What a beautiful building inside and out. The original part of the building dates back to mid-1850 if my memory serves me right. It is the most impressive to me because of the construction material. I do not believe buildings nowadays could be built to this level of opulence. The exhibits within the building do not fall short by any means either. The collection is well laid out and beautifully maintained. There were school tours being conducted, but it did not at all hinder the experience because of the true professionalism of the museum staff. The entire staff within the museum is professional and extremely well-educated. So much to see, I will have to visit again when up in the "Burgh" next visit.

Imagine not only seeing dinosaur bones but being able to lie next to one; or touching a lion mount! The dioramas allowed my 4 yr old grandson to get a feel for the size of one animal next to another. He especially enjoyed the igloo and seeing the kayak and walrus exhibit.

Excellent displays with good spacing between them, large halls for social-distancing or crowds, bench seating in each hall section for rests or the weary, and reasonable entry fees for all with special pricing for seniors, children, tours, etc.

It is in the same building (art museum), you just pass through the hall and you are in the history section. It is one of 4 Carnegie Institute museums located in Pittsburgh. If you love dinosaurs, nature, wildlife, and history, then this is definitely the one to put near the top of your bucket list.
The museum's central exhibit is a collection of authentic dinosaur fossils and some reproductions, including a Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. most well known for its expansive dinosaur fossil collection, an impressive 1300+ piece mineral, and gem collection, and dozens of realistic dioramas spotlighting wildlife in North America and Africa
One of the finest collections and displays of gems and minerals in the world can be found at CMNH.
Entry fee: Adults $19.95, children 3-18 $11.95, under 2 free. At the same fee, you can also see an art museum.
Parking: We did street side parking, its free on Sunday

What a great way to spend a cold, rainy day in Pittsburgh! This is a large museum and is connected to the Carnegie Museum of Art - both included in a very reasonable price. Pitt students get in free too! We spent over 4 hours there and didn't even see everything. We ate at the Fossil Fuels Cafe and thought the pricing was reasonable. Great displays and information - I would definitely go back when in the area.

My visit was to view, read and photograph the dinosaurs, This section is located behind one the museum's gifts, just keep heading straight ahead until 'Dinosaurs In Their Time" First is the fish or sealife fossils that leads to the dinosaurs. I photographed 47 dinosaurs, 26 fish/sea life & 21 mammals which is after the dinosaurs.
One staff member explained that 70% of a dinosaur's skeleton is real with the rest being 30% cast , with the fish fossils being 100% real. The mammals I would estimate 50-50 replica & real. Some of the fish are from Kansa, YES Kansas which was an ocean 100 M.Y.A.-Million Years Ago. The mammals are are 10,00 to 20,000 years ago.
After the natural history I photgraphed the architecture of Greek & Roman sculpture which I estimate to be 4,000 years of age.
There ate two cafes-The Cafe Carnegie located on first floor which is an upper class facility. The second cafe is the Fossil Fuels Cafe, which is located beneath the natural history museum. This cafe is more family-friendly that serves sandwiches, soups, pastries, pizza, & daily specials. This cafe I ate at, which was three large slices of pizza, two slices would have been euough.
The museum is three floors. First floor is mostly natural history. Second floor is more natural history-but only 10,00 years old-that includes Hall of African Wildlife, Hall of Botany, North American Life, Heinz & ScaifiGalleries. Third floor has the Bird Hall, R.P Simmon Family Gallery & the Walten of Ancient Egypt. Each floor has restroom facilities.
At admissions a visitor should pick-up a map that will show all the exhibits on each floor. There are two gift shops. The Art Store has prints, crafted gifts, dedesigner jeweley & books. Second shop is the Nantural History shop, mostly deals mostly dinosaurs & related items.
Parking is located in the rear of the museum, which I think was $10.00. Each visitor hsas to stop at one of two gates attended by a cashier, after the gate drive to open garage, park & drive oot.
I would say this museum would be the second enjoyable natural history behind the natural museum in the city of Wahington. A visit is highly recommended. A see a return visit with floors # 2&3 to visit.

The mineral exhibit was amazing, with a good history of PA minerals and the coal and steel of Pittsburgh’s past. Compared to other natural history museums, there was not as much interactive areas for learning. They were here and there, not linked throughout. There was more walking and looking around, and not as much immersion in learning. Best part was the microscopes that projected on the wall.

Well maintained and expansive museum. Extensive gemstone/mineral exhibits and fantastic dinosaur exhibits. If you go after 3pm on the weekdays you get in for half off. We had no problem getting through the museum in 2 hours. I would recommend it unless you have little ones that don't move too quick :)

I had planned to spend about 90 minutes there with an active almost 4 year old boy. We spent at least one hour on the first floor alone before we went to the 2nd floor. Never made it to the 3rd floor at all where they have water features because the museum closed. Next time I'll start on the top floor and work my way down. Allow 2-3 hours depending on the age of the children.
Is there handicapped parking? How accessible is the parking area to the museums?

Is this museum good for a 2 year old and a 5 year old? Is there enough to keep them entertained?

There is a kids area. The problem will be the adults wanting to roam around while the kids play in the kids area (which is on the small side for such a large museum). I would think really curious kids would enjoy seeing the dinos and stuffed critters as well.

didnt see any taxies around. Uber you can. there are also many buses right in front of it. check maps to see how to get to your hotel. PIT public transport is a great way to see town! take bus from museum to waterfront (D bus), long and beautiful ride, and much shopping at waterfront. DSW, and more

What are the highlights of this museum?

My highlight is always the dinosaurs and the gem stone area. I could spend all day just in those 2 sections. Also the Inuit section on the top floor is a favorite for me as well. They also have an area where children can explore and be hands on with different things relating to wildlife etc. which I would think would be very exciting for young people.
Is it walkable from the Hyatt
