I didn't make it to the Breton National Wildlife Refuge but I took a long drive on a rainy day to the end of Louisiana 23. I was hoping their would be more to see. Towards the end, it looked like a nice rookery in the cypress trees. that was pretty much the highlight before you hit the Venice Marina. It is a bit odd to driving along 23 and see a massive ship in the channel cruising along, partially hidden by the levee. When you get to Venice, you are only a few feet above sea level, making any storm risky business.

Drove to the end of the road and did some photography. Our overseas guests loved it.
Not a lot to see, but plenty of birdlife and open spaces. Highly recommend for a day trip.

This island (Chandeleur) actually represents the outer boundary of the old Mississippi River Delta from any earlier Age. Our group did a lot of seining here and came up with an abundance of species. There is also an interesting salt flat in the middle of this beautiful cresent-shaped barrier island. The Breton National Wildlife Refuge is phenomenal and should not be missed!

Which might have more to see at a different time of year.
We drove till the road ended, just to get a sense of the surrounding landscape. Though not here, we saw plenty of birds.

We fish a lot of areas off Venice and this is very good. Lots of cool wildlife in the area and just a beautiful way to spend a fall day. Very enjoyable.

come and see and fish this island before the next big storm washes it away. very good fishing in your own rig or fishing charter boat.

I was in love with the scenery in this area. I was surprised I enjoyed it so much. The river is beautiful right there and seeing the ships coming into New Orleans was a treat.

As we left Venice to sail to America plus viewed Venice in Florida decided to drive the furthest South of Louisiana. It was so cold today a drive was one way of keeping warm. We could never have the imaginaries to see the diversity of industry on this land strip. My husband being an industry nut it was worth the drive to wet his appetite. Even I could not believe the trip. This strip of land could have been utilised for tourism although without industry we would not be where we are today.
