We read from a travel website that this was an easier trail, but as two very inexperienced hikers, we wouldn't consider it that. There is basically no groomed portion of the trail. Getting to the end of this out-and-back requires some imagination and careful foot-planting to climb up the rocks, over some wet streams. If you have a decent cardio system and are good with your feet and hoisting yourself up small distances (1/2 - 1 foot), you should be fine. Wear good shoes; we were in running sneakers but proper hiking shoes might be better.
It's basically uphill the whole way until you get to the money shot at the top, a view of the Vegas valley and the strip. It was cool when we went and debated turning back after a never-ending climb, but it was definitely worth sticking with it.
Don't go when raining, the rocks will get slippery. It started raining/snowing when we were completed our descent. I wouldn't have wanted to go uphill with any amount of precipitation for fear of slipping. Also, don't take kids younger than 15 on this trail.

*Time Required: 2.5 hrs (excluding stops)
⚠️ Best time to go is between October to April. Cellphone signal is weak so download the map or the app #AllTrails in advance. Prepare to use both hands when scrambling to avoid slips and falls. It is discouraged to hike this trail for 24 hours after a rain, flash flooding may occur during/after desert rain. Bring food and water, wear hiking shoes and a hat, and do not disturb or feed wildlife.

This rush hike over red sandstone walls leads to a hidden water pocket and a great view of the Las Vegas valley. As the most popular trail in Red Rock Canyon, expect other hikers along the way. This hike combines elements of the history, geology, beauty, and fun that makes Red Rock Canyon famous!
The first 30 yards of the trail is shared with the Turtlehead Peak Trail. Once you reach the 1st dry wash and see a fork, make a right at the fork following the Agave Roasting Pit trail sign. Hike up the carved stairs and do some light scrambling. You’ll reach the tanks after 0.75 miles. The trail ends here, but we continued past the tanks - found a great spot to rest and enjoyed the Las Vegas City view while snacking.

Visitors center is very interesting. There are multiple trails to choose from. My wife and I decided to do the Calico Tanks hike and it was a bit more challenging than we expected, but it was well worth the effort. We went in July and started the hike shortly after 6 am and were so glad we did. The hike took about two hours and it was getting hot by the time we returned. There are portions of the hike that are mildly challenging and would not be recommended for someone with small children or fear of heights.

We really enjoyed this hike. The rocks are really pretty and there is a great view from the top. You do have to like / be comfortable scrambling on rocks. I would definitely wear hiking boots or some shoes that have good traction. It is a popular hike so you will see other people and you have to make a reservation for the scenic drive if you want to get to the trailhead during regular hours (8-4).

It's a must go,see, and explore. This was out second time and it didn't disappoint. The distance back and forth is relatively short. But the route is very unique and for an average tourist, not an avid hiker, I consider it challenging. You have to have good shoes as ankle and side wall support is very important to ensure proper balance and control.
Anyway, be prepared to crawl on fours a few times ascending or descending as the height changes require you to do so. A very few can leap or jump! At the end of the trail you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Vegas Valley, the City-Strip, and the nearby Red Rock mountains. I love the trail. Round trip is ~2 hours.

I personally think this is a hard trail. I went here during the Winter and there was still ice on the rocks so it wasn't hard to slip and fall. Thankfully, no one in my party fell. It took two hours to make it to the end of the trail where you can see the Vegas strip in the distance and one hour to make it back. I recommend to bring some water with you, maybe even snacks if you are prone to hunger. I wore sneakers on this trail and that worked fine.

Calico Tanks Trail is located in Red Rock Canyon. It is about 2.5 miles long with 420 feet of elevation gain. Most of the trail is easy, but it does have several moderate scrambles up sandstone slopes. The trail basically winds through a canyon colored in both yellow and red sandstone and ends at a sandstone-cradled tank. A great hike that showcases the beauty of Red Rock.

This trail wasn’t too difficult and lots of see! Some were exploring through rock climbing however, most were just hiking. So interesting to see all the variation of colors in the canyon and you seriously can not take a back pic anywhere!

Toegang tot de trail is vanaf de 3e parkeerplaats binnen de Red Rock Canyon. Erg bijzonder en mooi, met op het einde een aantal pittige klimmers. Hierna prachtig uitzicht op Las Vegas en de Strip. Prima te doen op een paar stevige sportschoenen

Der Hinweg dauert für einen geübten Wanderer ca. 1 Std. - im Winter, wenn es gerade um den eigentlichen Tank herum ein wenig "eisig" ist, kann es vielleicht ein paar Minuten länger dauern - oben angekommen hat man einen sehr guten Blick in Richtung Las Vegas. Absolut lohnenswert!

Hello,
We (2 adults and two teenagers) are around Las Vegas end of December.
Just wander if this time is suitable for a hike into Calico Tanks Trail? Or some other places in Red Rock Canyon?
