It is coastal New Jersey so of course a big part of the year everything wants to eat you here. The typical for October cooler but still pleasant weather is perfect for hiking here. Green head flies and other pests seemed gone, ticks calmed down and we enjoyed extensive hiking. We topped it off with the usual bird-watching drive with the silhouette of Atlantic City on the horizon.
The fee-paying station is located adjacent to the parking lot and toilets.

We loved the bird trail drive, really a lot of fun, you drive out into the mud flats on top of a dike. However, the visitor center is only open for limited hours on limited days. We also tried to walk a trail, but were attacked by biting green headed flies.

We had visited once before--- just driving through--- and had not been that impressed. Today was a whole different experience. By both walking and driving, we saw vistas and birds we had not observed in the first visit. We were the only people on the trails and our on-foot exploration allowed us to take our time in listening for calls and observing with no distractions. In addition, on the drive the birds were closer in and more diversified than what we experienced the first time. We hope to return soon and have an even better day!

It was windy and chilly so we opted for the driving tour, but there are beautiful trails for hiking on the premises. The Visitor's center has a lot of information and very worth stopping in. The docent gave us some background information and tips for making the most of the driving tour. We saw lots of species of birds. Climb the towers for awesome views of the refuge!

Beautiful drive through marsh perfect for viewing all kinds of water birds. We saw Buffleheads, Marsh Hawks, Great Blue Herons, White Herons, Egrets, Snow Geese, various species of duck, etc. Definitely recommend the drive.

Oh what you can see if you take the time to look. Slow down, get off the phone and see the wonders of this amazing park. The birding was excellent and the views were incredible. This is a little known gem of a park just waiting for you - - no crowds and beautiful beaches. It has it all. Best of all: it belongs to all of us Americans.

Favorite refuge along the Jersey Coast for wildlife photgraphy. No matter the time of year, my wife and I are never disappointed.

We visited outside of the main birding season. All facilities including visitor center were closed. The Long Beach Island refuge was also closed.
The drive around the marshes was open and fun.
Observed many ospreys, ibis, gulls, cormorants, egrets, herons and more.
The roseate spoonbill was a big surprise.
The walks in the woods were troubled by aggressive insects. We had ticks up our (long pants) legs: beware.
Returning during migration season.

The ride through the marshes surrounded by water was beautiful. There were swans, turtles and fish to see. The lookout was fun to climb and pictures we took stunning.

Road is best suited for hybrid, or mountain bikes, not road bikes. The surface is small gravel. Could be very windy.

I didn’t get to the Visitor Center so I’d like to know if there is more than one entrance. I drove the 8 mile loop yesterday. Can’t wait to come back when the snow geese return.

I would like to stop over and see swans ,i'm in my RV , for a few days. I was near there close to fort Dix and could hear them some years ago but couldn't find them. should be in the area some where around the 18th of this month. any advice would be helpful.

Weather will be better this week however i agree you should call first. There were a few last summer. It changes all the time so enjoy………
