This memorial clearly states it was paid for by subscription... but what did that mean?Well it was put out as a competition - the structure to cost about £150.
The monument commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action in the South African War, which was unveiled on the 30th May 1903 by Lieutenant-Colonel McCay MP. It lists those who were killed in action on it's side.
This obelisk of Harcourt granite is on the hill in Mostyn-street, between the English and Presbyterian Churches. Whilst you are in the area, it's worth taking a few minutes to stop to look at it.

The Boer War, also known as the South African War, was fought from 1899 to 1902 between the forces of the British Empire and farmers of mainly Dutch origin, known as Boers. The memorial commemorates three local men who did not return. Australians, who were accomplished horsemen and bushmen, were valued soldiers who fought for the first time as citizens of their new nation, The Boer War is almost forgotten, it was a nasty little war. We should not forget those who served.

Castlemaine Boer War Memorial was resurrected in 1903 to pay tribute to three men killed whilst serving in the Boer War; the latter being the first conflict Australia was involved in as a nation. It has some beautifully sculpted lions but otherwise free of ornament or decoration. Given that the 3 men it pays tribute to were Privates and Corporals (usually the lower ranks attracted men from the working class) I’d like to think the simplicity of the memorial is fitting for these troops. Ie. Men who went about their lives, got on with things and had modest ‘no fuss’ lifestyles.

The Boers were South African farmers of Dutch descent who wanted to break away from the British Empire. The Boers invented the word and concept of "commando." They were tough opponents. The Australian troops were mainly bushmen, who could ride and live rough. This memorial commemorates three local men who did not return.

It is a bit obscured by the cars parked next to it, but it does have some interesting images (Lion, etc) and some stories about those who went away.

The Boer War, then called the South African War, was the first war Australia fought as a nation. Many memorials were erected to the fallen, but few as handsome as this memoral in Castlemaine, which records the names of local men killed in action. The memorial was erected in 1903, when the war was fresh in the minds of the Australian people. The Boer War was not a happy one for the British Empire. The determined Boers -- Dutch for farmers -- proved to be a tough nut to crack, even for a mighty ermpire.

Australia went to war as a nation for the first time in South Africa, a conflict we now know as the Boer War. The Boer War was a cruel conflict, almost every Australian country town has a memorial to this war. At the time, the Boer War was known as the South African War. The British Empire went to war against the Boers, who were of farmers of Dutch descent. They wished to secede from the .British Empire. "Boer" in Dutch means "farmer." This obelisk is a handsome structure, it commemorates three local men who were killed in action (KIA) in South Africa. The obelisk was unveiled in 1903. Although the Australlan States had sent troops to previous conflicts, this was the first time that Australia went to war as a nation.
