Avoid this area when of town, what was once a nice area we use to visit when it town visiting family has become a very dangerous place to go with crime & violence at all time high and shootings every weekend.

This is a great area for nightlife - bars, restaurants and clubs. That includes all the things “nightlife” can bring. Fun times and also drunks. Lots of cool and different places here - a little something for everyone!

The crowd is young and the alcohol flows in abundance on the south side - which often leads to trouble - if you want to party - this is the place - if you want to relax this is not for you!

Parking is not east to find in the evening. Seem a little like New Orleans, you quickly get into some shady looking areas. So many places to eat......shop .Great people watching.

What a transformation was made in this area. It is such a fun and pretty place to visit. I definitely recommend it.

I love the South Side, but depending on the time of day, the weather, and who's walking the sidewalks with you, it has the potential to be a rough place. Safety is priority; just be smart. Obviously, it's best known for it's seemingly endless supply of bars and tattoo shops, but there are also some decent restaurants and really neat hole-in-the-wall shops worth checking out. Unless you're staying at one of the hotels, South Side parking can be tricky. Most of the bars/shops are limited to just meters on the street or a close-by garage.

If you live in Pittsburgh, you probably know the stereotype of this part of town. It is funky and a bit shabby, with the feel of the Mission District in San Francisco (but working-class Pittsburgh style). There are many bars, restaurants, and stores like you will certainly not find in a mall. However, it is rowdy and young during nightlife time. One might say it depends on how old you are - or feel - and what time of the day you go. Here's what I would do if I were visiting Pittsburgh and was curious about this unique neighborhood and main street. Crossing over the Birmingham Bridge is the best way to get there. After you bear right from the bridge, start to look for parking - which is not usually hard to find. Walk on East Carson St. and enjoy several blocks of the unusual architecture, store fronts, art galleries, etc. There is a cool candy shop along this way. E. Carson is a good walk up and down on both sides from the bridge. On the way back to your car, on the other side of E. Carson St, there is a great gyro place. There is also a steak place that has the best steak salad I ever had. Probably the best place to eat there, but a tad pricey, is Nakama - for sushi and such. Not sure if some Steelers still hang out there, but I have sighted a few over the years. (The bar at Nakama is excellent.) Enjoy!

If your over 25 this is not an area for you. Very young crowd. Drinks were a little expensive at some places and waits for drinks were long.

How far to downtown

Someone already stated it depends on where you are on the Southside. If you are at Station Square you only need to walk across a bridge and you will be downtown. Station Square is at Smithfield Street. However if you continued East along Carson Street from Smithfield you can go all the way to 28th or 29th street or even another mile or so down the road to Becks Run Road and Paige's Ice Cream Stand. So the further West you are on the Southside, the closer you are to downtown. Realistically you are only a few minutes away with a car.

The Casino is no where near, you would have to drive across the Fort Duquesne Bridge to get to the Rivers Casino or you can go theough downtown Pittsburgh and head over the Roberto Clemente Bridge or actually there are 3-4 other bridges that will get you there, I wanted to say that the new thing now is to take the underwater subway to the Casino from Downtown Pittsburgh by The Point.
