Large memorial to the explorers famous for opening up the Australian Interior. Set on a high point near the town.

The Burke and Wills memorial looks out over Castlemaine from a small hill, which gives a good outlook over the town. The Burke and Wills expedition still arouses emotions, especially among Victorians, Both Burke and Will perished in the desert on their return from the Gulf of Carpentaria,

I was looking for the anticlinal fold rock in town and as I turned into the street I saw what I thought was a spire on the hill, so after looking at the fold... I headed towards it. I laughed when I realised where I had driven. Two years earlier I had sought this memorial out with my father and ended up in the street below it and had to walk up some stairs. The reason I laughed recently is because I thought this was difficult at the time for people with mobility issues to access. What I realised quite by accident during this visit is that you can drive right up next to it, making it accessible to anyone.
It is quite eye-catching because of it's height and they have put this at the top of a hill. So the views of the town from here are very good.
The history of this memorial is really interesting-
Castlemaine was the first town to decide to build a monument. Initially they wanted to bury Burke at the Castlemaine cemetery.
By May 1862, the citizens of Castlemaine had raised £450 for a memorial from public subscription and donations and on the anniversary of Burke's death, 1 July 1862, a public holiday was declared. A procession of over 2,000, including John King, John Macadam and Frederick Standish, marched from town to a hill to the east of town where a ceremony was performed and a foundation stone laid by the Sheriff of Castlemaine, Richard Colles.
The granite obelisk was completed in July 1863, but not before the workers of Castlemaine and Fryers Creek had threatened to erect a taller monument commemorating Charlie Gray, if Gray's name was not included on the original memorial.

Great views of Castlemaine from the memorial. This is one of Australia’s epic expeditions. Somewhat unprepared for what they were to encounter, they almost made it. The story is full of courage and folly. It also shows the desire of colonies to out do each other as this was seen as a Victorian enterprise. The memorial was also funded by public subscription. Both would be unlikely today - different times.

In town for a day &, let's face it, there is not much to do. Some nice buildings (good), the botanical gardens (blah), The Mill (ordinary), the anticlinal (yawn), and the Bourke & Wills memorial. I have seen a few of these & have visited The Dig Tree much further north where they perished. Needs much more information re the journey but the whole trip was very poorly executed so not sure about all the monuments here or around the country. Has a reasonable view over the town but becoming obscured by trees. Really not a memorable experience.

Great view of castlemaine from the monument. Can drive right up to it or park in the carpark below for a picture and then walk the steep climb up to the monument. The only thing lacking was lack of information about Burke and Wills at this site.

A great view of the town. We visited both in the morning and afternoon. More information regarding Burke and Wills would have been good for overseas visitors - perhaps a link to a website for those who are interested??

Good bit of history, easy to find, great view of the town from the site. don't have to get out of the car to read the plaques

The map of Australia showing the route taken. What brave men to under take this expedition. The Tor is a magnificent monument. I think there is a film of the trip, I’m going to watch it.
