A great place to go especially on a cold or rainy day

Well we renewed our membership for the umpteenth time. The only other place as colorful in Pittsburgh is Phipps Conservatory. Photos don't do it justice.

It is clear that the aviary now is more interested in income stream than providing an experience for the visitor.

The aviary recently spent millions adding a new event center on to the building. It is clear they should be in the event center business instead of running an aviary. The grand entrance off of the parking lot is not open to visitors. After paying your $5 to park you must walk all around the building, over a goose poop covered sidewalk, then along a mud puddle covered gravel path. Hopefully you are not in a wheelchair, or have a stroller,or have mobility issues. Then you have to walk out to the street along the sidewalk. ( here is an idea, park on the public street, less expensive and closer to the entrance). Once inside, they will upsell you. Want to see a bird show? $5 per person. Go onto the parrot room? $3 per person. Up close with a penguin or owl? $99.
I could understand the event space spending and the up charges if they kept the entrance price low, but it is comparable to the Carnegie Science center, or the zoo, or the Carnegie museum, and there is much less to see at the other places. I less you are intensely interested in birds, this is not worth the money.

Take our bird-loving niece and nephew here every year for a day of fun and learning. And they love having a snack at the atrium and exploring the little gift area.

We found out about it by accident. It's not huge but a great experience -- most of the birds flying free around your head. Loved the penguin exhibit, don't miss the shows, and we paid extra for an animal encounter (feeding/petting a sloth) -- well worth it! Money goes to conservation efforts. They also have a nice cafe and gift shop.

Pet a penguin, have fun, learn something

We are regulars here and come 2-3 times a year. The docents are friendly and knowledgeable and the free flight rooms are amazing. The Grasslands and Tropical Rainforest are particularly interesting with many birds who are as interested in you as you are in them. I haven't seen the newly reopened Wetlands yet but the staff was pretty excited. Do take in the various talks and encounters--well worth the time. Pro Tip: if you buy a regular admission, adding the more personal encounters (owl, hawk, penguin, etc.) are only $14 and absolutely worth it. The price shown on the website includes admission so don't double-pay. The Aviary is extremely responsive to emails and can help if you're confused.

Had a very nice afternoon touring the aviary. Lots of interesting birds, and staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. Would definitely go back!

Definitely book your admission ticket with an animal encounter! Part of our family booked a penguin interaction, where we got very close to an African penguin during their feeding time and got to touch its back and learn a lot! The other part of our family booked a sloth interaction, where we got to touch a sloth and feed it. We learned a lot! The rest of the museum is small, but works for folks like us who are happy to be still and observe animals and birds. It was very cool!

You should visit the aviary if you like birds

Liked the national aviary. It wasn't too crowded on a Saturday. There were lots of different birds to see. Some of the experiences were a la carte meaning you pay extra to participate but overall we liked the place and entry was easy and reasonable.

Delightful activity

We had a delightful time at the aviary! Wonderful variety of birds to see as they walked right past us. The staff were informative and it was fun to see them receive their feeding.

Up close and personal with birds of various feathers

While birds of a feather still flock together at the National Aviary, the opportunity to experience the numerous species in the various exhibit spaces was thoroughly enjoyable. Additionally, the opportunity to be only a few yards from a member of the largest species of owl on the planet was quite unexpected and a highlight of the visit. The most disappointing aspect of the visit was that the Wetlands exhibit is closed for renovations.
