This building demonstrates the rapid growth of a principal gold mining centre during the 1870s, with the establishment of permanent infrastructure reflecting expectations for permanent settlement of the gold mining towns.
When constructed the building was used as the post and telegraph office, water-supply office and survey office, as well as providing a residence for the post office manager. The building retains its function as the principal post office for Castlemaine and is substantially intact.
Like many of the buildings in Castlemaine, you can't but help be impressed by it's prominence on the corner of a major street. The streetscape in this town is like many others in the area, except on a grander scale.

The historic Post Office in Castlemaine is part of a great heritage walk from the boom time of the gold rush here.It dates back to about 1875 and is an impressive two storey building in a renaissance classicism style (16th century). There is a clock tower to impress further. I found the design was very like the Elizabeth Street Post Office in Melbourne.
