Pretty small and sloppy for the price it has.
Perhaps the best are the views it provides from the top of its towers. The rooms are not furnished and you can find some weapon in them but little else. There is a cistern that can be lowered but being very careful because the entrance is very narrow and the ground slippery.

Nice getaway, you should not have missed while in La Roche!
Small climb up, but definitely doable and also worth it. You get a route / map, which contains background information, but there are certainly also signs with information about what you see. Staff very committed and work hard. Recommended is the archery. Unfortunately there were no falcons/owls at the time we were there. Walked around for about an hour and could see everything clearly.
Another must is the spectacle about “the legend of Berthe”, every evening around 10 pm! You can see this best from the terrace of Le Quai Son. We have enjoyed it

+ During our visit there was a Medieval Festival, this made the castle worthwhile
+ In between short informative pieces of text in various languages
- If the festival would not have been there, there is not so much to experience. It's more of a ruin than a castle.
- Price / quality is therefore somewhat out of proportion
! Keep in mind that it is a climb to the castle and in the castle itself it is not very easy to pass.

If you're driving in, use the parking near Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes to guide you in. We pinned the castle on our map and drove all around the top of the hill for no apparent reason.
The ruined castle is an easy and gradual climb to the top where, on a clear day like on our visit, your gifted with breath taking views of the village below. Walk in and through the various rooms and chambers to emerge at the very top of the keep. The Ruins also offer a birds of prey show and a smaller courtyard with an inert trebuchet.
When you're done, skip on down to the village and enjoy some pizza, bier and gelato!

After the steep climb we arrived at the ticket office, where we were not too friendly helped with tickets for eur 9.50. Once at the top of the castle, there was no information to be found about the rooms or the building. We saw it quickly and thought the price was too high for what was offered.

I love castles and ruins but I find this really scandalous. You pay, receive the receipt in your hands and you just have to look. There is really nothing to see besides the castle walls. I think the bird of prey shows are the only thing that attracts people, although it is very sad for the animals to be caged up all day.
The view was beautiful, but you don't necessarily have to go for the castle.

Castle ruins providing great views of the town and river valley. Well worth the price of admission as you can easily spend a couple of hours exploring- more if there is a falconry show taking place. Definitely not stroller friendly so wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to walk.

The castle ruins are in the center of the town of La Roche. Easy accessible but as it is at the top of a hill, a steep walk towards the entrance.
Assure yourself that the archery is active, and the bar is open, otherwise the entrance and visit is expensive for what it is.
As mentioned in other reviews, no explanation is given, just a few signs are present and a small brochure is handed. This is such an opportunity to improve on giving the history on the castle, anecdotes, etc. but regretfully this lacks.
For kids with a vivid imagination, they can play here the knight in shining armor, if parents go along... ;o)

Il possente castello medievale di La Roche-en-Ardenne, costruito tra il XI e il XII secolo, non è stato oggetto di restauri ricostruttivi: quindi i resti giunti fino a noi hanno conservato il loro aspetto originario, cosa che conferisce loro un fascino unico.
Il castello può essere raggiunto solo a piedi, salendo lungo una stradina acciottolata, cosa che lo rende inaccessibile alle persone con problemi di mobilità. Gli orari di apertura cambiano a seconda della stagione e per questo rimandiamo al sito del monumento. Il biglietto costa 6,50 € e la visita, di una durata media di 45 minuti, si effettua liberamente.
Il castello può essere raggiunto solo a piedi, salendo lungo una stradina acciottolata, cosa che lo rende inaccessibile alle persone con problemi di mobilità. This is a very interesting castle. I have read up the history now on Wikipedia and am really sad that NOTHING was explained in the castle. There are signs that say “main court” or “pillar tower”. That is it. All the explanations you get.
When was it built?
By whom?
Who owned it?
What did Vauban do?
Why was it abandoned?
Why did the powder explode?
So many questions and no answers.
The falcon show was ok. The cages are very small. The falconer explained 100 times more about birds than all the signs say about the castle.
The entrance fee is steep for the meager offer.
Suggestion:
- Signs with text
- brochure
- audio guide
- actual guides that do tours (human guide)
All of these would be great.
I read here on trip adviser that someone suggested this in 2019. And a nice responsible said they were working on it. Keep this work going. And finish it soon. This is a disgrace for 2022!
