Historic building refurbished with relaxed sofas and side-tables for movie-watching. An eclectic range of good movies old and newer. The foyer and bar are stylish and welcoming, the service quick, the mulled wine very nice, and the genuine gelato an excellent choice. Our movie was set in Scotland and in English, but many are with subtitles so it's worth checking the program if that is relevant. The bar and restaurant are open from 4 pm, we had a 5pm movie but sadly the chef was on annual leave so just drinks and gelato this time.

New pasta menu is very disappointing. Scant sauce and flavourless. Bring back the pizzas which were a hit with diners. Wines are pricey. They also removed their espresso machine and no longer serving coffee. A cafe without coffee? Go figure! Seems like a downhill trajectory for this dining establishment and won't be going there again until they come to their senses and improve food and drinks.

Went to hear some live music on Good Friday. Great atmosphere outside in the beer garden. Great venue to hear live music and very reasonable entry fee. Highly recommend

Tonight my partner and I ordered takeaway pizza from Castlemaine's Theatre Royal pizzeria. The pizzas had been recommended by friends who have eaten at the venue a few times. They gave it a good wrap up so we decided to go lazy for dinner and ordered take away. The ordering system seemed very efficient but it clearly isn't. The pizzas were brought home, but when we opened the boxes mine was securely stuck to the bottom, luke warm and extremely limp, obviously steamed from being in the box too long. It did appear to have been cooked at the right temperature and it looked like an excellent pizza. Getting it out was like detaching a half cooked pancake. Had it been eaten straight from the oven it would obviously have been good but it had been cooked too early before our chosen pick up time and sat steaming in the box in which it was enclosed. Pizza must be above all crisp. I'd eat in at this venue and gladly have pizza again, but this was the first and last time for take away. I'm a food obsessed cook of many years and have always believed food should be chosen, cooked and presented with respect (even if its just toast!!) and if its not the venue sends a message about its attitude to both product and client. I thought I was on a winner here and the Royal's is likely by far the best pizza in town. Just don't go down the take away path. Excellent score for food quality, total failure on take away system.

A unique venue in historic building. Great cafe in the front serving up delicious pizza & a awesom beer garden. The drink, food, sound, space, outdoor area...all exceptionally. Worth traveling to see a show here. We seen Child and it was amazing, such a great vibe.

We had pizza and a drink - the service was great and really nice pizzas. Wide range of wines and beers. It was an interesting space with a good vibe: worth a visit for a meal

The Theatre Royal can be used for a variety of functions, including cinema and live performaces. It is a great asset to Castlemaine. The Theatre dates backc to the 19th century, it is quite opuleent.

Went to see Cosmic psychos and Mr Teenage. Great place to see bands although limited alcoholic drinks selection and seating inside band area but did have nice beer garden. Cafe was also good.

The cinamas are a great place to go to hang out with friends and families and the treats they sell are delicious. Great food to eat when watching movies and when you go out for lunch and dinner!

Never write reviews, much less negative ones (we are all trying to make a living...) BUT so cross & sad our local Castlemaine cinema has gone from bad to worse - after a blossoming following recent new management, critical new partner departures leave inexperienced sour incompetent operators who have lost custom in the restaurant (don’t bother now!) & perpetuate a bad attitude to customers. Tonight we went to see “Pavarotti” screening previously advertised last month but since replaced with only offensive denials from remaining manager person - really! In a small town, no wonder the F&B offerings are empty these days & patrons thin on the ground (& prior partners gone...). Pity...(!)

When bands are playing is there a standing/dancing area in front of the stage and does a general entry ticket admit to this area?

General ticket will allow entry I don't remember specific room to dance but it's a big space I couldn't see why not
