I recently had the great pleasure of dining at two 3 Michelin star restaurants (Schwarzwaldstube in Baiersbronn Germany and Cheval Blanc in Basel), and the fantastic O Paparico in Porto Portugal, which would surely have 3 stars if rated. Blue Hill, despite being more expensive than all those incredible experiences, could not begin to compare. Most importantly, the food is only ok - there was never a moment when my group tasted a dish and sighed with pleasure, which occurred at nearly every serving at those better restaurants. Blue Hill's priority seems to be a simplicity of natural ingredients, without ancillary flavorings getting in the way. But gee, I can eat a cherry tomato or a head of baby lettuce, sans any work from the chef, much more cheaply than this. What was almost universally lacking was any sauces at all, which of course provide so much flavor, accent the flavors of the food, and are so much work for the chef. My daughter guided, "be sure to take photos of all the great food" as we did at every course at those better restaurants, and not once at Blue Hill did I feel that a dish deserved to be photographed. There was just no beauty, no creativity other than a rustic, farm-table, kind of charm. The wine "pairing" (which they make very clear is not a pairing), should be avoided. It consists of 4 bottles (for our 5 people participating), two whites and two reds, and you fill out an absurd form to guide the sommelier in her selections. The form literally has you pick one choice from insufficient adjectives such as "leather, soil, toast" for red or "straw, grass, barn" for white. I should have chosen my own wines,or better yet, brought my own and paid the $90 corking fee. And while the service was excellent overall, extremely attentive and friendly, the sommelier was stone cold - I actually started to watch her in her interactions with other staff members, who gave her a wide berth when she walked by, clearly instilling fear among the staff. As a minor complaint, I got an email in advance asking me to identify by name all my guests. Since the email was a "do not reply" format, I called the restaurant and got voicemail. I described the email I had received and gave my number for a callback. That call never came, which surprised me as I had expected outstanding customer attention. I truly don't understand the positive ratings for this restaurant. At a modest price point it would have a quirky charm, but at this elevated price level, it cannot begin to compare to quality restaurants.

We would have liked to come early to enjoy the grounds but it was raining. Nonetheless it was an outstanding experience. From the moment they take your car to seating you - you will be pampered. First we were seated by the bar for a cocktail and complimentary drink.

You are then escorted to you table. The dinner takes a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Small plates are presented in themes baed in the vegetable that is being presented ‘farm to table’. Each is presented in a unique and fun way. We were given ‘a bunch of hay and told to ‘find the needles in a haystack’ aka breadsticks.

We were taken on a field trip to the bakery for a discussion on the bread making. Other tables went outside to the grill.

Each table is treated special. Our wait staff was extremely professional yet friendly and answered all our questions.

2 of the 4 of us had the wine pairing. They are quite generous with the wine and keep filling your glass as you drink during that course. Granted it’s not cheap!

The meal although quite expensive is well worth the trip - special occasion location.

One of the very best meals I've ever had. Despite being a very big fan of meat, this meal kept me satisfied and surprised all the way to the end. A standout among fancy restaurants!

This is an iconic place to eat for many reasons. First it is a unique experiment in creating via breeding unique healthy grains and vegetables. Dan Barber and his group fund breeding research and work with an array of plant breeders. Each table gets a different menu. Ours was not a meat-heavy meal but others near us differed with much more meat. Rather, we experienced the most remarkable array of edible flowers, vegetables and sauces, along with a few truly wonderful lmeat dishes( apate and a duck course)and no other animal food courses. We were served 19 minicourses’ every dish was unique, beautifully presented and delicious. The only reminder of classic great normal cuisine was a remarkable, perfectly cooked duck breast maigre with an eggplant and squash Bolognese. The wine list is exceptional not only for its depth but for the fact that you can find high quality in all price ranges. For any lover of great food who is willing to go on an experiment into what future food can be, this is a great place.

