Always a pleasure to visit the New Forest. Such history, views of nature and wonderful villages.
Lyndhurst and Burley stand out for sure.
Take a cycle tour or just have a drive around avoiding the wild ponies and horses of course.

It was a nice day out, there was lots of sightseeing to do, lots of woods, cows and about 1 or 2 cafes here and there. I came with my dog and he certainly loved it.

When first entering the forest it is an amazing place and so beautiful and serene.
We spent a day and a half exploring and saw horses/ponies cows, pigs and donkeys all grazing freely and unfenced. Unfortunately, there were no deer present at the viewing platform.
There are lots of roads crisscrossing the forest and we mainly kept off the main roads.

My family and I have been visiting the New Forest for decades now. We regularly walk through and do 10 - 20 miles throughout the interior stopping off at various points for a bite to eat. You can really lose yourself out there and destress. There are plenty of well-marked and maintained cycle tracks that will get you around the forest. Alternatively, if you want to steer clear of people and have the whole place to yourself by an OS map, there are many interlocking tracks and routes you can follow where you will be your own company.
Seasonally you will see different wildlife, Pigs in the autumn, and deer all year round but during mating season, the big and young bucks will be out.
There are lots of little places to visit and walk to, if you are visiting i would recommend doing some research into what's around, some historic landmarks you can only find through a grid ref. I also recommend checking your route against the weather, there is a lot of low-mash land across the New Forest and while its not impassable, you will get wet.

I’ve heard so many good words about the New Forest and it’s true. There are plenty of parking spaces regardless of which way you enter. There are many small picturesque villages with great eateries dotted around. There are a lot of animals roaming the park from horse, cows, donkeys etc. they are owned but are allowed to roam the forest. They always seem to know where to go. Please be mindful and not speed through the forest as animals are not predictable. Some areas of the forest are very wet and boggy, please enjoy the nature safely.

It was lovely to see all the animals , but for the price you pay we expected maybe more animals than empty cages. If this like an animal sanctuary they need to do more for the animals, the kids was a big disappointed not seeing some of the rare animals that was written on the plague. Overall it was a good day out

Fabulous, extensive and stunning. Work off the cakes and bakes by cycling, walking and wildlife watching in this ancient area.

After watching a programme on television in 2021, I had wanted to come & visit The New Forest for so long and now I have. It did not disappoint, a natural beauty, such a peaceful place, wild animals roaming free. It almost reminds you of going back in time. I would definitely recommend visiting and would love to return myself someday and spend more time there.

We were staying in a hotel local and woke up early around 5am and decided to get up and go for an early morning drive through the national park.
It was absolutely beautiful. We saw lots of the ponies, donkeys and cows and stopped a couple of times to just sit and watch.
We spent about two hours around the national park and as time was getting on the more cars were about and a couple were getting cross with our careful driving and zoomed around the horses in the road to get to where they are going, some people just dont appreciate and respect what is around them unfortunately.
Beautiful place,

''Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints''
I'm writing this more from the viewpoint of a local rather that a
of a tourist.
FIRST UP
The New Forest District Council seemed to think the New Forest National Park doesn't need any Information Centres....so there aren't any. According to the NFDC everyone has access to the internet via eletronic devices and can look up their own information...how very short-sighted and arrogant.
Thankfully there are Information Points, the main one being at St Barbe's Museum in Lymington run by helpful volunteers.
QUICK BIT OF HISTORY
The iconic 1000+ year old New Forest, becoming a National Park in 1993, is home to native New Forest ponies, donkies, cattle, wildlife, rare birds etc. The NF ponies are wild but are owned by commoners.
MY OWN THOUGHTS
In comparison to the Lake District and other National Parks, the NF is not beautiful in the sense of lush greeness or spectacular views. It is flat but but at certain parts of the year or time of the day it can be quite atmospheric with the colour of heather spiking out from the dull undertones of the background or the mist enveloping the ground.
Something for everyone with expanses of heathland, enclosures, rivers and streams to swim in, open spaces, coastline, towns and villages, shops, art galleries and museums - notably The Motor Museum in Beaulieu.
Marked walking and cycle routes will hopeful encourage visitors to keep to the designated paths and prevent lasting damage to the forest.
Keep reading......(espicially if you've never visited and planning on doing so) 😊
The reality of this place is quite different to what a search engine enquiry will bring up or that of stunning photographs.
OVERTOURISM
Parts of the New Forest has seen a lot of damage done by the influx of cars/caravans, espicially the verges. People parking infront of forest gates because there is nowhere else to park. These have to be kept clear for emergencies and emergency services...please stick to the carparks (they are free).
Hatchet Pond carpark, near to Beaulieu, was recently been moved back from the pond due to damage done by too many visitors.
Ponies, that reside in the forest, have learnt humans equals food and has resulted in ponies kicking out when they can't get the food
There are dedicated picnic sites where animals can't get to. Please use them. Purposefully feeding the animals will land you with a £1000 fine.
(Sadly some of these ponies will have be taken off by their owners).
ENTITLEMENT
People/families seem to think the NF is an extension of their living room. Bringing picnics, tables and chairs, inflatable toys etc to rivers and open spaces. Quite a few leave their rubish behind causing a choking hazard to animals and wildlife...please take it with you.
The New Forest is not a themepark or petting zoo. Parents putting their children on ponies or donkies for photographs and encouraging them to stroke them has resulted in ponies kicking out and in some cases causing injuries....Would you pet a lion on a saferi trip?.....didn't think so
***STRICTLY NO BBQS***
This applies to beaches, heathland, moorland etc both here and in Dorset.
(Local campaigning has seen a majority of shops banning the sale of disposable bbqs).
FOREST ROADS
There is a 40 mph blanket speed across the forest, 30 mph in the villages. This sadly doesn't prevent the deaths of ponies/donkies/cattle and sheep (sheep tend to be out in the north of the forest).
Drive with caution, espicially when it's dusk or dark and slow down when there are animals in the road or near the road.
*It is a legal requiment to telephone the police to let them know if you've hit or killed a pony, donkey or cow*
Come and enjoy the New Forest and everything it has to offer. Use your commonsense and be respectful and abide by the Countryside Code.
BTW...dogs must be kept on leads at all times.

How do I get into The New Forrest by car from Alton please
Đã viết vào 19 tháng 1, 2023
Hi
I’m trying to find a town/village in the New Forest that has enough there for a two night stay for a couple. I’m wanting to stay a rural as possible but within walking distance of somewhere with enough pub/restaurant.
Thanks Sam

Hi, as a resident I can tell you it is open

Have you any suggestions of an inexpensive campsite or a simple place to stay for a couple of nights in the New Forest for a family of 3. We'd love to be close to the free-roaming ponies if possible but don't have any of our own gear for camping so renting a static caravan or equipped tent would be our ideal. Any suggestions, please?
Đã viết vào 9 tháng 7, 2020
There's a place in the North of the forrest called Tom's field, tents, caravans, not far from local pub; there'll be loads of other places on Google.

Is Blackwater Arboretum fenced?
Đã viết vào 28 tháng 7, 2019
Yes Blackwater Arboretum is fenced to prevent damage to the trees by the wild animals. The public use the gates and can enter the Arboretum at any time. There is a car park on the other side of the road close by.

We are going to Isle of Wight for a week this August and would like to visit the New Forest for a picnic on the way to Lymington ferry terminal. Is it free to enter and are there many picnic benches available?
Đã viết vào 10 tháng 5, 2019
Hi Aimie,
I would suggest going to Bolderwood or Blackwater Car Parks as they would give you a real taste of the Forest and have picnic areas and toilet facilities situated in the Forest. They are also not far off the mail route you would travel if going to Lymington ferry terminal.
If you needed to have a quick stop if you had been caught in traffic then stop in Lyndhurst and head to Bolton's Bench. Sadly no picnic benches but there are benches.
The New Forest National Park is free to enter.
