With my godchild I visited the fortress on 23 November 2024, which - as the tour turned out - was exactly 80 years and a week after it was liberated again in the Second World War. Here history comes alive and comprehensible.
Our guide was extremely nice, spoke accent-free German and responded with great pleasure to every question we had. She expressed herself in such a way that my 10-year-old godchild could understand it well.
At the beginning of the tour there was a brief outline of the Franco-German rivalry since the Franco-Prussian War, so the construction of the facility was classified historically. A large part of the leadership covered the daily lives of ordinary soldiers. The "conconitis" of the soldiers living underground was very vividly illustrated. On the electric mountain railway, which ordinary soldiers were not allowed to use, we drove through the tunnels to the combat stands. A double-barrel 135mm gun turret was extensively restored and demonstrated in its operation - uniquely on the whole Maginot line. To get there, you have to travel a few steps. However, physically and health-impaired people have the possibility to use the likewise functional former ammunition elevator. Here we were also led to the surface and the main tower was also shown to us from the outside. At this point, the fort was also attacked by the Americans in 1944 from the blind spot of the defensive guns. One "lucky thing" about the great battle damage is that you can see the particularly hard "blue concrete" with which the casemates had been poured very well.
Other areas of the tour included the kitchens, storage rooms, the infirmary (particularly well equipped after the shock of the First World War), air filters, the shelters and the 4 powerful functioning but no longer original diesel generators. There are also areas where weapons, equipment and memorabilia are displayed.
What had impressed besides the facility itself was the commitment of the many volunteers on site, who can maintain the whole thing in an elaborate manner and present it to the public.
Unrestrictedly recommended!

Family visit of this exceptional work.
Our passionate, experienced guide has brought us back to this painful past that must not be forgotten.
The 2- to 3-hour walk will take you on a journey to a perfectly preserved and renovated historic place.
Don't be surprised, you don't take the train (of the period and used to transport troops, ammunition and equipment) right away, you must first discover many parts of the fort to understand the life of a soldier during this terrible war.
A very nice visit and congratulations to all the volunteers of this association who work to pursue the duty of memory.

A special experience. Extraordinarily interesting and impressive. What an amazing job all those volunteers have done. And finally our guide Paul. In a very nice way and with a lot of knowledge he showed us around this immense ford. Thanks Paul! All in all a great recommendation!

Very informative visit with Maxence very well realized. A small flat concerning the pseudo animation of the ghost of heavy halloween to the end and which has no place in a historical visit.

Two and a half hours of little-known history. An extraordinary visit to this part of our country's history. Everyone has heard of the Maginot line, we discover the reality. Not to mention a very nice young guide who explains very well and introduces us to the building.

You really can't miss this one. If you are in the area I would definitely consider a visit.
The tour lasts more than 2.5 hours and leads you through the corridors and with a train you travel from one side to the other.
The guide (a Frenchman), could speak a very nice word of English (and that's quite something, most French people don't speak English at all), and really took his time.
We participated along with a few Americans and British.
The Briton was already a bit older but he still asked quite a few good questions but the guide knew an answer to everything!
The journey there is also very nice.
I didn't think it was too expensive in terms of price when you see that you are there for over 2.5 hours!

From their webpage: Du 14 novembre 2016 à fin mars 2017, départs les samedis et mercredis, horaire unique à 14h précise
So Saturday December 31st might be possible. You need to call first to be sure. One tour organized around 2PM. In general they have someone who gives the tour in English.
Try calling 03 82 82 30 08 to see if they can confirm.

Are any of the tours in English or is it only an English brochure that is handed out for those in need of something?
Đã viết vào 26 tháng 11, 2016
We try to offer an English tour every day that the fort is open, although on a very few occasions off-season then there may not be an English-speaking guide. In this case some explanatory sheets are provided to accompany another tour.

Hi, I will be on an Avalon Rhine River Tour, and will be in Strasbourg on Sunday, September 4. Is it possible to arrange transportation from Strasbourg to the Fort? It appears that you do have an English speaking tour @ 2:15 on that Sunday. Thank you so much.
Đã viết vào 14 tháng 8, 2016
Hello,
As one of the English guides I can confirm that travel from Strasbourg is easiest by car. You could get a train and then a taxi but it is probably time-consuming and expensive.
If you do decide to rent a car and come to see us then I hope that you enjoy the visit.

Hello,
I am one of the English tour guides at the Hackenberg !
If you are driving from southern England then the best option is to cross the channel and then drive down through Belgium (free motorways!) to Thionville.
There is plenty of choice concerning hotels in Thionville and the surroinding area depending on budget.
We have daily tours until 11 November, and if you come on a weekend then it might be with me !
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Paul

Hello, I am one of the English speaking guides at the fort. All suggestions I have seen are good so far - you can either fly to Luxembourg and hire a car, or come to France via the tunnel or ferry and drive. We normally drive here via Belgium as the motorways are free !
There are English tours every day until 12 November, so you should be OK. Departure is 2.15pm on a weekend or around 2.45pm during the week.
As I am a volunteer I only do visits on a weekend (I did one today !) but there are other people during the week.
There are plenty of other places to see round here too - Thionville, Metz, Verdun, Luxembourg....so you should be able to find things to do and places to stay on TripAdvisor.
Enjoy your trip !

Hi, we would like to visit the fort inJuly and have a tour in English, are you open every day and what time are the tours please? Can we look around the fort before or after the tour?
Many thanks,
Ali

Hello,
I am one of the English speaking guides at the Fort.
Between April and the end of October there is an English tour every day, except for four days at the end of August. The English tour starts at 2.15pm. No need to book as we can take up to 50 people.
You can look around outside if you wish - there is a good view from the top-nost point of the fort (blocs 11 and 12 by the Chapel) and the visit itself normally takes around 2.5 hours.
As I am a volunteer guide I am only there on a weekend, but there will be someone to take you round every day !!

Hello,
to go from Paris to Thionville, you can take the train (TGV), there are daily roundtrips. Then, when you are in Thionville, you can call the taxi station and say you want to go to HACKENBERG, VECKRING, and then come back to Thionville.
I hope this answer will help you planning your trip, and if you have more questions, you can write us an email (you can find the adress on our website, I can't write it here!).
Best regards,
Sarah
