First off, the back office staff at Voodoo were wonderful with the booking and accommodations and they were super helpful in rebooking my group when our trip was blown out due to 8' seas and gale-force winds the week before. After almost $6k for 12hrs on the water, we had a single 25lb yellowfin.
For the cost and all the hype that surrounds Venice, they need to find a way to repeatably deliver. It is great that you have four outboards and can cruise at 40mph all day, but you are paying for every drop of gas those motors eat. You also have to catch your own live bait (the boats are kept in fresh water and everything offshore is salt). Why has no one figured this out? Send a boat out an hour before to catch everyone's bait for their entire fleet, no?
By my estimate, we spent 80 gallons of fuel and four hours of our morning to catch a single live bait fish making that an $800 piece of bait. We then spent another hour scouring the ocean for jellyfish trying to net fish below them. We didn't have a line in the water in the first five and a half hours.
The rest of the day was a high-speed run from rig to rig. We racked up 220 miles that day. With the lack of live bait we had a very set course of chunking frozen bait on lines like a head boat. They didn't want anyone casting or jigging. They didn't want anyone tangling their lines. Had their techniques yielded anything this would be a very different review. It honestly started to have the feel of a head boat off of Jersey, but with no music and less beer.
The only fish of the day was caught in the last hour on one of the few live baits we had. We were minutes away from getting skunked. We were very unceremoniously dropped back at our houseboat. No one from Voodoo ever followed up. They were likely as happy as we were that we were leaving.
To add insult to injury, that same day, their social media posted a great haul of tuna and tagged our captain. Maybe there was a timing issue with the post (it was delayed from the prior day?). You don't see a social media post of someone holding a gallon ziplock of tuna that often, do you?

Capt. Chad P and deckhand Barrett had us on fish right away, first boat on the tuna grounds!! Put 8 tuna in the box and then limit of red snapper!! All I can say is this trip was a dream trip!! Thanks Voodoo!

Boat we chartered was not working so we got a different one. Captain did not seem like he wanted to even be there. Told him we fish for tuna all the time and have our own boat and I was here to try Louisiana. Didn’t matter, the mate and captain were the ones fishing and we were to stay out of their way and be quiet until it was time to wind the fish they had chummed, baited and hooked. Don’t touch the rods, don’t touch the baits, just wind when told (and only when told). Ran 2.5 hrs out, fished 2 hours and ran 2.5 hrs back home on the first day back at 12:30. I called Brittany to complain that the website said “10-12 hour days” and that I paid $3,500 with tip to fish 2 hrs and she was very unapologetic. “Did you catch some fish? So what’s the problem?” Apparently if you catch a few fish your day automatically ends. Not sure why the website shows racks of dozens of tunas because you get to catch a couple then the day is over. Second day was an identical replay of day 1; a 7 hour day back at the dock at 12:30 even though we complained the day before. Captain wanted to get back to the dock as fast as possible and be done with us. He did the bare minimum to justify taking the boat home. So, $7,000 for 4 hrs of fishing + travel + accommodation. These guys are in it to do the absolute bare minimum they have to do to keep your money and keep you from suing them for a refund. I doubt I’d even go back to Louisiana after that experience.

Absolutely amazing day on the water with Captain Chad and Mate Barrett. They were a seamless team. There were four of us, we had eight tuna on the boat very quickly. Set out for a swordfish afterwards (our dynamic duo had brought 160 pounder in the day before) No luck there but who’s complain and after what we already had in the boat! Highly highly recommend. We will be back.
The boat was extremely fast, but they had comfortable beanbag chairs so you didn’t feel any bump on the water. Just an amazing day!!!

