I wish I could give this 3.5 stars, but I suppose it’s closer to four than three. This spot has a lot of older graves (1800s) and can be walked or driven (though several roads are blocked off). Washington Irving of Sleepy Hollow fame is buried here. A few photo ops. Probably best done in spring or fall.

My group of four took a tour of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery on October 31, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. It was "The Original Knickerbocker: Washington Irving & The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” tour. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and our amusing tour guide, who has a wealth of knowledge about the cemetery. Beautiful grounds that you are free to roam after the tour.

On our last day visiting New York City, we drove an hour north to visit some of the historic sites along the Hudson River. Cemeteries are always interesting for their notables, art and architecture, and landscape, so we thought a visit to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery was in order. Usually they are pretty quiet and serene places to visit, but we had no idea what we were in for, one week before Halloween, when we arrived at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. It was overrun with people attending tours of the cemetery, where Washington Irving, the author of Rip Van Winkle which features the Headless Horseman. We managed to drive deep into the cemetery and found a couple of the sites we came to see: Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, and William Rockefeller. Due to the crowds, we were unable to see Washington Irving or the reconstructed Headless Horseman Bridge or the final resting places of Leona Helmsley, Elizabeth Arden, Samuel Gompers, or Charles Sheeler. If we ever get the change to visit again, we surely will!

I've been wanting to do this tour for a few years now, and finally booked far enough in advance to do it Halloween weekend. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect, but myself and group of 7 friends were pleasantly surprised. Parking and check in were smooth, and our tour guide was engaging, fun, quirky, and she had a treasure trove of information about the cemetery. We definitely want to go back during daylight hours and explore the cemetery some more.

We did the Original Knickerbocker your. The docents was knowledgeable as well as entertaining. I found the history fascinating and the views beautiful. Not recommended for elderly with an unsteady gait as there are hills and uneven ground.

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is located just north of town. It holds the resting place of Washington Irving , Andrew Carnegie, Leona Helmsley , Samuel Gompers and others. you can walk or drive. If you walk leave at least 2 hours or more. Maps are available at the front and are a big help.

Very nice and large. A very large cemetery. Best to take a guided tour. Gravestones are easily marked and maps are available to people

My wife and I greatly valued this unique experience more than any other on our September 10-day East Coast visit! Even before we arrived, I was very appreciative of the service Christina provided me to answer all of my questions pertaining to ticketing and handicap accessibility of the evening cemetery lantern tour. When we arrived for the tour, Christina and her staff were very welcoming and helpful. Throughout the tour, Christina regularly called upon my wife and me to ensure that we could see and hear since my wife is in a wheelchair. My wife and I are from rural Minnesota, and several of our midwest friends and family are quite jealous about our visit to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery!! Thank you Christina and staff of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery - we absolutely loved our time and unique experience in early September!!

A gorgeous setting and lovely walk. We didn’t, honestly, realize the historic figures we’d pass, so that was a pleasant surprise. We did expect to see names from Washington Irving’s story, and that was well-rewarded from the start. The cemetery itself lends a nice backdrop to the story, which I’ll never forget. We made the trek to the Horseman’s bridge (not original) and were surprised to see it was so different from what was in our imaginations. The church on grounds was extraordinarily beautiful. I also really like the balance of referencing the story, but not overly capitalizing on it - if that makes sense. Highly recommend a visit.

Hello - is there a third party site where these tickets are being resold? It appears the evening lantern tour is sold out all October and November 2020. I would love to track down two tickets

No. They don't allow that. They only refund ticket purchases in severe weather. Make sure you have a rain coat umbrella and comfortable shoes

How was your stay at the Double Tree? We are thinking of staying there (seems nice and close). I don't think we will make it up this year, but maybe next year and want to go in October... but as you mentioned, I think it will be packed. I'd love to hear any suggestions you may have! Thx!

Our stay was fantastic. Seeing that we arrived during a hurricane on a Friday night, it was great. The hotel is close enough to stay and drive into Sleepy Hallow. I would highly suggest you book ahead what you want to do, as they probably fill up fast during October, especially the plays. We did the tour of the cemetery on our own b/c it cancelled due to weather...and were glad due to the terrain of the cemetery it would have been hard to walk around (especially after the rain). The internet is your best choice for information before the trip. We didn’t find too many touristy shops in the village of Sleepy Hallow, that was a surprise to us. So, if you see something you want somewhere, I would buy it cause you may not see anything like it again.

Yes. No problem. You can park on the grounds in designated areas. It a hilly terrain.
