We booked the Safari for a bachelorette party surprise for our friend who is a biologist! We thought it would be a great surprise and it was. I thought the guides were very knowledgable and passionate about their jobs. I have been on several safari's in Africa and learned more at Safari West! That being said, I think that the safari cars are a cool concept but they are incredibly slow & hard for the guides to start. The tour also felt long - 3.5 hours. I thought we would be driving a little more and less stops. I think they could do the same tour in 2 or 2.5 hours and have it be just as enjoyable. That is the reason why I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars. The highlight was definitely driving through the giraffe encounter - if you can ask to be sat on the top of the car for this I'd highly recommend that!

I totally recommend this! It was a relaxing stroll in the Jeep and a unique experience to see the animals up close, most without any barriers between you and them. The tour guide was informative with a lot of random cool facts about the animals.

What a wonderful experience we had here! It was one of the first rains of the year but business went on as usual. We had the best guide ever, Cindy, and everything was smooth. I especially enjoyed the education we were given by our guide. As a retired teacher I learned many, many things about our world from her. Can’t wait to return and do it again without the wet stuff.

What a fun experience! Upon arrival, we were met with a jeep that transported us and all of our road trip gear to our tent for the night. This is Glamping done right! We were given flashlights so we could wander the trails around our site any time of the night to explore animal night time activity. We were also given earplugs in case the animals were a bit excited to have us as guests (we didn't use them). We had our picnic dinner on our deck and did not experience any bugs!! The animals we had access to (you have to buy the Safari separately) were enough to keep us occupied. Ducks (or geese) chasing the flamingos, a mama bird teaching her fledglings to fly, hyenas, monkeys, cheetas, giraffes, among other entertaining animals. Filling breakfast in the morning and the jeep to take us back to our car. Tents were well spaced so we never heard anyone nearby. Such a great experience, I am recommending it to anyone and everyone.

If you are looking for something very unique and memorable, you will love Safari West! I went with my daughter and she loved it, although I think I loved it more than her. Her favorite part was riding on the top level of the jeep. Mine was coming face to face with a giraffe!
The only thing is that I would probably try to time it better because the heat can be unbearable., especially if you are on the top level. They did provide umbrellas for those sitting there which helped a lot!
Our tour guide was very helpful and funny!! Thank you JD for the fun ride and all of the information. We learned a lot. Overall, it was a great activity! However, next time I would probably go when I am visiting San Francisco—not make a trip up north just for this.

Wonderful Adventure!
My son ( 7 years old) and I have gone two years in a row. We live in the bay area and I am a solo mom, so this is a perfect trip for us. This year my mom came and she said it was one of the most awesome experiences.
Lodging
The "tents" are quite luxurious in my opinion. Sure, no AC or TV but thats not what you are there for. The tents are very spacious, have many gorgeous details and the beds are so comfortable. You can look out and see the animals from many tents and you cannot beat the ambiance. My son was 6 and 7 on the trips and enjoyed brining some dolls and art supplies for the evening. When you stay overnight you get to wander the grounds and see many of the animals.
The Animals!
The animals all look so happy and content. One year we splurged for the behind the Scenes and it was 100% worth it! My son got to feed several animals and it was core memory material. I also enjoyed feeding the giraffes : )

Enjoyed a 3-night stay in a great tent cabin. Took my 10-year-old granddaughter and she loved the place. 3 nights is probably a bit much. Can do the whole place in one day with a sleepover. But the safari jeep tour is the highlight and she liked sitting on the top of the jeep. The place is well-kept, and the staff is helpful and friendly. Would encourage families to visit. The kids will remember it forever. And if you can, spend the night. In the evening the animal sounds are amazing and it's also a great wake-up call. Don't expect too much in the food department.

The safari ride through the grounds was amazing. The number of different animals we saw was much more than expected. The drive was great and knowledgeable. We were supposed to go to Africa on safari but health issues prevented it. This was a great substitution. Highly recommended for all ages.

We choose the Royal Winos and Rhinos tour. While touring around, we saw zebra, ostriches, giraffes, rhinos, antelope, and many other animals. Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. When we stopped for wine, there was really a full meal and we barely finished half of the cheese, meats, burgers, crab cakes, etc!
We finished up our visit with a behind the scenes and got to feed the giraffes, porcupines, and birds in the aviary, as well as a few other animals.
It was a highlight of our vacation and highly recommend!

Are there restrictions on what you can bring to the park for safari tours and day trip

My children are too young to ride on the safari tour. Would the walking tour alone be worth it? We plan on staying the night. Thanks in advance

Is dinner worth the price? How far are outside restaurants from the venue. Thinking that maybe we can see other things after the Safari and not stay the whole day there.

I didn’t have dinner there so I can’t comment on worth of it.
The park isn’t isolated. You can hop in your car and be in the next town in a few minutes

Would you think it best to stay one night or two, in order to get the best experience? Also, where are the hillside tents located vs. the antelope alley tents vs. the base camp ones? We'd be looking for perhaps a more secluded (romantic?) one for my wife and me....

One night was great. We did Keeper Of The Day which included overnight stay, lunch two days, dinner and breakfast.
Im curious if the 83$ for an adult ticket includes lunch after or before the guided tour??

We will be in Calistoga for Christmas. So I was thinking after Christmas since we are in the neighborhood we could spend the night here. My husband can’t go on the tours- to bumpy however we would like to spend the night- So are the animals still active at night in late December? can hear them?

Hi, thanks for your question. The animals are usually unpredictable and can act up because of noises or irritations or a number of any other reasons. Think of this as an adventure and prepare accordingly. Earplugs are helpful but won't completely block out the sound. It might be a sleepless night but worth the experience.

We have 8 adults and two kids ages 9 and 7. Wondering if doing the private adventure is worth the extra price? Does the jeep ever stop during the tour to let you watch the animals and take pictures or does it just keep going?

A private tour would be fun. They stop at the various sites and talk about the animals. We played with the giraffes or maybe it is better to say the giraffes played with us. There is also some caged cats and animals to see.

Other than the safari tour, and other specialty activities for purchase, what is available? We are planning to stay for two nights, and will take a private safari, but what do we do the rest of the time? Are we free to walk around the grounds? Are there other amenities? The website is not very helpful in this regard.

You can watch the animals close to the living area, including the cheetah, lemurs, and various birds. Meals are good, but I would think two nights too long.

Hello, Is there bathroom access while on Safari tour? Is it 2-hour continuous sitting in the jeep or do you get to take breaks? Thanks.

Once you are on the jeep there is no access to a bathroom until the tour is over. the jeep portion of the tour can vary, ours was about an hour. this largely depends on how many questions are asked by the guests. There is a portion of the tour before the jeep that is walking, and the guides were really good about ending that portion of the tour right near the restrooms, and reminding everyone that this would be their opportunity to use the facilities before the jeep departed.
