After well over a year of fanfare, Whole Foods finally opened in the space at Durgin Square formerly occupied by Shaw’s Supermarket.

I shopped there to see what it was like.

I got two ears of corn. No price was posted at the bin. At the checkout, I learned that they were 50 cents each.

Also in the Produce Dept., I saw bananas at 69¢/lb. Cherries were $5.99/lb.

Organic or not, the prices seemed to run 10% to 20% higher than prices for similar items at the three other nearby grocery stores.

I will say that quality appeared to be good.

But, overall, I was not impressed with Whole Foods; therefore, my opinion of Durgin Square hasn’t changed much. It’s slipped a little.

I rate Durgin Square at 3.50. The other stores are worth a visit.

TJ Maxx, Plato’s Closet, an upscale thrift shop with mostly like-new merchandise, Home Goods, Guitar Center & Guitar Studio, and Aspen Dental are joined together in this curved strip mall along with Pet Life, the Maine-based regional pet supplies chain.

At one end is the empty Shaw’s Supermarket which was closed in February 2019 due to under-performance caused by high prices compared to those of two competitor about ¼ mile away in each direction.

Federal Savings Bank, The Vitamin Shop, GameStop, and an empty Ruby Tuesday are stand-alones along the Woodbury Avenue perimeter. The Ruby Tuesday closed due to its mediocre food and substandard service.

Tropical Café, Qdoba, and My Reis Salon are in a section together.

On the day of my visit on the Memorial Day Weekend, TJ Maxx and Plato’s Closet were both doing a brisk business.

Shoppers at Plato’s Closet were mostly Millennials. I was impressed with the quality of the clothes and a few pairs of shoes I looked at there. There was a pair of sneakers that had never been worn. The clothes were from many high-end brands.

Shoppers of all ages were in TJ Maxx. I was shopping luggage, purses, shoes, housewares, pet toys and supplies, and seasonal items. There were some adorable clothes for infants and toddlers. There were also some nice clothes for youngsters through pre-teens.

In the course of browsing, I ran into a friend and her daughter who’d just graduated from college in Boston. They’d already snagged a few bargains.

There were very good buys in both stores.

For its location on Woodbury Avenue near other retail shopping at The Mall at Fox Run, The Crossings at Fox Run, and BJ’s, plus the mix of stores, services, banking, dining, and potential for the two vacant spaces, I rate Durgin Square at 3.75.