While almost laughingly precious, great care is taken in food preparation and presentation. It’s not for a casual evening out- our evening lasted FIVE HOURS, which was two hours too long. I was food-fatigued by hour three. Courses are didactic- meant to highlight and educate about agriculture, cooking process, and research. Menu veered more veggie than five years ago, but great variety meat/fish offered. Also included were local foraging finds. Cocktails inventive and delicious. A unique and unparalleled dining experience in a bucolic setting. Plan to spend longer than you think you will. After a brief lecture on Dan Barber’s effort to breed “the perfect potato”, you may be amused at the choreographed plate placement by the dance troupe of waitstaff, only to find a single baby potato in front of you. Get used to it. There will be twenty more such courses. Waitstaff to diner ratio appears to be 1:1. Not surprisingly, a break-the-bank meal. If you’re a true “foodie” who can afford a visit, it’s a must.

The price- quality ratio is off here. It is interesting and things are good quality but I don't feel like it's better than a typical grea restaurant in NYC so definitely not worth the trip! Also about 3x the price of what I feel like it was with.
Here are some specific complaints :
- Timing was off. At one time we had 3 dishes in front of us which crowded the table, then for the majority of the time we were there we had nothing
- The wine pairing was unfortunately not worth it. At first the wine was plentiful, albeit the same wine over and over. Then at the end it was scarce. I don't know how you can even say it was a wine pairing when you don't have a wine with every course! During the main course we had a small taste, then at dessert we were served literally nothing... So definitely don't get the tasting here, since it isn't actually one. They do have good wine options so you're better off just going by the glass.. Even at the main course we had 1/5 of a glass and nothing else. It's as if they fill you up on the cheaper wines early on to make the food taste better and so you don't think about the skimpiness later.

Overall the place is pretty and the service is good. If you don't have the opportunity to take a vacation out of nyc and you really need to get away and see some pretty small town vibes, it could be a good option. In general though, not worth it.

My husband and I are always looking into the best rated restaurants to try them out. Took a while to get reservations here and finally went last night but it was a bit disappointing. First, beautiful drive, beautiful venue and great service. Loved the concept of farm to table and the vegetables were perfectly presented. However, there was too much drama to the dinner and it was sooo long! From 9:30pm-1am, I was basically falling asleep that I just wanted to leave before the dessert course which was blah. Animal protein was only pheasant and a bit of fish. ( BTW they have a dead pheasant to show customers, creepy). I would suggest to have bread at the beginning not middle of the dinner and more protein selection. Overall food was good but not great.

I was extremely excited about finally getting a reservation at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. I had been to their Manhattan restaurant and had heard this was better. Realistically this is not better and you cannot compare. I recommend you go here in the spring, summer or fall because the grounds are beautiful. I have to commend Dan Barber on focusing purely on quality vegetables and starting the conversation on healthy eating. That said, I think there was too much drama that went along with my dinner. I could have done with less frou frou and drama. The quality of the food was excellent. The vegetables were so delicious and they had so many options for someone like me who is gluten free. One main problem for me was that I had a drink at the bar, they didn't have small snacks to go along with it, then I started with wine during dinner and they were very slow in bringing food and bread that the alcohol really got to me. For the future, I recommend some snacks by the bar and bread as soon as guests are seated. Don't go to the Barns with too much expectation, you could be dissapointed. I will try this restaurant every season just to see the different vegetables in the right season.

From the moment of our arrival onto the property to our departure we were enthralled. The farm setting, the stone barns, the ambience, the thoughtful decor, the service, and the many courses of food surprises. What a beautiful, splendid, and memorable dining experience!

Vegetables, elevated to a status and flavor that will make carnivores cry. Oh yes, the chefs present the local and fresh courses in unique ways that will surprise you, the waiters orchestrate every meal presented to you, foods that will delight abound, wines unique and clever come with the pairing and courses arrive every few minutes until you are overfed and supremely happy. It's a gorgeous setting and worth the hype.

8 people, 4 1/2 hours, 24 courses, approx $500 a person with the wine.
