The Castlemaine - Maldon railside trail is a mountain bike or "hybrid" bike suitable trail. It's quite hilly with a gravel / dirt / rocky surface. It's not hardcore mountain biking and suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness who want a nice ride from Castlemaine to Maldon return. There are lots of tracks and trails in the area and the route to follow is well signposted, but do keep an eye out for the signs as it's possible to take a wrong turn! It's possible to ride one-way and bring your bike back on the steam train, however I'd check what trains are running and if there is a suitable guards van for bikes with the VGR train company in advance. I've cycled both ways on many occasions and thoroughly enjoyed it. Note that on total fire ban days the trail is closed. It's also suitable for walkers who want a longer walk.

If you haven’t enjoyed the experience of a steam locomotive or as the Indians in America called them “The Iron Horse”’ then don’t let this opportunity pass you by if and when you are In Maldon.
Turn back the clock and listen to the chugging of the train and that whistle blowing. Relax and enjoy the views.

We had our yearly reunion in castlemaine and decided to ride the Castlemaine to Maldon trail.It is a great ride 18.8km long - one way-you do have to watch as it is a gravel trail and there is lots of tree debri to navigate but it is all worth it when you get to the lovely town of Maldon

This is a cycling and walking trail, mostly next to the tourist railway line with steam locomotives. To get to the start of this trail From Castlemaine CBD, you first need to go on the Campbell’s Creek trail. The Campbell’s creek trail starts across the road from the Showgrounds in Camp Reserve on Forest Road. This trail meets the Castlemaine to Maldon trail just after it goes under the Pyrenees Highway bridge.
Signage is mostly good except where the trail crosses the Pyrenees highway a second time. After crossing Pyrennes Highway turn left along the footpath until it gets to Ireland St. The trail continues at the end of Ireland St.
At the Maldon end, follow the sign to the Beehive mine and this will take you close to the centre of town.
The trail is 21km each way, and fairly bumpy and moderately steep in places. It follows the railway is some places and diverts through quiet back roads in the Muckleford and Maldon bushland reserves. There is a diversion along Sawmill Road, another quiet back road about 5km from Maldon.
A mountain bike would be best for riding this track, but a hybrid will just do it. There is not much cover, and I would not advise riding this track in the middle of a hot day in summer. The trail is closed on total fire ban days. It is perfect for riding in cool weather or the morning or evening.
Take you own water. There is none available on the trail.

It’s a great way to spend time while in Castlemaine, when you get to Malden it is a beautiful old mining town. With lovely old shops to browse

Easy ride on mostly dirt roads close to the train line, no significant hills to tackle, have a beer at Maldon and head back to Castlemaine :)

What an incredible experience. Steam train rolling through the countryside, Beer tastings from the local breweries, enjoyable lunch at the Kangaroo hotel. Relaxing trip back to Castlemaine. Such a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

traveled Castlemaine to Maldon and return on a beautiful sunny day. I also spent time in the locomotive riding on the foot plate. The two guys Paul, yes both were named Paul, made me feel welcome at answered my questions.
Station staff and the Conductor, David Bull, were welcoming, friendly and informative.
Enjoyed a cold beer on the ride back to Castelemaine.

Excellent experience on an excellent train ride and te waiter/steward/attendant who looked after the Buffet Class in First Class was very friendly and informative and gave us a lot of information about local sights and events. He was a very dedicated volunteer. The railway is a Not for Profit run by volunteers and worthy of any gifts and donations sent their way.

My husband and I rode this trail on Good Friday. We started in Castlemaine and rode to Maldon and then back again. Going to Maldon is a bit more difficult because it is mainly up hill,but we have only been riding a few months and we both managed it. It is a bit rough, but we managed ok on hybrids. The beginning of the trail in Castlemaine was a bit difficult to find. It does not start at the station and we ended up on some other trail for a while, but we got there in the end. A great day. A must do if you like to ride.
