I had written about Ellinokamara a year ago and there has not been any change or improvement. The detour to Agios Minas cave chapel is still the best.

But this time I became aware of a building at the end of the village of Agia Marina towards Elllinokamara, which didn't strike me as a regular home. It turned out to be a small, family run cheese factory and we were very welcome to have a look at it. After putting on some plastic cover over our shoes, we could watch a mother with son and daughter producing 'Graviera', a hard yellow cheese, 'Sitaka', a buttery cream, an important ingredient of the local cuisine, as well as excellent yoghurt. We were offered to try all of it. Naturally all products are also for sale.

So the hike to Ellinokamara is still great, thanks to the views, the Agios Minas cave and the Tirokomeio (cheese dairy).

There are not many natural or cultural attractions on the island of Kasos, whose main attraction is the fact that it is not spoilt by tourism.

After an about 30 minutes walk from the church of Agia Marina in the village of the same name can be found a cave with walls dated to the 5th century BC. Early travellers and archaeologists have suggested that it was used for ritual purposes.

There are no signs to show the way to this cave, but suddenly one encounters a very beautiful flagstone walkway with steps, beginning at nowhere and leading up to the place, which could have been one of the main attractions of the island. On a board at the beginning it says that the construction of this path from 2009 was budgeted with € 325'000, of which 75% came from the EU.

Before the cave one gets stopped by a thick fence, made of anything available, like thorny branches, wooden planks, wire, probably done by a local shepherd. No official opening. Since we didn't come here for nothing, we managed to get over this obstacle, just to discover that the cave itself is also closed and this time there was no chance to get inside.

There is a fine wall, which covers the entrance, obviously from antiquity and through some holes in it one can peak inside, where there are more constructions in high quality masonry.

The view from here is quite superb. And if one goes back the flagstone walkway and turns left at its end on a path one arrives after 20 minutes at the cave-chapel of Agios Minas, which is open, and which makes this whole excursion still worthwhile.
