My wife & I visited the PBG on a sunny Sunday morning in late September. The facility is not large, but there are enough hills & stairs & walking paths (combination of gravel & grass & wood chip & concrete) to get some fresh air exercise as you enjoy the quiet & beautiful surroundings. The landscapes are well maintained (there were crews clearing & planting new spaces during our walk), the views are photo-worthy, and the distinct natural areas offer a good variety of spaces for lingering & enjoying. An unexpected & inventive feature were the "Tree Times" educational cards located in several spots along the walking trails (look for the mailbox-like holders on stands) which highlight various Garden plants & link their ages to important historical events. There are also specific Garden areas designed to encourage children's education & exploration, which are a noteworthy part of the PBG mission..

The lady at the Welcome Center desk was very friendly & customer focused. We were able to use our hometown botanical garden membership card to gain free access to the Garden (American Horticultural Society reciprocal privilege). Their gift shop in the Welcome Center is small but well stocked. And as a bonus, we wrapped up our visit with a tasty lunch at the indoor/outdoor Canopy Café (open to paying guests as well as public access without fee). The Café workers were friendly & efficient (even with a large lunch crowd & a pandemic-short staff - special kudos to Miriam at the order counter), and the food was fresh & delicious.

We would definitely return to Pittsburgh Botanic Garden in Oakdale, PA if we visited the area again, and we highly recommend it as a pleasant weather destination for families & couples & individuals.

This is a really nice place to visit if you are in the area. It is very well maintained and very pretty. We visited on our recent trip to the Pittsburgh area and were not disappointed. The new welcome center is beautiful and the cafe was very nice. No I must warn you the service in the cafe was just a little slow, but the food was very good and they allowed the dog ( seems as long as your dog isn't disruptive it is fine). Now outside the trails & paths were very well groomed and peaceful. We walked around with the dog and explore for taking or time and it was very pleasant. I would say we spent about 3 hours there after eating lunch.
There are places to fill your water bottle which was also nice. We would definitely recommend adding this to you itinerary.

I've been wanting to visit here for awhile now and then covid shut everything down, so our visit was delayed to this year.
We were pleasantly surprised by the gardens. More people should know about this place!
The lake and the lilly pads were beautiful. We walked through the wooded area and the meadows which led us to the flower gardens. Is it extravagant, no. Is it beautiful, yes. It was an enjoyable afternoon and I thought the cost was acceptable.
They are still working and building out these gardens, so we'll definitely be back.

...it was today. I'm so glad Mary suggested coming here. Even more glad she bought a membership, and I got in for free on that. Really awesome few hours here, chit-chatting while enjoying the awesome early fall foliage. In fact when I left I told her to take me here again in a couple weeks when the leaves will be raging. It was a weekday, and there weren't many people here, and I just loved it. So relaxing and feeling free from the coveted stress and all the other nonsense with the election. This is the perfect place to get away from it all. Thanks so much Mary.

I've been here a few times over the years. Each time can see how it is growing.

They just opened the Garden of the Five Senses. It is really more of a kid space but still nice. Vegetable garden area but also flowers throughout. Long term appears to provide drinking fountains and rest rooms along with an outdoor lecture area.

There is a large building still under construction with more, closer parking. Hopefully when it opens they can also re-open the trail that connects the pond with the entrance area.

Visited here on Tuesday October 8 2019. We drove an hour to visit this place specifically. It was not at all what I expected. I thought it would be a smaller version of Hershey Gardens but it was not. It is roughly a 3 mile walk, if you walk the entire thing. You walk through what is similar to a corn field, then an area of woods. There is really nothing garden related here. The lotus pond is amazing and relaxing.
We visited during radical day so we did not pay the normal $10 a person admission fee. I would of been highly disappointed if we had paid to visit. Where we live, we have free natural areas that are just like this. I was looking for more garden area with flowers and colors.

This botanical garden was still a nice walk and the weather that day was beautiful. Dogs are allowed. It is a nice place to go, if you are used to the city and highways.
Just not what I expected.

This Botanic Garden is GREAT for many reasons...it's quiet, out of the way, beautiful, and...dogs are allowed. My two really love to be in the woods and this is a nice option relatively close to home. The gift shop is quite lovely too -- and we happened on a wedding there on our last visit. So magical.

Found this place as it showed on a map close to hotel. Checked-in and they recommended umbrellas which they had available at no cost, and it did start raining. Hiked around the area and saw the small little areas of interest. Many trees had their placards so you knew what you were looking at. Bought some local honey which was delicious.

Don't get me wrong I love going to botanical gardens. I've been to several in many different cities. This one just didn't cut it. These are the reasons why: Firstly, if you are coming here expecting it to be like Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens you are not going to get that experience. I think the main reason why I was so disappointed, not only because I was trying to compare it to Phipps, but it's not really a garden... In my honest opinion, it is more of an intermediate nature trail with some small attractions along the way.

Here are some tips that come from the mistakes I made on this trail.

1. Wear tennis shoes, hiking shoes/boots. You are going to need something with support and even ankle support. They don't tell you, but it's extremely hilly and uneven grounding. I wore sandals and had dirt, gravel, wood chips, and grass all in my shoes.

2. The whole family is not going to be able to come here. I'm speaking mainly people who aren't able to walk very well, like the elderly or anyone who need accessibility. There would be no way for them to enjoy this attraction

3. BRING A WATER BOTTLE with you. There are no places with a fountain. And once you are on the trail it's a far walk back to the front desk to get one.

4. You are going to need sunscreen and also put on the bug spray. This is literally a walk through the woods. And although it was peaceful, you still want to be prepared.

I think I went a little harsh about what I said, there is a condition to this. Pittsburgh Botanical Gardens are newer. They opened in 2014, so they are in the baby stages of making it into what it could be. I think if I came back in 20 years it will be refreshing and exciting. But at the same time, it's nice to have an outdoor trail. So my warning is to not coming in expecting much and just enjoy the sounds, sights, and even the exhaustion of the outdoors.

The Botanic Garden is such a special place and truly a hidden gem. My kiddos really enjoy coming here and discovering nature treasures. The 17 year cicadas were out in full force- mostly just noisy but there were several flying around. The Japanese Garden is my favorite area- very serene and peaceful.