Booked a trip with this company for June 2021 and first experience was the horrible communication process between company and customer. It was common to go a day a more with no response to questions. After finally getting trip booked and our trip date approached, we had to move the date due to a tropical storm. Obviously that is uncontrollable so no problem there. However we also had a condo reserved for the night before our trip and it was unavailable for the new date and therefore VooDoo fishing moved us from the condo to a houseboat. The houseboat had major power issues in the downstairs areas which couldn’t get fixed. It was also exhibiting power fluctuations which seemed concerning. Than to top all that off, all of the smoke detectors on the entire boat did not work. The fishing was fun, but way over priced. The safety issues continued on the water. No one went over any safety briefing or said where life vesta were. I asked and was told they were under a seat in storage but when I looked there were none. Also we had a sick passenger and the captain left the boat running tied up to a oil rig and deckhand had put our sick passenger up in the driver area (which is the only area that has some shade) and when she got sick it the throttle and sped the boat into the rig. Honestly we were all lucky we didn’t sink out there. As mentioned, don’t expect any shade as they have no canopy covers. The bathroom on the boat even though it said it had one was unusable or they didn’t want you using so they said it is out of service. So for 12 hours guys and girls have to pee or poop in a bucket. Totally unacceptable. Would not book ever again with this company. I also expect to file some complaints based on the described scenarios and the money charged with no compensation.

Great experience with Captain Alan! By far the best offshore charter I’ve ever been on. He was very helpful and absolutely hilarious. Felt like I was fishing on a friends boat. Not to mention the fish he put us on! Can’t wait to get back out there and go fishing with Captain Alan!

If your looking for a charter out of Venice, voodoo is definitely the one to go with. the management's friendly and professional the equipment is the best money can buy and the captains and crew are second to none. You can't put a price on experience and knowledge of the local fishery and these guys have it down to a science. The most recent trip me and my crew went out with captain tuck and seth was our mate on the 39 foot yellowfin. Tuck and seth were on point we landed a 136lb 80lb 70lb and 60lb yellowfin and cut off several others the trip was a huge success. I highly recommend voodoo, thanks so much tuck, seth, and Brittany. We will be back soon

My husband and 4 friends went on a trip with this charter company. My husband has been a tournament fisherman for 40 years and there is no fish that he isn't capable of catching. The captain on their trip made a lot of mistakes about where to fish, and how fast to troll - and when my husband would say something about what he thought they should be doing - the captain told him"and you're telling me how to find fish". Anyway, the whole bunch was not happy with the trip and when they got in they had caught some other kinds of fish and they didn't even get to take a picture with them as the captain sent them down to be cleaned before they were even off the boat. They had to "borrow" someone else's catch and took a picture with it. This captain was a younger man and, according to my husband, not open to any suggestions from them. I think for as much as this trip cost, they should do whatever the customer wants them to do.

First and foremost we met our objective. We caught a 103 pound yellowfin tuna. It was the only fish our boat hooked. Our travel companions on a second boat caught 6 yellowfin in the 20-30 pound range. We caught fish.
Things to consider. Venice, LA if you are not near the area or made the trip specifically to fish yellow fin, is not easy to get to. We came in the night before our trip and stayed on the Voodoo Houseboat with meal service. We did this as shopping, groceries are not nearby, nor are there many eating options in the area. So from our groups perspective, it has a haul to get too.
Very naive on our part, we were not expecting rough conditions as we encountered. Our group has fished Cabo, Costa Rica, Sitka, Alaska, Florida, Belize, but as a concesus we had not fished in as rough conditions. It was the trip to the fishing grounds that was difficult. We went 55 miles into the gulf. Second boat went almost 80 miles. Maybe a different time of the year or calmer day this is not an issue. But it took almost 5 hours (including catching bait) to truly begin fishing.
We marked many fish, took two hours to hook our tuna and almost and hour to bring in. Crew, Captain Chad and Tucker were awesome. And catching the fish was a thrill.
Ride back in with wind on back took 2.5 hours. Rough, but nothing like the ride out.
This gets to be an expensive trip. With boat, gas and tip, over $3k for 3 fisherman. We had 6 in our group, we elected two boats. We could have done 1 boat, but all felt too crowded. I have done 4 days of salmon fishing in Alaska with lodging for that amount. The Marlin, Tuna, Mahi Mahi boat in Cabo is $1,200 with tip.
So it not an inexpensive trip.
