Had a great time and well worth visiting!

We came across this place and what a hidden delight it was with beautifully maintained buildings and facilities, the mill is smallish but the preservation team need to be congratulated on preserving this working water mill, the entrance is a fair price and contributes to its upkeep and helps ensure its future, it’s on three floors although access isn’t too bad as they have installed good stairways to each floor with handrails, the guy in the working mill was excellent and explained so much at a level that was easy to understand, his chat was interesting and he made the visit so much better due to his very pleasant and helpful attitude throughout, they have restored the mill so you can see it working and buy some of the flour that’s been milled there to go home and bake some real bread (yum yum) they have worked hard with informative posters and displays to make it a really good place to visit, there is a small cafe with friendly staff serving great hot and cold drinks as well as snacks and sandwiches etc, there is also a small gift shop with interesting things to buy, we didn’t get the time to try out the narrow gauge railway which runs several trips per day, the area around Heatherslaw is dotted with many things to do which would entertain almost everyone with the variety from Castles, nature reserves, Flodden battlefield, heavy horse centre etc search for tourism@ford-and-etal.co.uk to see the many things on offer in the area, well worth a visit!

A pleasant and interesting visit

The workings of the mill are well explained on boards as you walk around and there are also interesting insights into its history and the lives of the people who lived and worked in the surrounding countryside. Very pleasant tearoom added to the visit.

Nice family outing

Lovingly restored working mill.

The miller took time to explain and engage the children in the workings of the mill, explaining them them the details and got them really interested in it.

Very fair price for a family ticket.

Parking is free and dogs are also welcome.

Fascinating working mill with great staff and interesting exhibitions.

We thought this would be a quick visit on a wet day but we spent over two hours at the mill. I’m sorry I don’t have the names but the lady on the desk and the miller were both so friendly and welcoming, it was a real treat. The miller let us join a group who were just arriving so we had a detailed overview of the workings of the mill, we then wandered around the fascinating exhibition and the miller came to find us (in between changing bags for the flour etc – it really is a working mill) and spent more time answering our questions. My husband was interested in how the machinery worked, I was interested in how many people worked there, how they lived in the past, in other words the social history, and there was a lot of this too. We finished our visit with a great lunch in the tearoom. Highly recommend the mill as a great day out.

A lovely working waterwheel and mill stone
thg 5 năm 2021 • Gia đình
We visited the cornmill on a very drizzly day with a toddler and a baby after our trip on the nearby small gauge railway. The miller was very friendly and helped our toddler find all the bits on the kids activity sheet. She let our toddler open the water gate and start the mill which made her afternoon! The mill stone is still connected to the water wheel and so still works! This fascinated both kids for a good while. We also tried the dress up corner on the top floor of the mill. Very nice hour out of the rain, thoroughly recommend!

Nice venue…shame about the ice cream!

Lovely venue with friendly service. Had a nice coffee sitting outside. Food on the whole looked good.
The “gelato” however would have an Italian turning in his grave!
We subsequently found out it was vegan ice cream and it was truly awful. It was not advertised as such, Avoid the ice cream at all costs!!

This is a great place which was very good value for £4 entry. The girls were so kind and took time to explain how the mill works which the kids loved. We adults learned a lot too! Great job

Definately worth visiting the working mill which is on 3 floors. Entry £4 for adults.

Knowledgeable guide was lovely to talk to. Thank you.

Amazing what we can produce with natural resources - getting back to basics!

Nice little gift shop too.
