There were some fine paintings there by Tom Roberts, McCubbin, Streeton, Jeffrey Smart and Leonard French. A couple of dining chairs designed by Walter Burley Griffin were illuminating.

This building is custodian to some amazing pieces of Australian Art. The Art Deco building was founded in 1913, but was built in 1931. The building is heritage listed by the National Trust.
I had the most remarkable gentleman show me around, explaining the significance of the art in each room before leaving me to my own devices to look around. His knowledge of the nearby historic buildings was also amazing.
Left to my own devices I made my way through the rooms looking at Indonesian Art , Dja Dja Wurrung photographs and historical pieces, modern art and everything in between. There is more in the basement - there is an area that gives you a full background to the local area that you can lose time in.
I would say this should be on your must visit list if you are remotely interested in Art and History. But if you are not interested in either, then perhaps it's time to branch out and try something different. There is no time in life that we should stop exploring and going outside our comfort zones. :)

The second visit to what is an excellent Regional Art Gallery and Museum. The museum contains very interesting and collections that are useful for understanding how Castlemaine came into being, how it was shaped by the early Settlers and the energy and innovation they showed. There is an outstandingly good collection of silverware. Upstairs a very interesting solo exhibit was under way by a textile artist.

We found this by chance and so glad we did. It’s a gem of a gallery and museum with plenty to see. There are rooms with different themed exhibitions, a museum down stairs and we lucked in with an artist in residence who asked for our thoughts related to her research. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend this for anyone.

The Castlemaine Art Museum holds a small but interesting selection of art, including some very well-known Australian artists. From Brack to Bunny, McCubbin and Streeton, it's a great cross-section of Australian art. It's a compact building so you don't need to spend a lot of time there in order to view everything that's on display. Very centrally located (between the station and the main streets), well worth a visit.

A delight to visit often, annual portrait prize display is excellent. The basement historical display about Castlemaine gold rush is also fascinating.

I visited on 15 December on the recommendation of a friend to view ‘The Unquiet Landscape’ curated by Jenny Long, assisted by art donors. Each art work was captioned with quotes from Kangaroo by DH Lawrence. The most imaginative exhibition I have seen in years. favourites of mine by Clarice Beckett (1887-1935) such as ‘Wet Evening’ ‘Near Beaumaris’ & ‘Boatshed Beaumaris’ were seen in a new light when reading the text. Just brilliant.

This gallery was saved from closing which is so important. Not only are there some fantastic Clarice Beckett paintings but the collection is quite good. We saw some fabulous ceramics the day we visited. And there is also an interesting historical section downstairs. Really worth a visit!

2 in 1. The upstairs Art gallery and the downstairs Museum are both free and can easily fit into a visit to Castlemaine esp with children and if you need an activity to escape hot/cold/wet weather highly recommended. The staff are very friendly, helpful and welcoming.

We really enjoyed our visit to this Art Museum. A very interesting collection of Australian art and also pottery. Also just a very beautiful building.
