Easy Walk

We enjoyed exploring the Goldfields Track on the outskirts of Castlemaine. The track was well signposted and using the All Trails app was very helpful. The track is well formed and could be muddy in wet periods. A moderate level of fitness is suggested for this activity.

Goldfields track by bike

I cycled Castlemaine to Vaughan springs and back on a cool day In November. A 40km round trip which took 7 hours. It was fairly tough going and the track was very steep, rocky and eroded in places. You need a mountain bike and you will be pushing or carrying it in places. There are a couple of places you need to ride on a road with cars - for about 1km near Fryerstown and again at Vaughan springs. It was worth the effort - there is plenty to see and you get a great insight into the history of the mining in the area and get to see the damage it caused. Good idea to get the Goldfields track walk or ride guide. This has detailed maps and information about the history of the sites.

We did a walk along part of this - good for outback scenes

Enjoyed our walk along part of the track, we found a circular one someone else had done online that passed near chewton. The paths were wide and easy to walk, good scenery and we spotted some kangaroos which were a real highlight.

Enjoyed very much for one day but think that would get a bit repetitive if you did more than one day as the scenery doesn't really change.

It was hot and few amenities so take food and plenty of water also hat and sunscreen as very little shade.

You can also cycle round here and relatively flat so think perfectly doable.
