forest service land. One of the lakes is a bit off trail and requires some exploring. The other lakes are right along the trail and very easy to find. When you see the sign that alerts you to no camping or stock within 600 feet of the lake, you will be at the first lake within 5 minutes. It will be to the left side of the trail. There is a small fork in the trail leading to the left. The end of the trail has the largest lake.

The Five Lakes Hike is a work out going up but there are five different and beautiful lakes once you get there. The first part up is rough with sun exposed switchbacks. The second uphill part once you reach the ski lift pylons is prettier with canyon and cool rock views....but still uphill and sun exposed. You eventually reach the forest and level ground which is nice! Stay on the main trail until you see the left trail marked for Five Lakes which takes you to the largest of the five lakes. Beautiful! Explore to the left around the lake to find places to dip into the lake and the stream cross over to lake #2. Head around to the right through the reeds and wildflowers to lakes 3 and 4 ( 3 is hard to find over some boulders- 4 which is the smallest is very cool). The last lake which is back towards the main trail had many dragonflies, butterflies and flowers. Beautiful area, many places to sit and look at the lakes. Go early in the morning and take plenty of water.

We went mid-July about 9am. It was a very toasty climb for a while, little shade. But we we were then rewarded with beautiful views and serene forest, lakes and creeks.

This was a nice hike up switchbacks and ending with 5 lakes. The trail is not shaded for much of the hike, so it is recommended that you go early in the summer. It was also much more crowded on the way down. The first 1/4 mile is the steepest climb but then it is more level. The hike was about 4 miles round trip. Definitely do-able for active children.
