Beautiful barrier island close to Swansboro, NC. Very secluded and uncrowded. There is a bathhouse and a snack bar open during the summer. The island is reachable by a small ferry from May to September.

We are visiting all 40+ NC state parks and this is so far, one of our favorites. Mid-week summer day was H O T of course but still amazing. The park office and ferries were staffed with very friendly folks. Ferry ticketing was priced fair and an easy process. Trails on the mainland looked great but we skipped due to heat this time. The ferry ride was so beautiful. Next, you walk .5 miles to the beach then as far along the shore as you wish. To those that say this is “just a beach”, you are not wrong. Bear Island’s beach is very similar to every other beach in the Carolinas. We didn’t find the shelling to be good at all this day but as with any beach, some days are better than others. Too many factors. We walked and walked. So few people which was amazing. We don’t camp but it seems like an interesting concept to camp here. Overall, this was an excellent day spent exploring and we highly recommend Hammocks Beach State Park and Bear Island!! The only improvement we would have appreciated was a stocked gift shop. There were no T-shirts on the rack and we would have purchased a souvenir had they been available.

You will not be disappointed! Wonderful trails, bring lunch and sit and enjoy the water views! You can rent kayaks and take the ferry to Bear Island in the spring and summer.

First time. Kayaked out in about 50 minutes, white/orange markers along the 2.5 mile waterway will direct you. Unfortunately low tide arrived and we had to walk/drag kayak on the way back quite a few times, but sandy bottom it was an easy drag, but still took us about 90 minutes for return trip. Unaware where deepest part of channel was. Four mile long island and we were only visitors. Tons of big shells and sand dollars. No facilities in the winter.

From the time that I arrived around 330 I think I only saw a dozen people total… Not including the staff at the concession stand. It was end of season, so the snacks were half price. The frozen coconut cream bars were incredible! I had my dog with me along with our wagon full of things he may need… Courtesy of Pogie’s water taxi (no dogs allowed on the ferry, and my dog is me ESA companion and best friend). The hike down the path to get to the beach and campsites was a long haul, but not unmanageable. I was dragging probably 60 pounds worth of stuff in a wagon. Was it tough? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. Dragging that wagon over the dunes and through thick sand was bruiutal, but I was comforted knowing I had anything that my dog or I could possibly need. I do not recommend doing this solo like I did, lol. There were many times where I felt like I had an entire island to myself, and I can’t imagine where else I would ever experience this. I stayed in campsite #1, and so glad I chose that one, with all the stuff I was hauling. If you want beach and primitive experience wrapped up in one, this is the place. It was a great experience.

If you rented a house one block from the beach, don’t waste your time or money. It’s just a beach, which happens to still be the Atlantic Ocean…the same ocean across from the house that you most likely rented.

$2 entry and worth it. Sand has some sharp shells and there are rocks out about 100 feet in the water. The waves are big and the beach is clean.

Taking a ferry to bear island is a treat in itself. If you're looking for a clean beach that's not crowded then come check out Hammocks Beach State Park. The park is rich with history too.

This was such a great find and have been telling everyone about this. It is a hidden treasure. We parked in the state park, took a ferry ride to Bear Island. The ocean breeze on the ride is amazing. The ferry drops off and then you need to walk a mile to the beach. Plan your trip accordingly- take kids in the stroller or get a cart to carry your belongings. The sand is white, the sea bed is flat up until 50-60 feet. The beaches in Wilmington/Myrtle beach have a slope and have tons of sediments when waves hit and kid of poke the skin. The water in the beach is clear and no sediment at all.. The beach is FANTASTIC and the best part is the crowd( little to none at all). There are some interesting exhibits at the main office as well.
What I liked:
- Ferry ride
- Less crowd
- Flat beach
- Absolutely clear water and no poky sediments
-Clean restroom and adequate showers.
-Amazing sand dunes and white sand
Tips:
Bring a plastic bag to carry your trash bag.
If kids are young, bring a stroller and/or cart to carry your items .Its a mile walk from ferry junction and can be tiring on hot days.

I’ve been to many NC beaches but Bear Island has got to be the most beautiful. What a gorgeous spot, incredibly tranquil and the picnic spots were wonderful. The ferry ride over was very nice, just a short 15 min ride (no cars, people only). So glad we had the chance to visit!

How do you get there in September? We had plans to go Monday - Tuesday but ferries only operate on Wednesday’s?
Đã viết vào 4 tháng 9, 2018
You will need to hire a private boat service to take you over.

Hi
Yes the schedule changes in September so you can't get there via the ferry on Monday and Tuesdays. The ferries doe operation on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
However, if you are adventuresome you could always kayak out on a Monday or Tuesday!

Is the cost for the farry round trip or is it$5 each way?
Đã viết vào 22 tháng 7, 2018
It is round trip, they take your ticket at the dock. You have no ticket for return, but there is only the one ferry service. They come back every half hour to get people off the island. Basically if you are on the island then you are allowed on the ferry. On the hour is the large boat, on the half hour is the small boat during the week. I think weekends had slightly different times.

Do the lifeguards offer umbrella rentals on Bear Island? I understand there is a good walk to the beach so I’d like to pack lightly and with three kids in tow, I’d love shade during our trip
Đã viết vào 20 tháng 6, 2018
No, there is no services on the island other than a snack bar and restrooms. I saw some people with rolling suitcases which was a very smart way to bring everything without carrying it!
Remember "what you bring you take back leaving only your footprints!" :)

Can you purchase ferry tickets in advance?
Đã viết vào 9 tháng 4, 2018
I don’t know, but can’t believe it would a problem; this is a pretty relaxed place.

When you say get there early to buy tickets but the first boat doesn't leave until 9:30, how early do you mean? Is 9 am, 9 15 ok?
Đã viết vào 10 tháng 8, 2017
yes that's plenty of time ..They go to Bear Island .On island there is camping places where you can stay the night in your tent but there is no stores or anything like that it's empty island

How strict is the park about campfires? Has anyone made a fire and had an issue or made one and not had an issue? Can't imagine camping without even a small contained fire.
Đã viết vào 29 tháng 5, 2017
Small campfires are permitted. But firewood may be hard to come by on the island.
