The food was excellent, service was great. It was St Patrick's day and there was a lot of customers to serve, which was delivered with ease. Steak was excellent and vegetables wonderful. Can't speak more highly of the staff, they were great. Carlton draft went down well.

Visited Castlemaine on a weekend in May. Looked around different areas noticed a lot of dog crap everywhere and a lot near the railway underpass. I think this place has never been cleaned horrible and filthy. Castlemaine wake up not a good look.

There are historic trains run from Castlemaine but you should check when they are available as its generally only weekends and some weekdays. You may catch a sight of one of the Loco's though.

Castlemaine is the last train stop before Bendigo, the station is used every day. The station is built of red brick, it hasn't changed much since it began operating in 1862. Catlemaine is a popular tourist destination, it's well worth a day trip. The station is a monument to the age of steam.

I visited Castlemaine station with my brother and father (Trip Advisor, please fix the ‘family’ option to include just ‘family’) as part of our trip on the Victorian Goldfields Railway. Platform #3 is used for train trips for the latter on Wednesdays and Sundays.
What I like about Castlemaine station is that it’s not just a platform (+/- a toilet and vending machine[s]) to board and disembark from trains. Like the rest of the town, it has a strong sense of history about it which becomes obvious the moment you arrive in the carpark; at the entrance, there’s a World War 1 German machine gun captured by Allied forces. While the platforms have modern toilets and kiosk facilities, they’ve maintained the historical facade. Between that and the VGR trains, I couldn’t help but envisage the train scenes from Ingalls Wilder’s ‘By the Shores of Silver Lake’ or ‘Miss Potter’ complete with passengers in period costume.

This station oozes historical appeal... it was opened in 1862 and I am quite certain that if it could speak... it could tell us some really interesting stories... about the staff and the trains... the travelling folk. There was a time that Castlemaine station had three passenger platforms, an interlocked yard with two signal boxes, and extensive goods' facilities together with a locomotive sub-depot located at the northern end of the yard.
These days you can still catch trains to Melbourne and to Bendigo and Swan Hill... and of course coaches to various locations. There is an amazing little kiosk at the station as well. The gentleman working at the kiosk is delightful and has been there longer than the currrent V/Line staff... James is a delight to meet and quite well known to the locals. But James has a secret...he was also an actor in 10 movies I believe. The extent of his acting career isn't known to me, but it adds to his already abundant charm.
There are oodles of reasons to visit Castlemaine, so this is just another to add to your list... it is a really impressive piece of railway history.

Castlemaine Railway Station opened in October 1862. It is built of red brick and hasn't changed much since the early Victorian era. The station is in Kennedy Street, walking distance to the centre of this small city. You can board the Victorian Gold Fields Railway to Maldon here; it's a steam train that remains well-patronised. Check for departure times.By the way, the V-Line regional train service is a convenient way to travel to Castlemaine.

Both Queen Elizabeth II and AB Facey (of A Fortunate Life fame) have passed through here, what more could you want from a country town station? The waiting room is cosy in winter, far cosier I imagine than when passengers of the 1800's bound for the big smoke huddled around a coal fired stove. Staff always helpful, a good coffee outlet and clean toilets. On Wednesdays and weekends the Goldfields Railway mob run heir steam trains our of here too, so that's a treat.

The station building is old and historic, but there is more to it. On the island platform there is an ancient signal box and Platform 3 hosts the Victorian Goldfields Railway with return excursions to Maldon on Wednesdays and Sundays plus some Saturdays. The service to Melbourne approximates an hourly frequency on Vlocity trains and the journey is short enough to encourage commuters to live here. there is a handy cafe on the station as well.

I think that you mean Maldon. The train runs several times a day. I suggest that you ask VLine regarding pets. By the way, I assume your pet is a dog.
