The Panorama trail is 3 miles round-trip but we were cut short of seeing the Bear Geyser and Cool Cave because of a sudden summer afternoon monsoon thunderstorm while we were hiking on the trail. You definitely need to allow several hours for completing this entire trail.

There are some up and down hill climbs but most of all, it is a sandy trail. Flashfloods during the summer afternoons are quite a common thing and they can appear out of nowhere at any given time!! The rain gets on the red iron oxide trail and the mud will turn your socks and shoes into a reddish color!! The water streams down the road into puddles and it can be challenging to hike through the area.

Cool views od different spires such as Fred Flinstone- he can't be noticed or seen until you actually walk and turn around to see in a side profile. Can be tricky as it is not noticeable when walking right in front of Fred!

Ballerina spire and Hat Shop are interesting spires to look at. The trail to Secret Passage provided a view to walk through a rather wider slot canyon like road.

Bring plenty of water, snacks , and your camera along for these unique spires and pipes! They are actually very simple looking in comparison to the the hoodoos seen in Bryce Canyon National Park but still it is worth a stop here as they are different!

Definitely not as busy as Zion or Bryce Canyon National Park. You will most likely have the trails to yourselves and not see more than 10-20 hikers along them. Nice if you do not enjoy seeing crowds!

The Panorama Trail is an approximately four-mile loop trail located in the beautiful Kodachrome Basin State Park, a few miles southeast of Bryce Canyon National Park. The trailhead is located a little over a half-mile north of the park Visitor Center. A paved parking lot and a picnic area are across the road from the trailhead.

Depending on your experience and level of fitness, this trail can be considered either easy or moderate. It is almost fully exposed, so you should definitely bring water and wear sunscreen. A hat, sunglasses and good shoes are also strongly recommended.

From the marked trailhead you will head west, circling around a cliff and dipping a time or two into dry washes. It won’t be long before you turn north and begin a counter-clockwise trek around an expansive basin that’s filled with interesting sights. Among the landmarks you will encounter are sand pipes and rock formations with names like “Ballerina Spire” and the “Hat Shop.”

After about 1.5-2.0 miles, you’ll encounter a sign pointing the way to the “Secret Passage,” which is a short spur loop that is worth checking out. The highlights of the Secret Passage include several teepee-like rock formations as well as a natural amphitheater in the side of a cliff.

The next directional option you’ll encounter is for the “Cool Cave,” a loop trail that will add about two miles to your hike. Our son, wanting the additional exercise, took the detour and said afterward that the Cool Cave was the highlight of the entire hike, that the cave area was indeed refreshingly cooler than any other point along the trail.

The final major option along the main trail is the up-and-back spur trail to Panorama Point. If you choose to follow the spur trail, it will be the most demanding part of the hike as you will gain a good deal of elevation fairly quickly. You are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Kodachrome Basin when you reach the Point.

All-in-all, I would recommend this trail as it provides you with an up-close look at the unique geology of the Kodachrome Basin.
