Located on Moresby Island, and approximately 10-minutes from the Kwuna ferry landing, the Onward Point Trail represents a leisurely, brief hike – just over 5 minutes one-way – to a beautiful cedar gazebo. While at the gazebo, gaze out towards Skidegate Inlet and view the mighty seagulls as they dive for food; the abundant seals as they float about and cause mischief; and the graceful eagles as they soar overhead. If you’re lucky, you may even spy a grey whale or an orca in springtime. After spending some time admiring the flora and nature of Haida Gwaii, continue along the loop back towards your vehicle.

That’s my Coles Notes summary of the Onward Point Trail and, indeed, it is pretty straightforward. Once you reach the trailhead, you’ll observe that the signage identifies it as “moderate difficulty.” I think this is only partly true. You’ll immediately notice that the trail splits into a Y (the loop). I recommend going counter clockwise – to the right – as it’s the easier route. There is some deadfall to be wary of, but the trail is relatively flat and takes you through some nice spruce, ferns and cedar trees. If you continue along the loop, from the gazebo, the trail does increase in difficulty but only because the earth is soft in some areas. If you wish to avoid this, I’d suggest simply coming back the way you came.

From a touristy perspective, the Onward Point Trail is a nice break from modernity. The trail itself is pretty standard, but the handsome cedar gazebo more than makes up for it. Thus, if you’re traveling to – or from – the ferry and have time to kill, I’d suggest checking this site out. The views are nice and the fresh air even better!

NOTE: The Onward Point Trail does connect with the “Around the Pond” trail extension.

After reading about this on TripAdvisor, we stopped here on our way to the Kwuna ferry dock for what promised to be a brief, reinvigorating hike. As we approached the entranceway to Onward Point trail, there was a split in the hiking path. Should we go to the left or to the right? We decided to go on the rightward trail because . . . no reason. It proved to be a good stroll through the lovely forest. There were many dead stumps, mossy peaks, mosquitoes and viewpoints towards Skidegate Inlet.

It's about a 20-minute walk to the viewing gazebo. Beautiful scenery! Romantic! The waves crashed upon the rocks like a thousand orchestras singing their tune. We sat in the lovely gazebo hut for a few moments before deciding to do the "loop" of the trail. This would be a lovely spot to view whale life but, sadly, we did not see any on this walk.

Onward Point is a "moderate" hike. When we entered, we found the trail path on the RIGHT much easier than the one on the left (the "loop"). The very soft and steep ground in some areas made for a difficult walk, but it wasn't without its rewards: Ladyslipper flowers were found and seen! Yeah!!!

We would recommend the keepers of this site to put signs at the entrance to this trail, maybe indicating that the LEFT trail is a bit tougher in difficulty than the RIGHT trailway.

Very quick 20 minute walk with an amazing view of Skidegate Inlet! Whales are often seen in Spring and wild mushrooms grow there in the Fall. It is really a trail for all seasons!

We stopped here just after we got off the port alliford ferry. There is free parking, you just have to watch for the sign on the highway! It's a great little hiking loop, with beautiful views. An easy walk for most people. Note that it isn't wheelchair accessible. It's easy to get off the trail and over to the rocky beach.

The parking lot is right on the highway between Sandspit and the Alliford Bay ferry. This is a loop trail out to a covered gazebo viewpoint for whale watching. We were here at the wrong time of year for whales but it would be a great place to watch them. The views across the water were lovely.

The trail is slightly rugged with some elevation change. It is not wheelchair accessible but you don't have to be overly fit to enjoy it. There are some stairs on the western part. I prefer going down stairs to going up so I suggest you go around counter-clockwise.
