Take lots of time and things easy - a lot to see and ground to cover. The staff well informed and indeed out on the reserve spotting and recording regularly so that the 'sightings' log is constantly updated. A member for many years that subscription - well spent. No guarantee as to what you will see but always a surprise and share experiences with like minded people.

Great play areas and amazing views. Lovely place for tea and cake. Brilliant nature, friendly staff and volunteers. I'll be back!

We had a great experience walking there in 2019, free parking, good cafe and great walk. We went back to the Brooks a couple of days ago (June 2022) only to find that they are now charging for parking (£3) per car via phone app!! Not everyone wants these apps and certainly not everyone wants to be 'hooked up' to the internet all the time. Thankfully we live in the nearby area and have lots of 'free' walks around us to choose from. We'll not come back to the Brooks, lots of better walks elsewhere...for free

We enjoyed our circular walk through the reserve. One hide was out of bounds. The cafe was shut. Part of the car park was cordoned off because a tree had fallen. Water levels on the reserve were very low. Despite all this, we had an enjoyable experience and saw more than 40 bird species. The highlight of our visit was a sighting of a Purple Hairstreak butterfly. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We have frequented the Brooks for many years, not just the birds, but a relaxing view, and lovely cafe.
The staff are very welcoming, provide a good service. However the food is nothing like it used to be...
It's the second time we have been since things opened up after Covid. I am afraid the The carrot cake and coffee cake were just awful.
We were told that things are being improved.. I really hope they are..

Excellent multi seed bacon bap with brown sauce, very helpful staff and comfortable cafe tables and chairs.

Our fist visit for some time. Friendly staff as usual. Cafe not open. We had a good walk round visiting the bird hides (face mask in place and socially distanced). Great views of Jay, Peregrine, Marsh Harrier and Nuthatch. Lots of ducks and geese o the wetland area plus quite a few waders.

The welcome desk is outside.
The café has a limited menu of drinks and hot snacks. There is seating outside and some socially distanced inside - tables for 4 on each side so there is more room and extra tables that have been taken out stacked on each other in the closed off area.
The visitor centre is open for the shop only.
Toilets are accessed from outside and a one way system signed.
Entrance to the reserve is via the path at the side of the building.
Once on the reserve we didn’t see any difference - the hides are all open (with markings to aid social distancing and notes to leave the windows open) and we had a good walk. There are various signs telling you about management work they are doing though no work was going on during our visit or wildlife and flowers you might see.

I broke my leg and as my first trip out of the house, we decided to go to the cafe at The Brooks. We’re regulars walking around the reserve but this was an all together different visit with a different perspective. From the moment we pulled up and got out of the car, the ladies in the ‘Welcome’ hut were smiling and friendly, they immediately made sure we knew where we were going and which was the best route on crutches. As I hobbled into the cafe, I decided I needed the loo. We went through the shop where two more ladies couldn’t do enough for us. One of the ladies showed us the way and chatted about how my injury came about. Eventually we made it back to the cafe where the ladies at the window were full of character and laughter. Now I will say, my other half is a bit of a character himself and tends to get people chatting but the level of friendliness, kindness and customer service made this a morning to remember. A beautiful place that I was already in love with, I’ve been left even MORE impressed. At all three stations, I was told about various facilities and services available to help me get the most from my visit. I will be back very soon.

If you are an RSPB member you can access the nature trails for free. If you're not a member the entry fee is £5 for adults, £2 for children. Additional charges are made for events. You can find further details for your visit on the rspb website

Can you take dogs ?

Sorry, only just picked up your question. We have two nature trails on the reserve. You are very welcome to bring your dogs along with you for a walk on our wooded heathland trail. There is a public footpath that runs through this area and we have created some permissive paths where you can walk to make a circular walk. We do of course ask that dogs are kept under control at all times and on a lead in certain areas where we graze livestock or are managed for vulnerable ground-nesting birds. You can also enjoy a cup of tea and cake on our tea terrace (there is both a covered area and an open area) which has lovely views. We do not allow dogs on our wetland trail to minimize disturbance to sensitive wildlife.
