Love to grab lunch from Super Hero or Johnny Baker and take a stroll amongst one of the oldest gardens in the state. Great friendly vibe, and magnificent old trees. Perfect place to keep cool on a hot day and wonderful Autumn display.

Great place for family or couples, amazing lake and birds and a great walking or cycling track about 1.7 km circle. BBQ facilities available as is a great children's playground. Aged trees provide ample shade

Enjoyed the gardens having our lunch there. Was impressed how big it was and so peaceful. Nearby the caravan park and other interesting sites.

Loved walking through the peaceful gardens, around Joanna Lake and through the rose gardens. Very very pretty.

Large Botanic Gardens on the edge of the town. PLenty of space for a walk on a good day. Parking at the edge.

Nice green spot, with playground, a lake, and good walks. Not particularly well kept, but still worth a visit

My wife and I were fortunate to be staying at the Castlemaine Gardens Big 4 Holiday Park abutting the Botanic Gardens. So for the 3 days we were there we took every opportunity to walk in and around the gardens. The Botanic Gardens is located on the north side of Castlemaine near The Mill and Railway Station.
The lawns and gardens on the southern end are beautifully manicured with the northern end needing a bit more attention. I suspect the southern end gets the majority of work as it is the end closer to the CBD. There is lake on the southern end which has a variety of ducks and other aquatic birds happily swimming in it. The gardens have a children's playground in the centre, multiple electric barbeques and shelters/rotundas to keep you out of inclement weather. If you're a fitness fanatic, the granitic sand path surrounding the path is flat and 1.7Km in length. Perfect for a run. Also look out for the kookaburras which are plentiful.
Overall a very nice park with different species of trees and plants. Well worth a visit.

The most attractive feature of the Castlemain Botanical Gardens are the mature European trees. They have shed their golden leaves and now, with Spring in the air, the new buds will appear. The green shoots will bring life to these old trees, it's a great time to observe the new life in this old garden.

Walking through the Botanical Gardens in Castlemaine in Autumn is so stunning... the leaves lay before you like a colourful tapestry. The air is crisp... the crumpling leaves rustle under your footwear like nature's song.
You breath in ... and out... and stop and listen to the whispering of the falling petiole bearing their life-force ... it's really magical. Swirling golden leaves fall around you inviting you to share their secrets... offering their moment in the circle of life.
So reflective of life...we shine, we shimmer for our season on the tree of life, before slowing changing our colours- no less beautiful than the green...but with age comes that brown and gold... and then it's time to fall slowly and return to earth.

We took a walk around the Botanical Gardens before going to The Mill which is right opposite.

I noticed that there were four areas that looked as though they were being aerated. Would you kindly tell me what this is for thank you. Cheers orlena Charleston

The usual reason for aeration is to creates holes down through the often compacted upper soil layer (roughly 6-13mm) so air, water and nutrients can reach grass roots and encourage new growth. I was in Castlemaine in late March and it was very dry, I'm uncertain as to what rain they may have had since then but they may be expecting some, hence the aeration. If you Google "Botanical Gardens Health" you might find that more specific information is available.
Do i need to make any prior booking before visiting the garden?

Not at all. It is free and open to the Public. Beautiful walk around the Gardens, even a Lake is there. Enjoy!! Regards - Nancy.
