We mostly came because of the Easter Scavenger Hunt, but were positively surprised during our visit. The plantation grounds are stunning and well maintained with beautiful marsh views and ancient live oaks. We loved the detailed tour of the plantation house. The volunteers were extremely knowledgeable and clearly love what they do. Great afternoon learning a little about the history of our vacation spot.

This was such an interesting plantation to visit. Very different from others I've been to. I loved the stories and It's history. The land and trees were beautiful. I would definitely recommend this and plan for a couple of hours so you can walk the grounds.

We would recommend you stopping here for a tour.
The woman at the Visitor Center is very polite and friendly. She thinks that the slaves were lucky to live here. It was very difficult to hear this. She should keep those comments to herself. They were extremely racist.
Overall, the plantation is very historical. it has all original contents inside and is a beautiful, but long walk through the oak trees filled with Spanish Moss.

I went with high expectations after having been to several other plantations in VA and LA. This was more of a farmhouse, but the property was beautiful. There are plenty of parking outside of the VC. The woman in the VC booking tours was polite. Tours are only on the top of the hour so be sure to plan around that, but you can walk the grounds while you are waiting. It was a neat glimpse into GA history, but nothing I would recommend going out of your way to see.

The woman in the visitor center was wonderful as was the informative film and museum. However, our 1:00 tour of the plantation never happened. After waiting for 25 minutes, we gave up. If a tour is scheduled to start at 1:00, it should. People should not be kept waiting. We even called back to the visitor center and we’re told she would try to contact the woman who was probably still giving her 12:00 tour. We had to wait on the front porch in the cold wind. It was a waste of our time.

We arrived 5 min past 1:00 pm not realizing that tours were available only once in an hour (no indication of this rule on parks website) At park’s “welcome center” we were told that we could not join the 1:00 pm tour and had to wait another 55 minutes for 2:00 pm tour. Unfortunately we were on a tight schedule so waiting 1 h was not an option. We could not see the grounds either without paying full admission price that should have included the tour of the main house. Effectively we had to leave without seeing anything thanks to some obstinate, miserable and grumpy state park employee. I guess $0 is better than $26. Go Georgia!

I can’t say enough about this wonderful plantation that has become a GA State Park. The guide was wonderful. It was a unique home with a very interesting family history. Expansive property and many name I knew from history.
I wish I had been able to make a day of it and picnic on the grounds. So quite and still, not your typical state park.

The trees were gorgeous, the people nice, and the tour was good. However, the lack of information on the enslaved people was disconcerting. Over 350 people worked here but the tour guide just said they were treated well. She also mentioned that it was OK that the owners left the plantation during the hot summers so they didn't get malaria from the mosquitoes while blacks continued to work because they all had sickle cell anemia and that prevented them from getting malaria (it reduces the chance, not prevents and has a whole range of health issues along with early deaths). Instead of talking about life as a slave, the guide emphasized the financial problems of the plantation owners after the slaves were freed. The guide also was indignant that the US government asked Southern soldiers for an oath of allegiance after the Civil War.
As I said, an interesting point of view.

I'm so glad I did some research and made a trip to see this on our trip to St Simons/Jekyll Island. You start at the visitor's center and see a short film, then make a walk through the absolutely stunning grounds (it is a bit of a walk for those with physical issues - my husband drove his electric scooter which was easier) up to the main house where there are tours on the hour. The guide was informative and the house is beautifully maintained. Definitely worth a visit. (Side note - bring bug spray - we got eaten alive on the walk up to the house!)

Has a friendly and informative staff. The movie explaining the family background was excellent as well as the small attached museum.
As a prior docent at an oregon historic home, I felt the home was very well done. And the furniture, accessories and pictures really contributed to a sense of family. Was also glad to see pictures and former workers talking about the economics of rice production and the history of slave workers. More stories of that era would be interesting.
I am hopeful that the house/grounds can continue telling the story and hope using more social media can spread the word about this hidden gem.
