Great place through which one can walk, cycle, many other activities within the Park Precinct.
The River flowed swiftly along its course.
A lovely outdoor experience.

My wife and I stayed in a Suite at the Mansion Hotel for 2 nights. This park is just next to the Hotel.
It is a very large park that has many beautiful trees, a lake, some flowers and is very well maintained.

Okay, I’m sure it was the title of my review that’s prompted you to read further. Before you start thinking I’ve clearly lost my mind, I’d like to start by clarifying some details. First, I visited Werribee Mansion twice in the one weekend:
1) To attend a play ‘What was that?’
2) To explore parts of the mansion, including the gardens, which I didn’t get to see on the eve of the play (it was an evening play and my first time at the mansion.)
The play is not your average one in that it’s not a sit down performance with a stage. It uses only 2 characters (plus the stage manager for special effects) and it’s a roaming play. The story is set in 1908 following the death of Mary Chirnside and the mansion is about to be taken over by new owners. The household staff have dwindled to one maid and the butler; both of whom are on edge for fear of losing their jobs with the new owners. Play attendees infiltrate the house posing as friends of the Chirnsides. Between the warm and hospitable maid, Maggie, and the wary supercilious butler, Mr Duncan, you’re taken through the key rooms of the mansion. Through dialogue and story telling, you learn about the lives of the Chirnside family including their downfalls, the history of the mansion and the culture of upper class families in Australia in the 19th and early 20th Century. I was blown away by the theatrics and being an interactive play, had fun engaging the cast in banter.
Upon returning the day after, I was blown away by the remainder of the mansion and the gardens. Between the gold leaf work, grand staircase, lighting and marble floors, it reminded me strangely of the Palace of Versailles in France, Hampton Court Palace in England and Beast’s castle in ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ I say strangely because where Versailles was more of a museum, Werribee Mansion was extremely believable as a home in spite of its grandeur. A lot of the original furniture and artefacts have been retained (for furniture such as beds, replicas have been cleverly crafted) and care has been taken to set up the rooms to look like someone is living in the mansion.
I also liked the way replicas of outfits, which would’ve been worn (or represent typical attire of) by the Chirnside family and their staff, have been placed around the mansion. Again, it helps bring history to life.
As for the gardens, between the sprawling green lawns, the lake grotto and the flowers, I really enjoyed visiting the outside part as much as I enjoyed the inside of the mansion.
With all of this in mind, I couldn’t help thinking of the usual cliches hence the review title:
- History comes to life
- Stepping back through time
- Living history
My few criticisms hence the 4 star rating:
1) Cafe could have had more tables to accommodate more people; as it was, I had to ask an older couple to let me join them just to be able to sit down
2) Food was hastily thrown onto paper plates. In the age of conservation, the mansion really needs to explore more sustainable options.
3) More care needs to be taken with keeping toilets clean - the standards of cleanliness definitely didn’t mirror the rest of the mansion, which was quite disappointing

The service is substandard to say the least. Staff cannot show common courtesy here. ALL the food was served in throw away paper items. Don't be so lazy Werribee Mansion. Use reusable crockery etc and wash up. STOP using throw away items. No idea about sustainability and this is disgraceful when you are in a park run by Parks Victoria.

Wonderful place to visit. Beautifully curated and a great team of volunteers who you can tell love working there. Great insight into how life was back in the 19th century.

Top locatie. Doordat we af en toe een bui hadden niet volledig gelopen. Het stuk dat we gedaan was prachtige. Atuur. Dus zeker een aanrader.

Just bad. Dirty tables. People kept waiting and orders mixed up and pretty ordinary food. I felt really bad for the young staff - they seemed inexperienced and there didn't appear to be any system. Not a good for a tourist location.

the gardens are gorgeous, go there for a picnic.
the mansion itself smelled really bad. all three of us had allergic reactions to the dust and spores within this old building.
also the front of house staff were extra rude.
the catholic priest training section is creepy.
