We spent a dream-like day at this beautiful place ... the architecture, amazing art, beautiful grounds, walking trails, glorious terrace, and cafe are all exceptional. We can't wait to go back.

Great Museum. We saw the Munch exhibit. They also have a treasure trove of other great art including a number of Renoirs I had never seen before. They have a nice little coffee/lunch area.

What a fantastic museum. I loved the Edvard Munch Trembling Earth exhibit they had running when I went. The other parts of the Clark’s collection are wonderful too. I love Renoir and they had many Renoir pieces. I highly recommend visiting this gem of a museum in the Berkshires.

We visited while on vacation in MA from the UK after a recommendation from a bookshop in Stephentown! This is a really engaging gallery with a fabulous building and beautiful grounds. Architecture is a personal taste, but I loved it - even if it was a little like a bad guy’s lair from a spy movie!!
There were activities for the children to get involved in (although not easily found) and the visiting “Trembling Earth” exhibition of Munch was good to see.
The outside seating area near the water was beautiful. If we lived closer(!) we would visit very frequently. I’m sure we’ll be back.

A Superb Museum! An amazing collection of Renoir and other impressionists, along with a selection of art across the ages. The physical setting is exquisite, surrounding a pond, with ample seating to relax at the water. Plus, a world-class exhibit of the art of Edvard Munch. Do not miss this jewel!

The Clark has an impressive collection of Impressionists paintings. The exhibit of paintings by E. Munch - the single show in America - is well worth a visit. His paintings are so much more than The Scream. Your ticket allows entry on two days. Consider visiting on two days to thoroughly enjoy the extensive permanent collection- including many by Rembrandt, all the favorite Impressionists, and American Winslow Homer- and also enjoy the Munch exhibition. Free tickets for one of the two daily Munch tours are given out starting at 10:00. The tours are very informative and worth arriving early to get. It is also less crowded in the morning. Lots of free parking. Cafe has nice lunch options. Sitting outside by the pool provides a peaceful break. The Williams Inn is a wonderful place to stay minutes away and right by the downtown.

Beautifully situated against the backdrop of the Berkshires in Williamstown, a college town straight out of central casting.
Impressive permanent collection, library and very well curated special exhibitions, most recently the Edvard Munch. Frequent concerts and lectures. Stunning trails for hiking if you need a brake, comfy seating overlooking the reflection ponds and hillside.
Cafe has a well-priced and healthy selection of homemade treats. Lockers available. Free parking onsite. ADA access. No galleries specifically geared toward children, who might be better directed toward Mass MOCA.
Just over 3 hours from NY and a world away. A welcome respite from the chaos in all seasons.

Chairs on the deck provide great views and the walking trails are yet another plus.

The Berkshires in general is pretty casual. I'm sure you can wear anything--jeans are OK, and no one really dresses up. You might want to dress a bit more nicely but there will be people there who dress down.

Hello,
we are planning our trip to New England in sept/oct 2017. We are going to be in the area of the Clark institute on a Friday afternoon.
Could you please advise me of opening times and cost. I have read that admission is free on a Friday, could you please confirm this. If not the case, are there concessionary rate for senior citizens??
Can you also recommend other places of interest in the vicinity.
I look forward to your reply.
Many thanks

The Clark is open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. during the time you are planning to visit. Admission is $20 per person. I'm not sure where you read that admission is free on Friday - that is not the case. We do offer free admission on the first Sunday of the month from September - May.
For a complete list of things to do in the area you should visit the 1berkshires website.
Enjoy your visit!
Suggestions on where to stay in the area if we are coming to see the Clark Museum and are students free from anywhere or only students of the local university?

It's free to the public on Fridays through the summer season. Otherwise, it's $20 on the other days for adults.
Sorry, I don't have any recommendations on hotels since it was a day trip travel.

People are advising to get there early. Planning to visit either a Tuesday or Wednesday. Do we need to show up before 10?

Good morning, and thanks for your question! Arriving by 10 am is a good idea. If you can get here a little before then, the summer café, Francine's, opens at 9:30 am, so you can grab a cup of coffee and a snack and sit outside by the reflecting pool. I would recommend arriving by 11 am at the latest, but the earlier the better. Hope that helps!

Visited the Clark yesterday & the Van Gogh etc.. were spectacular. Wish we could say the same for the staff at the Van Gogh exhibit. It was pouring rain; there is extensive walking so we had an umbrella (a sml one now folded). We were told, only by the Van Gogh guides, that the umbrella was verboten. Huh? No prob at the lobby or in the other exhibits. It was pouring!! I had to cram the offending thing into my purse - still not acceptable! Why the rudeness? Why the different rules for different exhibits? We were so embarassed that we left without viewing the full exhibit we had come to see. We are 2 professionals in our 60s...certainly not worthy of so much negative attention. We have been visiting the Clark for years but probably will not be returning, sadly.

My sincerest apologies that you were treated rudely by the security staff. No one - regardless of age or professional status - should be poorly treated when visiting the Clark. I will discuss this incident with our security and visitor services teams.
Umbrellas are not allowed in any of the museum galleries, nor have they ever been. Our policy, as stated on our website is:
UMBRELLAS
Umbrellas, including large, small, and hand-held pop-up styles, are not permitted in the galleries. Umbrella bags will be available at the entrance to the Clark Center, and storage racks and lockers are located in the lower level coatroom of the Clark Center, entries to the Manton Research Center, and adjacent to the restrooms at the Lunder Center at Stone Hill. You may also hang your umbrella with your coat on our coat racks.
I hope you will reconsider your decision to not return to the Clark.
