I went to Bozeman the week Yellowstone was closed from flooding. The town was packed likely with other tourists who had to change their plans last minute. So much traffic. It was insane. I'm assuming it's not normally like that.
I wasn't going to attempt parking on the street and thought I could park in a lot behind the museum. Nope. It's just for the courthouse. Only found three spots behind the museum and they were taken. Eventually found parking a couple streets down. The surrounding neighborhoods have amazing looking houses so the walk was enjoyable.
The Gallatin History Museum was actually pretty neat. Glad I didn’t give up. The lady who took the admission fee was really nice and gave me a quick explanation of stuff. Also talked about the Sweet Pea Festival in August. The building used to be the jail and the sheriff’s quarters up until 1982. Besides all the jail stuff they had some other neat exhibits about the area. Bought four books from the bookstore. They had a really good variety of books.

First time here. Really enjoyed our visit. Park for free on street in front. Helps you as far as context if you have read up on Montana history beforehand, which we had--so we learned a lot. Not for the stroller set. Fascinating exhibits-be sure to read the descriptions and displays. Be sure to also go upstairs and watch the videos. There are like 5 or so of them. We watched all of them. We had an attorney in our party, who really enjoyed some of the commentaries on the legal proceedings in the olden days. Take your time and enjoy. (Good Korean lunch spot a couple of doors down)

Our boys had a wonderful time. We learned from older lady who was at front desk a lot about Bozeman history. Very well set up exposition. The jail was really something.

Lots of interesting exhibits about the settlers, the jail prisoners and a jail break
We especially liked the short films that were on display in the small cinema. They were very well done.

This is an old jail that has exhibits of what happened in the jail from the founding of Bozeman to the time the jail was no longer used. The exhibits were interesting. But the lighting was poor making it hard to see things & many items were missing descriptions. Also, the staff was not impressive. The volunteer who took my admission when I got there started a tour for some people who came in right behind me without giving me a map or museum brochure. If you are in town stop by because this museum is unique. But, don't make a special trip to come here.

For a relatively small museum, this is very nicely done. The docent and staff were knowledgeable and friendly. The exhibits are well done and informatively labelled. They have an impressive book store whose contents cover a wide array of Western-themed topics.
The gallows, use only once, was an interesting touch, as was the escape story.

Acoustics and lighting not conducive to learning. Voices carry so for example when the movie is playing you cannot comfortable hear the information. It is stuffy and warm. Nice to see the actual architecture of the jail. Most of the information can be condensed into 2-3 sentences instead of 15. A collection of historical items that mesh into a museum.

Great museum. In and out in 2 hours. Very hands on. Many great books for sale (purchased one 50% off). Learned a lot about the local area. I suggest for everyone. The staff was informative and really made the visit. Thank you!

This Gallatin History Museum is all about sheriffs and prisoners. It was really interesting. The good ones and the prisoners.
There were some that were dangerous. They were put in isolation.
We could read what these criminals did. It was horrified!
Worthwhile to see!

Admission is $7.50 for adult, $5.00 for seniors and veterans, and all students regardless of age are free.
Do you accommodate old grammas? I love museums, but like to take them at my own slow pace

You could spend the entire day here if you'd like. We do have an elevator that allows you access to the second floor. While we are handicap accessible our building was built in 1911 and the doorways are a little narrow for some motorized chairs. Hope this helps! Our apologies for not answering sooner as we did not see this question.
