Loved this as we have a house of a similar period so was fantastic to see what it would have been like in the 20s. Best NT property we've been to. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Can't recommend highly enough if you're interested in vintage decor.

Good car park and toilet facilities, checked in by a very pleasant young man and shown round by a very friendly, knowledgeable guide. Enjoyed looking around but disappointed that there was nowhere to sit down, let alone anywhere you could buy refreshments.
Very interesting place to look around but, although we found our tour excellent it was over far too quickly.

This was really good. Had to book a timed slot online. Had to use the sat nav to find it. Managed to park easily. A guide gave us a talk firstly. She was really informative and had known adult Mr Straw when she was a child. The house is like stepping back in time. A real eye opener. I can’t describe it very well really. You think you’ll have seen it all before in museums etc but you really haven’t. It’s definitely a one off and well worth a trip.

We had a brilliant time at Mr Straws House. Lovely staff and volunteers. Covid precautions are well organised with staggered entry times and a one way route around the house and garden. After a short introduction we were free to wander around ourselves! We felt very safe. After an interesting short introduction outside went inside. There was a guide in the house to answer questions who gave some fascinating snippets of information. Thank you Peter and Jill!
The house is a divine time capsule and feels like the family could just walk in at any moment, catching you nosing around their home.
There is a small shop area in reception and toilets are available. Very convenient parking is opposite the house.

Well really two houses, as the straws actually bought two semi detached properties adjoining each other.

You will be met by very informative and well trained guides in the morning or you can do your own self guided tour in the afternoon, guides are still on hand to answer your questions.

Visit here is a must as many pieces will be familiar and it gives a real flavour of local life.

Attended the preservation tour at Mr Straw's on a wet December day, when the house is closed to standard visits for the winter. Much work happens in the closed season to clean and preserve the house and contents. The curator took two of use around the house and told us not only about the preservation work, but the history of the family, the house and artefacts, plus into behind the scenes areas. This tour was "without ropes" so we got up close to everything, took photos and asked as many questions as we wished. I learned so much. At £10 per person, above standard membership of the National Trust, the tour was exceptional value, taking over 2 hours and made us feel like VIPs travelling back in time. Congratulations to the staff and volunteers at the house who do such a fantastic job in preserving this important time-capsule. Well worth attending this and I recommended this tour to anyone with an interest in social history and conservation.

So pleased to hear that you enjoyed attending the tour as much as we enjoyed delivering it! This is a new venture for us, so we are pleased to get any feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back in our open season, from 3rd March 2020.

A guided tour of this NT property, at number 7, is very revealing. One guide gives a clear introduction and there are guides on the ground floor and the first; they offer plenty of information on the dining room, parlour, kitchen and bathroom. The top floor is only for self-guiding.

Most of the rooms are small and there’s a good deal of clutter in some of them – but then the Straws didn’t anticipate so many visitors. Their collections run to some 30,000 items. The south-facing first-floor bedroom is more spacious and much brighter.

For self-guiding, there are various photos with captions around the house, for instance showing the Straws’ parents, and also William Straw Jr among students at King’s College London in 1920. On a ‘Listening Post’ you can hear three people’s memories of working at Walter Straw’s shop; one of them talks about the ‘resident’ cat very charmingly.

There’s also extensive material on both World Wars, including a newspaper reporting Chamberlain’s speech on 3 September 1939.

The greenhouse outside is especially interesting for its collection of cacti. Walter Straw built it up and was a real expert on the plants. A huge cactus is in one of the rooms too.

I've wanted to visit Mr Straw's House for a long time, but for various reasons the need for phoning in advance to book meant we've never done it. We had been at Creswell Crags and decided to travel back via Worksop to see if there were any tour spaces. We were in luck! We had a short while to wait... in theory. The weather was fine and the orchard car park would have been a pleasant spot, there was a tea room, a shop, a comfortable seat... and the back gardens to explore. Very pleasant welcoming staff.

There was a lot I liked about the gardens, but I think there's scope for the National Trust to do more here - from the description of the Straw's time, it is begging for an auricula theatre for example.

I appreciated the brief introduction (later tours in the day are self guided, which tends to suit us but I can imagine that guided visits might be worthwhile) There are only 4 places on a tour and you'll need to hand over your backpack for the duration but these are absolutely appropriate measures for this very particular conservation situation (make sure to keep hold of your reading specs!)

For us, it was quite an eerie experience as this is a house not very different to our own (and it reminded my son of us being repeatedly 'invaded' by visitors by mistake when we stayed in a National Trust holiday cottage) A similar approach is being taken to that at Calke, so it is preservation rather than restoration, damp damaged wallpapers and all.

Although it is a 'domestic' sized house, a great deal of interest is packed into it, and the adjoining house is given over to exhibitions and space for work on collections.

Not to be underestimated!

We're pleased that you enjoyed your visit - and we are planning to re-instate the auricula theatre in 2020!

My wife and I were visiting friends in Sheffield and they had booked this for 11.30am Sat morning. Our expectations weren't very high as it was "just a house". How wrong we were - After a nice cuppa waiting for our tour we were treat to a very interesting tour of each floor by a different volunteer. So many interesting stories and facts and objects. The Gent on the ground floor sold us on buying raffle tickets we had no intention of buying due to explaining what they would do to the house with the money raised - excellent. Highly recommend this place and the toilet was absolutely spotlessly clean.
