Visited here yesterday. This museum is attached to the Natural History Museum and the admission you pay is for both. The museum is large and beautiful. The museum contains art from many years ago and modern art. There are displays of many paintings, a hall of beautiful scupltures , etc. There American Indian and Egyptian exhibits which are very interesting. Gift shop is nice and has unique items. There is a cafe there as well. Would highly recommend to anyone who likes art.

What a treasure in Pittsburg. Spent a full day exploring and enjoying the art museum and the natural history museum--all under one "roof". brilliantly laid out and curated. Bravo!

It is one of Pittsburgh's most internationally recognized art institutions, American and European paintings over the past two centuries, sculpture, decorative art, and architecture.
it might be not an art mecca. But for a small city, the Carnegie Museum of ART (“CMOA”) packs a surprising art punch.
Since its inception in 1895, Carnegie wanted the museum to reflect “tomorrow’s old masters,” not just ancient works. As a result, CMOA is considered the first museum of modern art in the United States.
The museum also has several rotating exhibits that showcase specific artists, media, and themes. The museum is named for its founder Andrew Carnegie, who embarked on his vision for an art center in the late 1800s
Hall of Architecture: You can see copies of Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace from the Louvre. You can admire Lorenzo Ghiberti’s bronze doors, which were created for the Florence Baptistery. Michelangelo dubbed them the “Gates of Paradise”.
They were created by master craftsmen. If the citizens of Pittsburgh couldn’t get to Europe, they could at least see what they were missing.

Entry fee: Adults $19.95, children 3-18 $11.95, under 2 free.

Whenever traveling to Pittsburgh, we always make time to visit the Carnegie Museum of Art. We were so fortunate and pleased this time we happened to be in town for the The 58th Carnegie International exhibit...truly moving!

I came for the Carnegie International which is a show organised by the museum every couple of years (now the 58th edition). I loved the show!!!
While the museum as such is architecturally interesting as such with a great Richard Serra sculpture in front of the entrance the collection in the museum has highlights, especially of impressionist art and 20th century art.

Lovely art museum, paired with the Natural History museum. Staff were very friendly and we had delicious food at the first level cafe and bakery.

One word. Fantastic. On par with any great Museum of Art. Great exposition of Impressionists. We did not have enough time to see everything.

It’s a modernist building shaped like an enormous turtle, joined at the hip to a more classical edifice housing the Carnegie Natural History Museum and houses a mighty fine collection of art. It is accessed up a ramp into a lobby with a cafe at one end and a sculpture hall at the other. A flight of steps rises to some corridors housing a temporary exhibition of black and white photographs of miners and labourers in the 1950s before the galleries proper divided into post 1945 and everything else. There are a few Renaissance pieces as well as a couple of works by a lesser known 19th century English artist for an altarpiece in a church in Torquay before one reaches masterpieces of French Impressionism by the likes of Renoir, Sisley, Manet and a couple of Van Goghs. A miniature Constable albeit a little jewel. A single Matisse, some German expressionists. Post-1945 Rothko, de Kooning and Ellsworth Kelly were particularly memorable. A sculpture room included a striking bust of Rossini.

I really enjoyed my visit, wandering the large rooms looking at a wide variety of art. I am always happy to see a Van Gogh, but I also enjoyed the sculpture and the more modern pieces. The building is also very appealing. There was a special exhibit on African American journalism in the past, with wonderful photography of the Pittsburgh area in the 40s and earlier.
The people I visited with were not interested in the Natural History museum next door, but if I were solo, I wouldve done the combined ticket and visited both. That would be a great day.

If you have a great art museum in your city you may want to spend time if limited seeing other things in Pittsburgh unless you are an art fan. The Carnegie Museum of Art was the first in America to focus on contemporary art.

I did a quick map layout for you and the distance between the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is 1.8 miles, 8 minutes of you are driving. It also looks to be pretty straight forward without a lot of turns between the two places. I hope this helps!
