We LOVED Church Street Marketplace! Beautiful buildings with wonderful small business’s, tons of places to eat & enjoyed the Christmas decor. They have a large parking garage located right amongst the marketplace with super cheap parking! We spent an entire day here and really enjoyed it! Lots of great shopping to be done here. Everything is easily walkable and all within a couple blocks. A fun spot to spend the day checking out some great shopping (more small business type shops VS chain/corporate types), tons of coffee shops (recommend Cosmic Grind!), Ben & Jerry’s, places to eat & see Burlington!

We stopped at Church Street Marketplace for a little shopping. This marketplace was four or five blocks long. There were several stores and restaurants. The street was clean. There were lots of tourists just like us. It could use a few more places to sit down and people watch.

A lot of small older cities in the U.S. seem to have pedestrian market places. Burlington is no exception. Their marketplace is just as nice as any other I've seen. The usual collection of local and national shops along a pedestrian walkway four blocks long. At the end by Main Street is a park.

Our bus trip of Vermont sopped here around the noon hour. I think the heyday of this pedestrian mall is passed. Yes, the buildings are historic, but they retail offerings were slim and except for Saratoga Oil and Danforth Pewter none of the well-known Vermont brand stores. Even the restaurant offerings were paltry. Maybe summertime it would have been more lively. I won't return. A directory of the stores at the start of the pedestrian mall would have been helpful. On a plus note, lights were being hung for the holidays.

This is not a safe place to visit. Panhandlers on every corner and in the parking garages. Open drug use.

In the heart of downtown Burlington, Church Street is a pleasant pedestrian street with shops and some restaurants (and a few nut jobs). It was nice to stroll. If you’re visiting the city, this is worth a walk.

We visited early (9:00 am) on a Saturday morning in search of breakfast. Looked basically deserted except for homeless people asking for money. Disappointed. Seems to be the way of things in downtown areas these days.

Disappointing. Lots of sketchy people and one guy ranting and raving about whatever. Shops are nothing special either. Keep walking to lake and enjoy the views.

the concept was nice but it was a little too run down feeling, and I dont see a way to fix it up - I think it might be a lost cause.

No,music, no street performers, and the mall was not a bustling place. To be fair we arrived late in the day. The pedestrian mall looked a tired to us, A few upgrades and attention to contemporary decor would help

Visiting weekday during mid oct. are all of these shops open weekdays or should we do it on the weekend?

Hi there. I am a regular in Burlington as I have siblings living there. Typically all the shops and restaurants are open all the time, every day, weekday or weekend.
Given the current COVID situation, I would wait until much closer to the date you want to visit and then "Google" the Church Street mall and call a few places to see what's open and what's (maybe) not.
Good luck. It is a wonderful place to walk, window shop, dine and drink, especially in the fall. Peter in Montreal

I will respond in English (S.V.P.). I am not an expert concerning winter activities (les activites d'hiver) in Burlington, because I visited in October, but "hockey a glace" and ice skating for sure are omnipresent along Lake Champlain. There are always the many brew pubs, bistrops, shops, and interesting emporiums at the Church Street Marketplace (such as, one of the first Ben & Jerry Ice Cream Parlors) which are normally open unless there is a severe winter storm.
Hi! My husband and I are trying to plan a trip this Christmas. We are traveling with a dog and we’re curious if any of the restaurants on Church Street still offer outdoor seating in the winter (maybe with little space heaters)?? 🥶

Sorry not to answer sooner, but I was traveling in New Zealand (enjoying summer) and missed the question. I doubt if the few restaurants on the Church Street Marketplace would offer outdoor seating with heaters in December. In coastal Southern California where I live, yes; in frigid Vermont, no.
There might be greenhouse dining areas at some restaurants in Burlington but I don’t recall any along Church Street.
My husband and I will be visiting for one night Jan 31st- feb 1st. Any events going on or a must do or see?
Thanks
Laura

It's probably cold in that period of that year, so be ready to wear heavy clothes.
In town, there are nice restaurants and cozy bars where you can warm up.
Is it dog friendly?

My wife and I will be in the Burlington area 12/13 - 15. Since we'll only be there a short while, thoughts, suggestions on "Must see" spots greatly appreciated. we don't mind a little drive to get the best experience. Thanks in advance.

You probably are arriving on the 13th and leaving on the 15th. I suggest you plan to spend time downtown. The Christmas lights will be up and the street looks magical. Maybe a cocktail at one place, dinner at another, then dessert someplace else. (I endorse Tratorria Delia for dinner; my absolute favorite although not wheelchair accessible) Have one exquisite chocolate at Champlain Chocolates. I count on the website of our local indie paper to tell me what's happening. The paper is called Seven Days. The website is of the same name.
It has all the news about events. A little too early to have much listed for your stay dates. I looked at the Flynn theater website for your stay dates and didn't find anything; that's very unusual. The Flynn is an art deco theater that has been updated and it's worth a look but no events scheduled as of now. Drive down to Shelburne to visit the Teddy Bear Factory and learn how the very successful business came to be. You will enjoy it even if you don't have children. There is a free shuttle bus that will bring you from the University of Vermont down to the waterfront. Since Burlington is built on a hill this little bus will climb the hill for you. Do go to the waterfront; it's magnificent in the winter as well as summer. The Courtyard by Marriott has a nice outdoor patio where they have a roaring fire in winter; great to sit and stare at the flames. If you go to the very top level of the many parking garages you get a wonderful view of the city as well as the lake and across to New York. Great spot; and free! Hope this helps.

Any suggestions on what to do in Burlington on a Monday in September? Sounds like downtown might be pretty dead. Am thinking about renting a bike or walking along the lake, but what if the weather is not so good? Ideas?

Church Street Marketplace, a four block pedestrian street in the heart of the downtown, is lined with shops and restaurants of all descriptions and interest. Not sure when they close for the day, but most should be open late in early September. There is an extensive bikeway in Burlington and the walk along the lake is really nice. More to do in Burlington than I had initially expected.

We have a dog that we bring downtown during the outdoor eating season, however I am not aware of any eateries where a dog (excepting service dogs, of course) are allowed into the establishment. Sorry

Church Street Marketplace runs N-S for several blocks beginning at Main Street and ending at Cherry (I think). The two streets that run parallel on either side are Winooski (east) and St. Paul (west). If you're walking on Main st and can see the Flynn Space (big theater marquee), you're practically there. It starts on the north side of Main.
