It's a bit impressive, this statue and the welcoming center. They have a little information on the history of the area so it is worth a few minutes to stop here while you are enjoying the beautiful environs.

We were in South Lake Tahoe and heard about this memorial museum so I had to go see it. My wife came along for the beautiful one hour drive around the lake. She stayed in the historic downtown district to shop in the boutiques while I went to the memorial. The museum is free but it was $5 to park - a great deal! I love this type museum. They have a 25 minute movie about the 1846 cross country trip by emigrants seeking their fortunes in California. It explained the string of decisions along the route that ended in the tragic spending of the winter in the mountains covered in snow. The museum also had displays of the building of the intercontinental railroad. About a 1 1/2 hour time for the museum. I did not get to take any of the hiking trails but heard they were interesting too.

We had seen online there was a 3 mile loop to walk so we stopped here before a visit to downtown Truckee. Unfortunately in talking to the visitor center we were told some of that walk would be unmarked. Crazy to us that a State Park wouldn’t be marked well. We opted for the 2.4 round trip to the end of the lake and back. Easy walk on a dirt /paved path. It was a beautiful day to be outside. Lots of great nature spots for pictures. We looked around the center as well with info on the Donner family / pass. Monument outside center is a nice homage.

The memorial was impressionable. There is a short walkway giving us the opportunity to stretch our legs. Also saw some interesting birds that are only seen on the west coast.

Great place to ride bicycles around the park as well as the walking trail lake front. The place is spotless.

I highly recommend you watch the film and walk through the small museum packed with lots of information. Yes you will have to do some reading. The monument outside is nice.
Afterwards we went to walk around beautiful Donner Lake. We packed a picnic lunch and enjoyed a sitting at a shady picnic table. The walk beside the lake does not take that long and there is parking pretty much all the way down.
Enjoyed our time at both places.

I rode MTB on the Emigrant trail. My instructor showed me all of the monuments, placards, and the tree that they set up camp against. It's a place that really brings history right before you, and it's easy to imagine the Donner party camping right in that spot. Sad story, beautiful and stunning trail.

I read a few books about the suffering of the members of the Donner party before this visit. This was good, as the museum was closed (Pandemic). Most visitors would likely not get much out of just walking on the trail and seeing the statues, etc., unless they knew the details and the history (which you cannot get if you can't go inside the museum.)

Museum closed due to covid. The same people who expect their supermarket to be stocked, who shop for clothes and groceries, who go to restaurants, etc., are the people who won't allow us to walk through a museum. Ridiculous! They didn't seem to have a problem with charging you to park, however.

The exhibits may be closed, but this is still a great park with excellent picnic facilities and a beautiful beach. I have spent many happy hours here over the years. I love the views of the Lake and the surrounding mountains in every season. One of my favorite places.

How possible is it to hike in March? Is the snow packed down on trails? Or is just snow shoeing and xc skiing possible?

Depends on the weather and your ability to walk on uneven surfaces. Usually you can park near the lake, right off the highway.

We're planning to go this Friday, is there still snow?

Yes, there is still snow. It's been plowed though. Camp ground is closed, but all the visitor parking is clear. You will see a unattended entrance gate that requests a $5.00 parking fee, which you are supposed to put in an envelope and deposit in a metal cylinder. We didn't, we drove past and parked in the visitor center, walked in (opens at 10:00) and paid there (well worth it, clean restrooms, nice facility). Depending on your love of history, give yourself at least an hour to see the exhibit, including a short, but VERY informative film. i took lots of pics, and read everything, so it took about 2 hours for me. I then drove about 5 min farther up the road to Donner Lake and took more pics. Have fun!!
How old do you have to be to check-in?

Is this the same as Donner Camps Picnic Area? If not, are both worth a visit for a Donner Party enthusiast?

No these are two different areas, Donner Camp picnic area is about 2 miles north of Truckee on hwy 89. It's a great little picnic spot with tables, free standing bbq grills, pit bathrooms and a short 1/4 mile interpretive self guided loop. It's one of the actual camp sites of the ill-fated Donner Party. It is way less crowded than the Donner memorial st.park and is a great spot to avoid the crowds, it also is a popular spot for mountain bikers/hikers to access the immigrant trail.
