The tour of the house by friendly docents in period costume was very interesting. We did an afternoon tour and returned in the evening for the Legend of Sleepy Hollow storytelling event. Very entertaining! The place had a whole different look at night.

Interesting to explore Washington Irving's home - nothing grand here but you got a nice sense of life for the middle class. And it is "down the hill" so you got a nice view of the Hudson. Thanks to COVID & small quarters, you could not go to the 2nd floor but the costumed guides did a nice job in each room.

We saw Irving’s Legend. We try enjoyed the show. The production was well done. The lead actor was entertaining - basically an hour long monologue and he did a fabulous job holding the crowds interest - old and young. All the staff exuded a warm and welcoming environment - including the parking staff and the guy under the canopy standing by to help you register your online tickets. I recommend for anyone. Especially kids.

Fantastic location, interesting place, but remarkably small compared to other home tours of famous people I've been to, but fun to visit nevertheless. We were actually there in the Fall of 2019.

I'm sure this is better when it isn't raining and not during COVID. The staff was super nice and very informative though.

Lovely room newly decorated.
Excellent breakfast with friendly service.
Grounds are worth meandering through with a great cup of coffee from lobby.
A restful,beautiful nook nestled atop a mountain .Well worth the stop.

When visiting Sleepy Hollow to get the full experience one must visit Washington Irving‘s home, Sunnyside. I walked into the room that Irving supposedly wrote the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and looked upon the furniture, not original to the house, with visions of Irving working into the early hours of the morning. Standing in the rooms where Washington Irving entertained guest, I listened to the tour guide describe the fanciful parties that he hosted friends and acquaintances. Washington Irving was a social creature that craved the company of people and whose writings sprang from the Hudson Valley’s folktales and gossip that filled his house on candlelit nights entertaining his guest. It is very easy to recreate these images of the parties and also him slipping off to write a little to escape the atmosphere or catch a few moments of shut eye from days, weeks and months of hosting social gatherings. I saw the room that Irving passed away in with his family and friends along by his side and could image the sober feeling within the house at the time of his passing. I watched a train pass outside between Irvings’ house and the Hudson River. The tracks were placed in his lifetime to spite him rumored by the tour guide. The house was a wonder place to visit and provided a serene setting for Irving to gaze across the Hudson Bay, as he wrote his literature. A definite visit of Washington Irving fans.

I booked the "Home of the Legend" tour on November 2nd. Overall I had a fine experience, but I left wanting more from it.
On the positive note, the guides, dressed in period attire, were delightful. The narrative they offered was clear, interesting, and gave me some insight into Irving's life.
Unfortunately, the tour felt very rushed. My group of seven had to cram into a small viewing area in each room to hear a bit of the story of Irving's life before being shepherded into the next room. I'm not sure I was in the house for more than 30 minutes. I'd love to see the team offer a longer, more in-depth tour. A little outdoor theatre could easily be set up to allow a locaI Irving expert to present more extended commentary on Irving's life to better set the stage for a more thorough home tour. It might also be interesting if Sunnyside offered talks on the historical and/or literary context of Irving's work.

Historic Hudson Valley Organizations delivers superb Halloween events. This year the "Sleepy Hallow Experience" was added to the list of fun events that you can attend. It was a superb storytelling musical delivered on the grounds of Washington Irving's home. The performers, costumes, and staging all were Broadway quality. Imperative to purchase your tickets well in advance (meaning months ahead of time) because this event was quickly sold out even though it was its premier year at Sunnyside.

Really love how the tour guides dress in period costumes, and ours was very informative! We did the house tour and the “spooky walk.” Wouldn’t feel the need to do the spooky walk (literally just a walk through the woods with a storyteller) again but we’d give the house another visit. Very interesting and fun!

When do they reopen for 2021? Site just says closed.
I sure would like to know how to purchase tickets online in advanced so we would be able to go inside Washington Irving's home? Is there a way to do that? Please advise.

Yes, tickets can be purchased online through the historic Hudson valley website. Go to the historic Hudson valley website, whose address can't be posted for some reason, and look for tickets on the right hand side. Click that and then select the date on their calendar that you wish to visit. The drop down menu underneath will list all of the places in historic Hudson valley. Select Sunnyside and it will bring you to a list of times they have available that day, proceed from there. Enjoy!

Hi Samantha, There is limited access to the grounds without a ticket. You really can't get much further than the parking lot and the walk to the office. Lyndhurst on the other hand, right next door allows full access to the grounds and views of the river. The only ticketed access there is getting into the house.
Sunnyside was worth the admission though. I hope this response isn't too late. I'm not sure about online tickets, check their website or the Tarry Town visitor's center.
