We ended our day in the area with a hike of Angel's Palace Trail. While the trail is described as easy to moderate, we would put it more toward the moderate end of the spectrum given a few inclines. There are great panoramas on this hike. Once up on the hill however, the trail markers become disjointed and confusing. Neither us, nor several other hikers up on the hill, were quite able to figure out how this was a loop, so ultimately, we retraced our steps to the beginning of the trail.

One of the trails in Kodachrome Basin State Park which takes you into the multi coloured countryside. Altough not a flat trail this is an easy walk but could be better signed. Great scenery and a good place to take yourself away from the crowds. The facilities in the State Park are very good.

Angel’s Palace Trail is a 1.5 mile round trip hike located in the picturesque Kodachrome Basin State Park, not far from Bryce Canyon National Park. The trailhead is located about one mile north of the park Visitor Center. A paved parking lot and flush toilets are across the road from the trailhead.

From the trailhead the wide, sandy path remains mostly level for the first quarter mile or so as it enters a small canyon, the shadiest section of the trail. When you reach the end of the ravine, the trail begins to narrow and steadily ascend. NOTE that this part of the trail is steep and rocky, so proper footwear is absolutely necessary. We observed a young women trying to hike this section in flip-flops and having a miserable time. Also, from this point the trail is fully exposed, so wearing a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses would be a good idea.

Be sure to keep your eye open for trail markers as the trail can be a little hard to follow in places. If you follow the main trail as marked, in about a half mile you’ll reach the first of several overlooks. A sign will direct you to a short spur trail that climbs to the end of a narrow promontory. NOTE that if you have a fear of heights or have occasional bouts with vertigo, you should avoid these overlooks for your own safety. Those who venture to the edge of the overlooks will be rewarded spectacular views of the park, the brilliantly colored rock formations and even (on a clear day) the pink/orange spires of Bryce Canyon.

The trail is relatively short, but there is a fairly significant elevation gain. For the extremely fit, the trail is pretty easy; for the casual hiker it’s probably more of a moderate challenge. Either, it is definitely recommended for the memorable views that are a worthy payoff for your effort.
