Greenwood Furnace is always so clean, the water so cold, the camping so welcoming! One of my favorite places to camp. It is so pretty here, the sandy beach and the hiking spots. The water is so good, it really is the perfect camping spot.
I've been camping here since I was 18 and went on my first vacation. I prefer it off season, before all the hustle and bustle, when its more quiet and the kids are still in school. So peaceful! My dog loved it here too. Great camp for walking, riding bike, and taking long hikes. They had wood you could buy for $5 and they did not charge extra for showers or anything else like visitors. Everything was reasonable, but no water at the camp sites. No internet or cell reception here, its too far back in but if you travel 10 miles out you can make a call.

Did the Over look trail Hike with sister and her husband It is well marked and a bit difficult in certain spots but well worth the Hike and the hike down too

We were really excited to see this park. The website made it lol like there was a substantial visitor museum. There is not...when you enter the visitor center/gift shop, there are three small display cases that had fragments to what we assume were dug up on the property.
The one staff member there was fixated on doing inventory abs gave us very little infuriation. My husband asked her what there is to do in the park regarding learning about it and she was very short with him.
As I looked through the very small gift shop she had half of it blocked off with inventory boxes. During that time (about ten minutes) a family waited to get information as she continued to do inventory.
She did the a minute to stamp our passport book and we were also able to get a stamp for Rothrock State Forest which we passed through on our way in.
After we finished at the visitors center we drive around the park. There were a few signs at the furnace and company store but there was very little interpretation.
We were only there for a day trip but it looked like there were lots of facilities for campers. If we were campers we would certainly return.
I wish these places would focus on teaching the public about the history and background of these places. I would love to know how this park became a place with a furnace and how long has it been there? There is so little infuriation. There was one book in the gift store but it was for a utter location. Great place o camp for hiking and biking the Rothrock trail system. Large tent camping sites with a lot of space between sites. Very clean showers (hot water) and toilets. Easy access to the state park for swimming in a sand bottom lake. Potable water stations throughout. Ice and firewood sales at the entrance. I loved it there.

This scenic park isn’t far the Raystown Lake area. That’s how we found it years ago. In the 1830’s the Greenwood furnaces were built due to the demand for iron ore which the area was rich in. The surrounding forest provided the wood needed to make charcoal for the furnace. By the 1880’s a town had sprung up with homes, a company store, stables, blacksmith, and they added a gristmill in 1842. It was built to provide the mill with water. Due to the growing demand for iron they eventually built three more furnaces. As the furnaces and production grew so did the town. They added a church, school, wagon shop and ironmaster’s mansion. Around 330 acres a year of trees were cut and used to make charcoal for the furnaces, this lead to the depletion of the forest. In December 1904 the furnaces closed down. Families moved away and the town became a thing of the past. In 1995 the park was designated a historic landmark. Today it’s a nice park that offers a lake for fishing, beach, picnic areas, camping and hiking trails to see many of the historic spots. In addition to seeing the furnace and it’s remnants you can still see the wagon and blacksmith shop, ironmaster’s mansion, stables, church and the cemetery. The cemetery has two Revolutionary War veterans buried there.

Working our way to all the PA parks we can find in each area we visit. This one has nice picnic area and pavilions and a sandy beach at the lake. Great place to go for a hot sunny day, quiet picnic, or fall leaves excursion.

Camped at this intriguing state park and was impressed by beauty, accommodations, history. Park staff were also friendly & helpful. If you need to be on your cellphone 24/7, you might be disappointed. Otherwise, I would rank it among my top 3 parks visited.

We always enjoy camping here. It’s a State Park and not a commercial campground so no Internet or FHUs but that’s why we like it. We’ll be back!

We always enjoy coming to Greenwood Furnace SP. I don’t feel like they are maintaining/cleaning the campground bathroom as well as they used to and would have downgraded my rating if it was much worse and/or I felt the rest of the park was being neglected. The campsites still seem to be in good shape and most are pretty level. We find it a very peaceful and pretty campground.
The park is an enjoyable location to picnic and the facilities are pretty clean. The shelters which you can reserve are wonderful for gatherings with family and friends. Kids usually enjoy splashing around in the lake’s swimming area and visiting the ironworks museum. There is also an assortment of hiking trails to choose from.

Well maintained. We love walking at Greenwood and have great memories of swimming there as children. It's a great place to have a family picnic.
