We weren't sure about parking, how to get to the falls and the bay. It all worked out and we scored a late afternoon kayak and trip to Fannette Island (only island in Lake Tahoe). Emerald Bay was serene and Eagle Falls has good views!

I’m sure this is a gorgeous place in the spring but if you do this hike for the falls, don’t do it in July. The water flow was just a trickle.

Such a beautiful hike up to the falls. It is a short, steep hike up. Bring your bathing suit, as you can swim in the falls, there is a beautiful little basin. Bring a lot of sunscreen, hat sunglasses and water shoes and a towel. We befriended a chipmunk who was absolutely fearless and ate from our fingers.

My friends and I did the upper eagle falls trail pretty early on in our trip, and in theory this was a perfectly nice hike. We were there on the 4th of July weekend so everything was packed. We had parked along the highway at some point near Emerald Bay and were just walking the highway to various hikes and vistas. The lower falls looked very popular with families in their bathing suits splashing in the water.
This hike starts off great, kind of shaded and on a board walk. Then you get to the actual start of the hike, and it is entirely uphill on stone cut steps that go on forever. We made it to the bridge and witnessed a proposal, which was super cute, and then stopped to rest our hot feet in the pools of water behind the bridge.
Everyone else kept going and I just stayed to people watch at that awesome little nature-made pool. People definitely came prepared with entire families showing up in bathing suits and wearing water shoes, clearly intending to spend a long time there.
I realized that this was not my favorite hike when I was back at the car and thought I might have dropped the second key to the rental car along the hike. I decided at that point that I’d rather just pay the fee than have to hike back up to the top (luckily I found the key in my purse).

Quick uphill hike to a small waterfall- probably smaller than usual due to the drought, but peaceful nonetheless. Great views too!

Longtime Tahoe visitor for life. Done Eagle Falls trail many, many times over years' with our kids growing up and continue every summer. IMPORTANT - get there early ! [as limited parking along highway other than small parking lot].

Gorgeous hike with views of the Upper Eagle Falls. Came here on a Saturday around 9:30am and the paid parking lot was already full ($10 self-service). You should either arrive here early in the morning on weekends or come during the weekday if possible. We ended up parking for free along the highway about a mile up. There are 3 porta-potties at the trailhead as well as restrooms in a building (still porta-potty toilets). People had dogs with them and plenty of groups had small kids.
It takes about 0.5 mile to cross the bridge to reach the waterfall. It’s steep but there are stone steps. There’s limited shade so wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses/a hat. There were a lot of people as it’s a popular trail, and you can hike further up to Eagle Lake. I’d suggest wearing boots rather than sneakers since some areas were a bit slippery. Overall, it’s a pretty trail with fresh air and nice views.

Parking was a little challenge. And the falls were a bit crowded. The flow of the water was a bit stronger then expected. Get from one side to the other crossing the stream was fun.

Climb past the falls to this beautiful mountain lake. The falls are only about one-third of the way to the lake.
The rocky trail is like climbing many staircases, but not require boulder-hopping. In May, the lake is really beautiful. Parking nearby can be a problem because of crowds. Most of the people stop at the falls, but continue up to the lake.
Be sure to use the porta-potty, since the hike takes a couple of hours round-trip.

The granite "stairs" are a misnomer. One crawls over boulders, steeply uphill, only to be rewarded w/a faucet leak. Hopefully winter snow melt will make a Spring climb worthwhile. The biggest bummer, surprisingly, was the horde of people on an early weekday in latter Oct.! coupled w/the large # NOT wearing or even carrying masks as they passed on narrow, rocky path.
Tahoe area has signs everywhere reminding people to wear masks, & CA. side in large, diverse Placer County which has a good record.
So let us keep the pristine outdoors safe too. Where are all these crowds coming from, mid week?!? Kids too, not on Zoom never mind in class.

I will be hiking with my husband and 2 teenage daughters. My parents may go along however my dad is older , in his 70s. If we bring them along are there places near the trail head to sight see or walk for a bit and or picnic tables if they choose not to hike the trail? The trail may be a bit much for my dad. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

There is a bench not too far up next to a little waterfall. There were a few older people sitting there eating. It is right next to a bridge- they can hang out on the bridge too that overlooks the stream- quite nice and is shaded. They may be there a bit waiting for y’all though. I would not recommend the entire hike for a 70 year old unless they were in great shape.
Is a permit required to do the eagle lake trail hike? If so how much does it cost?

No permit required. If you are just going down to Vikingsholm and then to the Eagle Falls viewpoint you don't need to do any paperwork.
If you are going up the mountain from the parking lot then you are supposed to fill out a day hike permit if you are going more than a few hundred yards. It's free. You may have to pay for parking, but there are some free spaces along Hwy 89

Hi, I believe the Eagle Falls parking lot had envelopes to pay for the parking on your own with no attendant. I'm not sure of the cost which means it wasn't very much. Maybe $5. If you can find a spot in the small lot it is worth the price to support the area for the views you get. When we were there many cars parked along the road outside of the parking area because there is far more interest than the lot can handle. Enjoy.

We were there last November. Trail and parking lot were both accessible, but bathrooms were locked for the season. I think the trail beyond the falls, to Eagle Lake, was closed, but Eagle Falls was open.
What is the earliest time the trailhead opens to get the hiking permit?
